Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing.; St. Andrew's Studies in Reformation History; 0.8 x 9.4 x 6 Inches; 242 pages; At first sight the subjects of piety and family life may appear to have little in common. Yet as the essays in this volume make clear there are in fact a number of shared features and points of contact that make the study of these issues a particularly fertile area for scholars of the Reformation period. Whether it be the concept of an individual's relationship with God - so often articulated in familial terms the place of domestic devotions or the difficulties that faced families split by rival confessional beliefs and mixed marriages this book demonstrates how piety and family life were interwoven in the social and theological landscape of early modern Europe. Inspired by the works of Steven Ozment the volume is divided into two sections each of which deals with a particular concern of his writings. The first four chapters address issues of Reformation theology and the medieval heritage whilst the remaining seven examine the spiritual life of families. Together they underline how modern scholarship by broadening its conceptual outlook and bringing together seemingly unrelated subjects can provide a more sophisticated understanding of the past. . 2005. 0754652483 . Laminated cover.; 2002 Oxford reprint of 1985 Edition; Oxford Historical Monographs; 1.1 x 8.84 x 5.9 Inches; 300 pages; European history from 1480 to 1570 was a period of turbulent change political upheaval profound moral questioning and urgent philosophical speculation. This book explores the intriguing role of the almost-forgotten Congregation of Benedictine monks of Italy and southern France in the events of these tumultuous years. From archival and published records the picture emerges of a closely-knit order of humanist scholars whose religious and philosophical studies later put them in a unique position to understand the Reformers. The book also casts light on the monks' fascinating reaction to the Reformation as they poured out a stream of academic books tracts sermons and poems in their attempt to heal the deepening rift between Rome and the Reformers. Critized and misunderstood by all sides the Congregation gradually fell into decline until it was finally suppressed under the Napoleanic invasions. . 2002. 0198229348 . Minor rubbing.; Continuum Studies in Philosophy; 0.79 x 9.29 x 6.3 Inches; 170 pages; Thomas Aquinas and John Duns Scotus are arguably the most celebrated representatives of the 'Golden Age' of scholasticism. Primarily they are known for their work in natural theology which seeks to demonstrate tenets of faith without recourse to premises rooted in dogma or revelation. Scholars of this Golden Age drew on a wealth of tradition dating back to Plato and Aristotle and taking in the Arabic and Jewish interpretations of these thinkers to produce a wide variety of answers to the question 'How much can we learn of God' Some responded by denying us any positive knowledge of God. Others believed that we have such knowledge yet debated whether its acquisition requires some action on the part of God in the form of an illumination bestowed on the knower. Scotus and Aquinas belong to the more empirically minded thinkers in this latter group arguing against a necessary role for illumination. Many scholars believe that Aquinas and Scotus exhaust the spectrum of answers available to this circle with Aquinas maintaining that our knowledge is quite confused and Scotus that it is completely accurate. In this study Alexander Hall argues that the truth about Aquinas and Scotus lies somewhere in the middle. . 2007. 0826485898 . Continuum International Publishing Group hardcover

2006réf. 1425Brill Academic Publishers. Fine in Fine dust jacket. Hardcover. New in plastic wrapping; Religions in the Graeco-Roman World 157; 9 x 2.5 x 5 Inches; 447 pages; This study deals essentially with the knowledge of the Palestinian Rabbis concerning paganism in the days of Mishna and Talmud. The Late Professor Saul Lieberman wrote that "Many isolated items on idolatry and idol worshippers are scattered all over rabbinic literature. It would require a large volume to treat this topic". This valuable and exhaustive study proves methodically that the Rabbis had deeper knowledge about Syrian Arabian Anatolian and Graeco-Roman Pagan cults than is commonly believed. Clear accessible and displaying considerable scholarship this work will undoubtedly provide an important challenge to both historians archaeologists and scholars of Rabbinic texts. Cette étude traite essentiellement du niveau de connaissances des Rabbins de Judée et de Galilée concernant les cultes païens dans le sens le plus large du terme. Le Professeur Saul Lieberman affirmait : "Many isolated items on idolatry and idol worshippers are scattered all over rabbinic literature. . 2006. 9004146431 . Unwrapped in plastic.; Jewish Identities in a Changing World V. 7; 9.25 x 0.75 x 6.25 Inches; 189 pages; The central issue in this book are the federal ideas in the Zionist political thought during seventy years from the early 1920s to the late 1990s. These ideas and plans had a double meaning and purpose: to find a suitable political bi-national structure for the Jews and Arabs in Palestine which will enable both of them to fulfill their national goals and to enable the Jewish people in the world to make Palestine their homeland by free immigration. The Zionist federative ideas were carried by different and even rival political parties and leaders ranging from right-wing nationalists to Social-Democrats and liberal humanists. But despite this diversity all of them were based on the liberal and democratic political tradition in Europe before World War I. These ideas were renewed in the State of Israel at the end of the last century. . 2006. 9004155295 . Brill Academic Publishers hardcover

In Brett's illuminating analysis stories such as the marriages of Abraham Isaac and Jacob as well as the narratives of Hagar Dinah and Tamar reveal that the editors of Genesis were directly engaged with contemporary issues--especially the nature of an authentic community--and that the book was designed to undermine the ethnocentrism of the imperial governors of the Persian period. . 2000. 0415141494 .
