"In the 1840's Paul Kane travelled the far reaches of the North American West from the Great Lakes along the fur-trade routes to the coast sketching a visual record of the Indian cultures of that vast area. With the publication of this study of his life and career Paul Kane emerges as a major figure among North American artists of the nineteenth century. Hundreds of his sketches are here examined together for the first time. The 48 colour plates and 204 black-and-white illustrations reveal Paul Kane's frontier as a region of endless fascination. This work offers first an account based on many new sources of the artist's life and career before and after his western travels. Then follows the 1859 text in full of 'Wanderings of an Artist' which gives Kane's own narrative of his adventures. The catalogue raisonne contains over eight hundred entries and is arranged according to the geographical areas of the subjects. 1878réf. CLA212500311Marshall County was formed on January 13 1846 named after John Marshall Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. It is distinguished by its central location in Iowa rich rolling prairie landscape along the Iowa River. This hefty illustrated volume "The History of Marshall County Iowa" was written in 1878 a short thirty-two years later. Published by the Western Historical Company of Chicago it is "A Biographical Directory of Citizens War Record of it Volunteers in the late Rebellion General and Local Statistics Portraits of Early Settles and Prominent Men History of the Northwest History of Iowa Map of Marshall County Constitution of the United States Miscellaneous Matters etc." In 1999 this book was re-bound – the original dark green front board with beveled edges and embossed gold gilt decoration remains the rear board is new from the repair. The spine and corner tips were updated to new brown leather and a piece of the original back strip has been attached to the spine – gold gilt text is bright and readable but the old leather shows blemishes. New endpapers were added but the original brown endpaper remains intact with hand written inscription in pencil "The Property of Nathan Edsall to be left to H P Edsall". All interior pages are from the original publication but new tissue guards have been added to the full-page illustrations. While not completely original this is still an excellent primary source on the history of Marshall County and Iowa. "The complier of this history has endeavored to adhere to the rules which should govern all volumes of its class. Rumors have been given only as such; traditions from that appropriate place and assumptions are treated with the lightest stoke. Indisputable facts based upon definite dates and corroborated by testimony admissible in courts of justice alone stand recorded as facts….The most difficult task ever assigned us was the preparation of the chapter on the County Seat Conflict. When the present generation has passed into the silent grave m and the historian is no longer able to converse face to face with those who laid the cornerstone of the fine structure of Marshall County the value of this History will be conceded." Nathan Edsall 1832 – 1913 was born in New Jersey number seven in a family of fifteen children and married Susannah Pearson in Columbiana Ohio 1855. They had three children and by 1900 he was living in Marietta Township Marshall Iowa. He died in 1913 and is buried in Hixite Cemetery Marshall Township. His short biography can be found on page 684 marked with a blue X. The H P Edsall is his son Horace Pearson Edsall 1858 – 1945 born in Columbiana but lived in Marshall Iowa and is buried in Riverside Cemetery Marshalltown. It was Ken Edsall probably a great-grandson of Nathan who had the book re-bound in 1999. Condition: As stated this is a re-bound book with new and old pieces see description above and photos. The interior pages are all original – there is a small crack to the first illustration on heavy cardstock paper Text block is solid with all pages attached green and red decoration to all edges a stain to the front edge and with a purple stain at the bottom of pages 666 – 696 - the last page. Age tanning throughout. The interior pages are in excellent condition except where documented above but with no chips tears nor other previous owner markings. Western Historical Company hardcover
1925réf. 317h5392London: John Murray Publishers Limited 1925. Book. Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. pp. vi vii-xiv 360. Index. Thirty-three pages of black and white photographic plates. Author headed British Columbia's Game department for thirteen years. "Everything that is stated in this narrative with regard to the habits of our wild life is unless otherwise noted first-hand knowledge that has been acquired from personal observation during over thirty-five years of wandering in the country. There are in every man of British blood traces of primitive man. They create an overpowering desire to hunt and kill. It is likely that there was more than the ordinary share in me. This is a hard country for a man of education unless he has private means a profession or exceptional business ability. For a man of moderate means there is no country on the face of the earth where he can live a more healthy or enjoyable life; but if he expects to be frequently indulging in sport and also to amass the 'almighty dollar' he will have a sad disappointment. Fishing shooting and making money do not go well together. I can bear witness to this fact!" - Author's Foreword. Two names written upon front free endpaper. Trifle of writing inside back board.
