1954ref. 9407Lexington KY: Gravesend Press 1954. Vellum Binding. Near Fine binding. 18mo. 10 48 4 pp. illus. Limited edition number 9 of 200 copies. As issued in vellum-backed patterned-paper over boards. Lacking the slipcase. A handsome copy with only light toning to the perimeters of the boards; contents clean. This copy with 4-page prospectus. This work was the first book issued by the Gravesend Press that was actually printed using the Graves' press in their stable by Graves and Jacob Hammer. Kredel's charming engraved pressmark of a sleeping pressman graces the final page. Graves writes about this in his Bibliographical Confession the donkey in the window was their family pet Patience. Graves operated the press as a sideline from about 1949 through to the end of his life in 1960 issuing scarcely more than half a dozen books. While less known that some of his contemporaries he took his place amidst a vibrant mid-century printing and illustrating scene—friends with Victor Hammer Carolyn Reading Fritz Kredel John DePol John Fass and others. H. Richard Archer in a history of the Graves and his press published in The Kentucky Review Spring 1987 summarizes Graves's work thus: "All of the books whether pamphlets or bound books reflect the taste and high standards of a true amateur craftsman and as such they certainly qualify as choice examples from one of this generation's most distinguished private presses." Press historian Roderick Cave notes that this was "probably the most successful Gravesend book" p. 263. Limited edition number 71 of 500 copies signed by Neal and Eichenberg at the colophon. As issued sewn into printed wrappers with full page wood engraving by Eichenberg serving as a frontispiece. Another similarly printed and sewn booklet with title page and colophon serves as a folder for a loose wood engraving of the frontispiece—this signed and numbered by Eichenberg on the bottom margin; all houses in publisher's slipcase with printed paper labels. Only light rubbing to the slipcase but the contents are nearly fine. A striking engraving portions of which have been employed to decorate the covers of each booklet as well as each colophon. This is an interesting allegory of the costs of excess. Thistle Hill Press unknown

"First published in 1603 in Latin this very early picaresque novel immediately became a European best-seller. Written by a Scotsman who was born and bred in France it was reprinted in Latin twenty times with the first seventy years and was also translated into French Dutch and German. It was never translated into English although the original was widely read in England at the time. Our translation was thus the first to introduce Euphormio's bizarre and unpredictable adventures to the ordinary reader" Cock-A-Hoop 196. Golden Cockerel Press unknown

1841ref. V74754Wien Vienna: Mayer & Compagnie 3rd revised edition. 1841. Hardcover. Good. Frontisplate 59 other steel-engraved plates lacking pl.50 Sisyphus originally engraved on copper in 1815 by Franz St ber 1795-1858. Large octavo 24cm x 15.5cm newer linen-spined boards with old paper relaid on covers and spine has title but lacks original paper at spine head and foot. Unpaginated but each numbered plate has tissue guard and facing leaf of text in German to explain each myth. Lacks plate 50 maybe cut out by censor. Some foxing and light marginal damp marks at gutter not touching engraved part of plates. The steel-engraved images of gods nymphs and heroes are quite small 9.5cm x 6.5cm printed on strong paper at centre of each plate but of very fine quality and detail. They are closely based on similarly numbered copperplate engravings by Franz Xaver St ber first published Vienna 1815 in similar large octavo format but with completely different anonymous German text. The detail of these later steel engravings only differs from St ber's original 1815 copperplates by covering up some female breasts better to comply with 1840s more prudish moral code. They still retain the strongly erotic impression given by many of the originals thus helping to maintain their popularity over more than 25 years. Mayer & Compagnie 3rd revised edition. hardcover

Attractive late 19th or early 20th century retrospective polished brown calf by L. Guétant stamp-signed in gilt on tail of spine double gilt-ruled border floral cornerpieces raised bands spine panels with scrolling floral borders and central flower ornament gilt titling. With title vignette and 62 ENGRAVED FOLDING PLATES ALL WITH BEAUTIFUL HAND COLORING AND HIGHLIGHTED WITH GOLD depicting Bible scenes from the Old and New Testament 61 of which are by Jan Luyken. A Large Paper Copy. For earlier editions: Graesse IV p. 308; Brunet III 1245-46; Klaversma & Hannema 159-164. Light rubbing to joints and edges boards just a little marked trivial foxing and faint spots here and there but A REMARKABLY FINE COPY the binding lustrous and showing little wear the paper extremely bright and fresh the margins immense and the paint and gold unusually vibrant. The marvelous illustrations of Dutch engraver and poet Jan Luyken comprise this collection of "remarkable stories" from the Bible each depicted with panoramic grandeur and enhanced with a wide range of finely applied colors and gold. Luyken 1649-1712 had written and illustrated erotic poetry as a young man but later became a devout Pietist after reading the works of German mystic Jakob Böhme. He became a member of the Baptist Church in 1673 and thereafter devoted his talents to producing religious works. The vast scenes here are notable in their scale detail and animation. There are a number of battle scenes from the Old Testament as well as dramatic depictions of the plagues and a fascinating episode from the histories of Josephus depicting Herod's soldiers being lowered down the side of a cliff in large boxes suspended from chains in order to attack the thieves hiding in caverns on the cliffside. There is a majestic portrayal of the Queen of Sheba arriving at the court of Solomon a peaceful scene of Adam naming the beasts in the Garden of Eden and a festive celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles. New Testament scenes include a terrifying final judgment a blinding conversion of St. Paul and scenes from that Apostle's travels. The engravings have one common trait: they are heavily populated whether by men or beasts and one of Luyken's special gifts is to render every person in the crowd as an individual with his own concerns and reactions to the events at hand. The engravings while already greatly pleasing in black and white are even more stirring and memorable when seen in the full color and gold used here. Expansive tableaus are given greater definition and clarity and events such as Noah’s flood and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah are rendered even more successful in expressing the awesome powers of the Almighty. The illustrations are quite definitely Protestant in point of view: there are no depictions of the Virgin Mary not even a Nativity scene. Except for engravings of the Annunciation to the Shepherds and the Massacre of the Holy Innocents the illustrations focus on Jesus as an adult and on the work of his Apostles spreading the gospel. There were earlier editions containing Luyken's 62 large plates which originally appeared without text as here in 1708 and they appeared again with a text in Dutch in 1729 and in French in 1732. Copies of these editions appear with some regularity in the marketplace but are usually not colored and are often found incomplete or with other major condition issues. We can trace no record in RBH or OCLC of a copy of our 1790 edition and we can find nothing that compares with the quality of coloring and grand height attained by the monumental margins seen here. H. Keyzer, H. Gartman en W. Vermandel unknown
