1856FIRST EDITION of the travel account of Israel Joseph Benjamin (1818-1864), born in Falticeni, Moldavia, who after losing his money at the age of 25, decided to travel in search of the Ten Lost Tribes, leaving behind his pregnant wife and 5-year old son. Fashioning himself as Binyamin ha-Sheni (The Second Benjamin), the medieval Benjamin of Tudela (12th century) being the first, he recorded his travels to the Jewish communities in the Near East, Central Asia, and North Africa. The book appeared first in French. Traveling through Turkey, Eretz-Israel, Syria, Armenia, Iraq, Kurdistan, India, Afghanistan, Singapore, China, Iran and Egypt, he described not only the economic and social conditions of the various Jewish communities, but also numerous local legends associated with tombs, caves and other geographical features. In Morocco he recorded a unique version of the martyrdom story of Sol (Suleika) Hachuel of Tangier (1817-1834), the news of whose martyrdom reverberated through Europe in the middle of the 19th century. 220x140mm. 240 pages. 1910Small octavo. Pp. 288. Portrait frontispiece and another plate. Some text ornaments. List of participants. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's grained crimson cloth, small plate of Jerusalem mounted on upper cover, black lettering, floral endpapers apparently lacking free endpaper, cloth bit faded and marked, slight wear at spine ends. Bit shaken, opens stiff, but nevertheless a lovely copy. ~ The travelogue of Wilhelm Alexander describes the pilgrimage in 1910 of 68 Jews, predominantly Hungarian, from Budapest to Palestine. They first travelled to Triest, where they embarked on the "Elektra", sailing to Alexandria. From Alexandria, via Cairo and Port Said, they arrived at Jaffa. Alexander's report is a remarkable account. It combines his critical, sometime painful observations, detailed descriptions of meetings with the local community and dignitaries, with a travelogues of pilgrimages to the holy places, interweaved with prayers and words of praise, which he brings in Hebrew. Very rare. Small octavo. Pp. 54. Plus 34 halftone photographic plates, printed on different paper, bound in. Original pictorial grey card wrappers, bit rubbed, corner creased, upper wrapper with tape repair for short tear. Else, a fine copy. ~ A fascinating small book, written and photographed by the Senior Chaplain to the Forces, Egyptian Expeditionary Force, with the intention to provide His Majesty's soldiers with a handy book of reference to Palestine and the Holy Land. The book contains a relatively large number of plates, depicting ancient and new towns and villages, holy shrines, landscapes, historical monuments and sites, and some inhabitants. Most fascinating are the images of pure military interest: a derelict tank; a cannon named "Jericho Jane"; and a mobile gun, nicknamed the "Finish Turk". Reverend Payne's text is a wonderful combination of historical background, actual information, traveller's notations, and Biblical contemplations. He previously wrote "Jerusalem, the City of the Great King" which was meant to serve as a guide book to Jerusalem. Both these books were sold in army canteen huts. In his Foreword, Philip W. Chetwode, Late Commanding 20th Army Corps, Palestine, writes: "I feel sure that all soldiers who find themselves, now or in the future, serving in Palestine, will be grateful to him for having provided them with such a useful book which cannot fail to add to the interest of the time they spend in the Holy Land." 1930ref. 149381930. Early twentieth century photograph documenting the Hajj pilgrimage at Mount Arafat near Mecca one of the central ritual sites of the annual Islamic pilgrimage required of Muslims able to undertake the journey. The gathering at Mount Arafat often called the "Standing at Arafat" forms the spiritual climax of the Hajj and brings together pilgrims from across the Islamic world for collective prayer and reflection. Photographic documentation of the pilgrimage during the early twentieth century provides visual evidence of the scale of participation in the ritual and of the sacred geography surrounding Mecca before the large scale infrastructural expansions of the later twentieth century. Original black and white photograph depicting thousands of Muslim pilgrims assembled on the slopes and summit of Mount Arafat also known as the Mount of Mercy outside Mecca. Circa 1930. The image records the second day of the Hajj pilgrimage when pilgrims gather at the site for communal prayer and supplication. Arabic writing appears in the lower right corner of the image. The photograph measures approximately 3.5 x 5.5 inches. The Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca represents one of the five pillars of Islam and has drawn pilgrims from across the Middle East Africa Central Asia and Southeast Asia for centuries. By the early twentieth century photography had become an important medium for documenting Islamic religious life and the movement of pilgrims across the Arabian Peninsula. Images of Mount Arafat are particularly significant because the site marks the central moment of the pilgrimage when participants gather for collective prayer believed to commemorate the Prophet Muhammad's final sermon and the broader Islamic tradition associated with the location. Light age toning and minor handling wear; overall very good condition. A clear early photographic record of one of the most important ritual gatherings in the Islamic world. unknown
