1766rif. 26547Naples 1766-1776. A single aquatint plate drawn and engraved after the original pieces in the Hamilton collection. The colour aquatint shows three maidens one of which is brandishing a sword. The middle female holds a paten in her left hand. The image may be part of a bacchanal scene. The background is black the image coloured with shades of tan brown terra-cotta and gold. Printed on a single folio sheet measuring approximately 20" x 15" the image approximately 9.5" X 7.5". Now presented in cream mounting boards 22" x18" behind clear mylar. A very fine plate in an excellent state of preservation. A BEAUTIFUL AND IMPRESSIVE PLATE FROM A MASTERPIECE OF CLASSIC ART RENDERINGS AND PUBLICATION. Hamilton served as British envoy to the court of Naples where he began collecting Greek vases and other antiquities immediately upon arriving at his post. In 1766–67 he published a volume of engravings of his collection entitled A Collection of Etruscan Greek and Roman antiquities from the cabinet of the Honble. Wm. Hamilton. A further three volumes were produced in 1769–76. Josiah Wedgwood the potter and porcelain maker drew great inspiration from the reproductions presented in Hamilton's volumes. While widely recognized for their beauty the reproductions from Hamilton's vases have become evidence of the irreconcilable problem of neoclassicism in the Romantic period. Significant changes in the way the vases were engraved over a span of thirty or forty years demonstrate how an immutable collection of objects is subject to radical shifts in representation in response to the social and artistic styles of the time. hardcover

Jahrhundert durch die Bourbonen renoviert wurde und 1878 vom Haus Savoyen in Gemeindebesitz überging. Engraving in original hand-colour. 16 x 13 cm (sheet dimensions: 30 x 21 cm). Matted. A rare engraving showing the Indian priest Aaron, the first converted native preacher of Malabar, dressed in white cloth and presenting to the viewer two pages from the Acts of the Apostles in Tamil. The Tamil Bible translation was famously published in 1713 by the Saxon missionary Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg, who had been posted to the Danish colony of East India (Malabar) in the early 18th century. A nearly half-page letterpress text below the engraving elaborates on the conversion and life of Aaron, who was born ca. 1699, baptised in 1718, and ordained in 1733. - The engraver and botanist J. S. Müller (1715 - ca. 1792), known as John Miller in Britain, was born in Nuremberg, where he trained under Johann Christoph Weigel. He came to England in 1744 with his brother Tobias - an engraver of architecture - and remained there the rest of his life, producing several important botanical works and apparently also forging several oil paintings for London's appreciative art market. - Traces of folds; insignificant duststains to margins.
