rif. 04966Paris: Maison Martinet 1848. Revolution Ridicule and the Absurdities of Everyday Life Twenty Superb Hand-Colored French Caricatures of the 1840s In the Original Publisher's Gilt-Decorated Boards FRENCH CARICATURES. VERNIER Charles; BOURDET; VANTEUIL C.G. and others illustrators. Caricatures par Divers Artistes. Cover title. Paris: Maison Martinet Hautecoeur Frères Éditeurs 15 Rue du Coq St. Honoré ca. 1848. A remarkable collection of twenty finely hand-colored lithographic caricatures by various French artists including a particularly interesting series of political satires relating to the French Revolution of 1848. Oblong folio 10 1/4 x 13 5/8 inches; 260 x 345 mm. Twenty hand-colored lithographic plates several from separately numbered satirical series including Les Petites Misères de la Vie and Les Bigarrures de l'Esprit Humain. Original publisher's pale blue boards front cover elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt within an ornamental border the gilt title Caricatures par Divers Artistes surrounded by decorative arabesques. Some rubbing and surface wear to boards and extremities gilt decoration somewhat faded. Occasional light foxing and marginal discoloration to plates the third plate with a closed 3 1/2 inch tear on lower blank margin not affecting image the hand-coloring generally bright and attractive. A very good copy of this exceptionally appealing collection preserved in its original publisher's binding. A fascinating panorama of French political and social life during one of the most turbulent periods of the nineteenth century. These twenty wonderfully expressive caricatures capture the spirit of Paris in the 1840s when political revolution military spectacle social ambition and the absurdities of everyday existence provided seemingly inexhaustible material for the satirical artist. The collection brings together works by several accomplished French caricaturists including Charles Vernier Bourdet and C.G. Vanteuil with lithographic contributions from Villain Jules Rigo and Lemercier. The subjects range from the revolutionary barricades of 1848 and the sudden transformation of military fortunes to bourgeois pretensions domestic catastrophes fashionable gossip scientific absurdities and the eternal follies of human nature. Particularly noteworthy are the political caricatures associated with the Revolution of February 1848 which brought an end to the July Monarchy of Louis-Philippe and established the French Second Republic. These prints vividly illustrate the atmosphere of uncertainty excitement and disillusionment accompanying the revolutionary upheavals. Soldiers become figures of ridicule social distinctions are overturned and the promises of liberty and equality are subjected to the merciless scrutiny of the caricaturist. In Nous sommes tous égaux tous Grenadiers! four soldiers proclaim their newfound equality while Changement à vue presents a striking contrast between military magnificence and a decidedly less glorious reality. Elsewhere revolutionary youths preparing a barricade discover that an unfortunate passerby's enormous nose might provide the perfect finishing touch. One particularly amusing caricature depicts an enormously corpulent grenadier almost entirely concealed beneath his gigantic bearskin cap accompanied by a playful parody of a popular military song concerning the sappers and their headgear. Another shows a soldier discovering the unexpected attractions of a wine cellar while a fantastical balloon ascent carries its passengers into the presence of the Almighty himself. The collection also contains four plates from Charles Vernier's Les Petites Misères de la Vie The Little Miseries of Life a delightful series exposing the everyday frustrations and absurdities of bourgeois existence. These include a spectacular tumble down a staircase the dubious pleasures of country living beside a railway the sensational inventions reported in contemporary newspapers and the inexplicable decisions of government officials. Five further plates belong to Bourdet's Les Bigarrures de l'Esprit Humain The Variegations of the Human Mind a richly observed series devoted to human eccentricity vanity hypocrisy and self-deception. Among the most entertaining is a scholar surrounded by books papers and scientific instruments who proudly announces that he has conceived a brilliant idea but refuses to put it into practice for fear that someone might steal it. Another depicts a drunken gentleman outside a wine merchant's establishment suddenly convinced of the correctness of Galileo's assertion that the earth revolves. The lithographs are distinguished by their lively compositions exaggerated physiognomies expressive gestures and attractive contemporary hand-coloring. Their humor ranges from broad political burlesque to subtle observations of human behavior providing an entertaining and revealing commentary upon French society during the final years of the July Monarchy and the establishment of the Second Republic. Maison Martinet was an important Parisian publisher and print-seller whose establishment issued a wide variety of popular lithographs caricatures and illustrated series. Such prints played a significant role in the visual culture of nineteenth-century France offering both entertainment and topical commentary to an increasingly sophisticated urban audience. The present collection is particularly desirable for its preservation in the original publisher's gilt-decorated boards. Although individual lithographs from these series are encountered separately the survival of a substantial contemporary gathering in its original decorative binding is especially appealing. A wonderfully entertaining collection of twenty hand-colored French caricatures combining political satire social observation and the irrepressible humor of mid-nineteenth-century Paris preserved in its original publisher's gilt-decorated boards. The Twenty Plates: 1. Les sapeurs avaient peur d'perdre leurs bonnets d'sapeur. The sappers were afraid of losing their sappers' caps.
