"A monumental masterwork of late antiquity Neoplatonism traditionally attributed to the Syrian philosopher Iamblichus c. 245–c. 325 AD. The book is structured as a passionate defense of theurgy—high ritual magic—written in response to a critical letter sent by his fellow philosopher Porphyry to an Egyptian priest named Anebo. Rather than treating religion as a purely intellectual or abstract mathematical exercise Iamblichus argued that human intellect alone cannot achieve union with the Divine; instead humanity requires sacred material rituals divine names and cosmic symbols provided by ancient priesthoods to elevate the soul and achieve henosis mystical oneness. While the text was heavily studied during the Renaissance via Marsilio Ficino's Latin translations the definitive moment for English-speaking scholars occurred in 1821 when the legendary Platonist Thomas Taylor published the very first English translation. Taylor known as "The Platonist" translated the text directly from the Greek injecting it with his own intense devotion to ancient polytheism and esoteric metaphysics. This translation deeply influenced the Romantic poets and became a bedrock text for 19th-century occult societies like the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn." Quantity Available: 2.
