These texts record the physical effects on the city of the foundation and expansion of the three neighbouring minsters and also of the removal of the New Minster to Hyde in about 1110. They record political religious and cultural aspects of the tenth-century reform of Benedictine monasticism of which Winchester was a leading centre. The splendid New Minster refoundation charter composed by Bishop AEthelwold and granted by King Edgar in 966 is here translated for the first time. A full examination is also made of the old minster confirmation charter probably fabricated in the reign of AEthelred. The volume also includes all Anglo-Saxon grants of land within Winchester and a reappraisal of the evidence for the beneficial hidation of the surrounding estate of Chilcomb. This volume is part of a three-book study in the Winchester Studies series of the Anglo-Saxon Minsters of Winchester including 4.i The Anglo-Saxon Minsters by Martin Biddle and Birthe Kjolbye-Biddle and 4.ii The Cult of St Swithun by Michael Lapidge. . 2003. 0198134134 . 2005réf. 3269Ashgate Publishing. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Hardcover. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing.; St. Andrew's Studies in Reformation History; 0.8 x 9.4 x 6 Inches; 242 pages; At first sight the subjects of piety and family life may appear to have little in common. Yet as the essays in this volume make clear there are in fact a number of shared features and points of contact that make the study of these issues a particularly fertile area for scholars of the Reformation period. Whether it be the concept of an individual's relationship with God - so often articulated in familial terms the place of domestic devotions or the difficulties that faced families split by rival confessional beliefs and mixed marriages this book demonstrates how piety and family life were interwoven in the social and theological landscape of early modern Europe. Inspired by the works of Steven Ozment the volume is divided into two sections each of which deals with a particular concern of his writings. The first four chapters address issues of Reformation theology and the medieval heritage whilst the remaining seven examine the spiritual life of families. Together they underline how modern scholarship by broadening its conceptual outlook and bringing together seemingly unrelated subjects can provide a more sophisticated understanding of the past. . 2005. 0754652483 . Laminated cover.; 2002 Oxford reprint of 1985 Edition; Oxford Historical Monographs; 1.1 x 8.84 x 5.9 Inches; 300 pages; European history from 1480 to 1570 was a period of turbulent change political upheaval profound moral questioning and urgent philosophical speculation. This book explores the intriguing role of the almost-forgotten Congregation of Benedictine monks of Italy and southern France in the events of these tumultuous years. From archival and published records the picture emerges of a closely-knit order of humanist scholars whose religious and philosophical studies later put them in a unique position to understand the Reformers. The book also casts light on the monks' fascinating reaction to the Reformation as they poured out a stream of academic books tracts sermons and poems in their attempt to heal the deepening rift between Rome and the Reformers. Critized and misunderstood by all sides the Congregation gradually fell into decline until it was finally suppressed under the Napoleanic invasions. . 2002. 0198229348 . Minor rubbing.; Continuum Studies in Philosophy; 0.79 x 9.29 x 6.3 Inches; 170 pages; Thomas Aquinas and John Duns Scotus are arguably the most celebrated representatives of the 'Golden Age' of scholasticism. Primarily they are known for their work in natural theology which seeks to demonstrate tenets of faith without recourse to premises rooted in dogma or revelation. Scholars of this Golden Age drew on a wealth of tradition dating back to Plato and Aristotle and taking in the Arabic and Jewish interpretations of these thinkers to produce a wide variety of answers to the question 'How much can we learn of God' Some responded by denying us any positive knowledge of God. Others believed that we have such knowledge yet debated whether its acquisition requires some action on the part of God in the form of an illumination bestowed on the knower. Scotus and Aquinas belong to the more empirically minded thinkers in this latter group arguing against a necessary role for illumination. Many scholars believe that Aquinas and Scotus exhaust the spectrum of answers available to this circle with Aquinas maintaining that our knowledge is quite confused and Scotus that it is completely accurate. In this study Alexander Hall argues that the truth about Aquinas and Scotus lies somewhere in the middle. . 2007. 0826485898 . Continuum International Publishing Group hardcover
