1419Best.-Nr. 64620Astoria OR: W.W. Clark Contractor & Construction Co. 1914-1916. Oblong 4to. 12 x 8.75 in. 88 leaves unnumbered. with 124 mounted silver gelatin photographs sized from 5 x 7 in. up to 8 x 10 in. nearly all w/ specific location details and dates w/in negatives at lower fore-edges w/ most leaves featuring 2 photos mounted to horizontal orientation on each recto. Original half-calf Pacific Stationery & Printing Co. post-binder two brass screwposts at gutter margin occasional rippling & thumbing to fore-edges of album leaves a few photos w/ slight over-exposure minor bumping at corners still a VG exemplar w/ ownership marking on ffep. This apparently unique souvenir photo album was prepared by the famed contractor carefully visually documenting the modernization and infrastructure of the Port of Astoria Oregon following its establishment just four years before in order to provide critical infrastructure to compete with Portland Seattle and Tacoma as fast expanding deepwater commercial ports. These images depict the driving of the first pilings in January 1914 arrival of the Dredge Washington in September 1914; the massive construction project and logs in order to build first Pier 1 as well as the firewall foundations for bulkhead sheet piling anchors new slips and construction equipment. By December 1914 the photos indicate the beginnings of the construction of Pier 2; steam cranes and equipment working on the bulkheads beginnings of the tile walls; and panoramic birds-eye views from the nearby hillsides of the progressing work.By February 1915 Clark’s crews had begun erecting the brick masonry buildings on Pier 2 using terra cotta brick tiles supplied by the National Fire Proofing Co. in order to cut down on fire risk from the tremendous amount of timber used in construction. Other photos show the laying of water supply and sewage pipes power three rail tracking for trolleys & rail lines on Pier two; installation of Fenestra Steel Monilor Sashes for windows in warehouses and a marvelous shot of the “Chief” pile driver for the J.A. McEachern Co. Contractors driving the last brace pile May 2 1915. Following the photo series detailing the fill sand behind the piers from dredging near Alameda Ave. there are photos showing the rock delivered through the dredge as well the Herringbone tracks added for rail access to the massive warehouses and finally views of the finished piers Port of Astoria with shipping docking alongside. The album closes with the significant project for introducing the massive grain elevator silos flourmill and other attributes to contribute to the project. At the outbreak of World War I Astoria had improved its commercial maritime shipping capacity improved infrastructure tremendously to take advantage of shipping but in 1919 following World War I shipbuilding companies and other export industries suffered along with the rest of the Pacific Northwest in a deep economic depression as well as plunge in demand for logs and overseas shipping demand. Although logging and salmon canning would continue to be vibrant the Port of Astoria never achieved close to the volume of any of the other Pacific Northwest deepwater ports including Portland Tacoma or Seattle. Clark 1863-1935 was perhaps one of the most significant large project contractors in the West Coast. He constructed the Bell Street Terminal in Seattle WA; oversaw the laying of tracks for the Great Northern RR and Milwaukee RR West of the Cascades; built the bridges on the Pacific Highway Cut-off between Everett WA & Marysville WA and also oversaw for the Moran Brothers shipyard in Seattle the construction of the Battleship Nebraska BB-14 a 14948-ton Virginia Class battleship. 1900Best.-Nr. 64553Ashland OR: F.L. Camps ca. 1900. One large silver gelatin birds-eye quadriptych panoramic photograph stretching 37.75 x 7.75 in. mounted on studio board 42 x 12 in. divided by the photographer into four panels w/ 2 outer panels sized 11.75 x 12 in. and 2 central panels sized 9.25 x 12 in. w/ photographer’s embossed imprint w/in the image at lower right corner on panel 4 originally intended to be clasped w/ 8 brass rings at each joint but later framed w/ remnants of black & brown backing paper on versos still a VG exemplar. This exceptional original and unknown large panoramic photo depicts Ashland Oregon at the end of the 19th-Century. Included are glimpses of historic structures and their advertising as the Hotel Oregon later renamed the Ashland Hotel which was a Queen Anne style building completed in 1889 featuring long porches and an elegant restaurant which was managed by noted Chinese-American chef “Chinese Jim” who cooked for Jack London William Jennings Bryan and Joaquin Miller as they stayed in the hotel and passed through town. Although the board sidewalk appears in the photo there are no evidence of the palm trees which were also planted later. Another structure glimpsed nearby is the fascinating beehive Chautauqua structure completed in just 10 days in 1893 and could seat 1000 attendees. Although the original structure no longer exists the Oregon Shakespeare Festival first organized in 1935 still takes place at the old Ashland Chautauqua site. The significant large “Furniture Store” is visible with awnings on Main Street along with nearby livery stables businesses homes as well as the train station and railroad rolling stock structures in the distance with one long train of railcars visible. Although undated and without caption the photograph style bears resemblance to the large panoramic photo by Lars Henrichsen shot and later marketed in several panels in 1903 and visual evidence indicates a Winter time shot as nearly all of the deciduous trees bear no foliage. Camps 1870-1935 was a German-American photographer who set up his earliest studio in Olympia WA in 1891 and was noted for ambrotype portraits but before 1900 moved and set up his studio in Ashland OR frequently traveling the countryside to shoot photos by buggy and horseback and later by 1913 in a licensed Ford Model T. After 1914 Camps had ceased operating a photo studio according to street directories and moved onto owning and managing automobile garages in Ashland Klamatha Falls or San Jose as well as Elkhorn CA and remarried. By the last years of his life during the Great Depression he continued to reside only in Klamath Falls OR. No similar examples located in Worldcat or other institutional holdings. F.L. Camps, unknown

This influential analysis of Kant's great work was written 'to elucidate those points, which, notwithstanding a translation, made about three years ago, of the work itself still remain unintelligible'. 'Possessed of ample means, [Francis Haywood (1796-1858)] devoted himself to study, and must at an early age have acquired a knowledge of German and of German philosophy and divinity unusual in England at the period, having been in 1828 the anonymous translator of Bretschneider's reply to Hugh James Rose's "State of Protestantism in Germany", dealing with the tendencies of German theology. He shortly afterwards undertook a much more difficult task in the translation of Kant's "Critick of Pure Reason", previously only accessible to English students unacquainted with German in a French or a Latin version. Haywood's long remained the standard English translation. Published [by Pickering] in 1838, it was reprinted with improvements in 1848, and was commended by the chief authority on Kant in Great Britain, Sir William Hamilton, with whom Haywood was corresponding respecting it' (DNB XXII, 832). Much of this description was taken years ago from a Bernard Quaritch Ltd. offering of a slightly better copy at a much higher price. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W151 Rt

Best.-Nr. 115314Very Good. Green buckram 193 × 253 mm stamped in blind 'Kodak Panorams' sic containing 36 gelatin silver panoramic photographs between 55 × 170 mm and 60 × 180 mm each loosely inserted two-to-a-page behind window mounts in specially-designed album leaves; 14 are captioned in pencil at the head of the print and 7 have a reference number between 67 and 83; many of the earlier photographs not featuring images of war are captioned on the verso in ink. Buckram slightly marked and rubbed; mild silvering-out to some prints; overall both the album and the photographs are in excellent condition. The heart of the album consists of 19 striking images of towns between Lens near Arras and Maurepas near Saint Quentin and the panoramic format of the photographs captures the horrifying extent of artillery damage. The towns identified in pencil on the images are Albert Lens Peronne Roye Villers Carbonnel Moreuil Souchez La Maisonnette Maurepas Bouchevesnes Combles and Hangard with a further identified view of the Canal du Nord. This area saw some of the heaviest fighting on the Western Front. Particularly noteworthy are three uncaptioned views of the destruction to the centre of Arras with these panoramas far more evocative than the ubiquitous snapshots. One image albeit poorly exposed shows a large homemade sign erected on the ruins of a church: 'Lens Veut Renaître' Lens Wants To Be Reborn. Several of the early images in the album are also of interest. One shows a field hospital identified as 'Hôpital de campagne américain' almost certainly one of several run by the American Ambulance Volunteer Field Service present in France from the beginning of the war. Another shows an establishment at Notre Dame de la Mer almost certainly the Ecole nationale belge des mutilés de guerre near Port-Villez. The other photographs are of the French Alps 1913; the baroque Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte near Melun four items 1914; a Paris streetscape 'Ce que l'on voyait en Juin 1915 du balcon de la chambre de Maman à Paris'; the Chateau de Brécourt three items 1915 including one with two women captioned 'Emma et Léonie dans la région de ma tranchée'; the Seine at Vernon two items 1915; and sepia-toned images of Mont Saint Michel and the shrine at Lourdes. unknown
