1947Best.-Nr. 383071947. JUDAICAZIONISM. Kriath Kodesh Call to Yeshiva Students. Jerusalem: Kislev 1947-48. Broadside measures 10 by 13-1/2 inches printed on recto. $1800.1947 Jerusalem Orthodox broadside against the Zionists who wish to uproot the Torah illustrative of the conflicts among Zionists and other factions in Jerusalem just prior to the creation of the state of Israel. This broadside states that it is the scholars of Torah who are the Neturei Karta the protectors of the city. The forces which were contending over the nature of the new society were divided into three broad groups Socialist Zionists known as the Histadrut middle-class elements anti-Socialist Revisionists and the Orthodox who could not imagine a Jewish presence in the land which did not exemplify the values and practices of the religious tradition Encyclopaedia Judaica. These three factions came to maturity as the Zionist settlement in Palestine increased tenfold from roughly 60000 in 1919 to 600000 in the 1940s. This broadside goes on to claim Whomever has any relationship with the Zionists-even enlisting in the Haganah-becomes a partner in actions against Judaism. Orthodox elements were dedicated to the building of an institutional power base for religious Jews so that they could compete as equals with the other groups and provide equal opportunity in the new country for those who shared the Orthodox religious faith. This body of opinion was deeply concerned that the total temper of the Jewish community should not be secularized. They did not want to become a religious ghetto in a non-religious Jewish society and they believed that it was their duty to bring religion even to those who opposed it The struggle between the Socialist and the middle-class elements in Israels society has been muted in the generation of statehood for a mixed economy now prevails. The conflict over religion and its relationship to public life has if anything become sharper within the sovereign parliamentary life of the Jewish state Encyclopaedia Judaica. Text in Hebrew. Faint fold lines. Fine condition. Scarce. unknown

This marvelous souvenir photo album composed of Ottoman-era albumen images captured not only recreated iconic religious scenes but also captured Jerusalemites in city streets and the Holy Land in the opening decades of the 20th Century. The album opens with the image of the “Street Scene inside Jaffa Gate” which captures Frederick Vester & Co.’s American Colony shop and photography studio in the right fore-ground of the image with bustling street and clock tower prominent in the center of the image. The American Colony produced created developed printed hand-coloured and sold thematic photographs stereoviews panoramic photos postcards custom hand-coloured glass lantern slides along with deluxe thematic souvenir albums such as this one. The series included here which incorporates a view of the room for the Last Supper and a nicely composed image of a beautifully terraced Garden of Gethsemane follows with the Stations of the Cross. The often incorporate residents in their daily lives watering donkeys pilgrims praying at Stations merchants and those wandering through the gates and winding streets of the ancient city. The photographers have captured the baroque & ornate Station Calvary the Church of the Holy Sepulchre a view of the Dome of the Rock and a teeming scene of women men and families seated and standing praying at the Wailing Wall. The American Colony emerged from the evangelical “End Times” beliefs inculcated by Horatio Spafford and Anna Larssen Spafford in 19th-Century Chicago who despite their profitable lectures the support & encouragement of Dwight Moody and at best questionable financial chicanery shipped out for the Holy Land in 1881 ahead of their creditors for $ 100000. Eventually the largely “celibate” commune controlled by “Messages from God” to Anna Spafford and through lectures and charity merged with Olof Larson’s “Doomsday” Larsonite believers along with Frederick Vester and a number of photographers began operating the American Colony store near the Jaffa gate and vastly expanding their tourist photographic operations. By 1910 they had several employees and the noted American Colony photographers such as Elijah Meyers and Lewis Larsson extended their talents across Palestine capturing not only the River Jordan but life in Bethlehem Bethany Syria Damascus and many other locations across the Ottoman Empire controlled areas. Although the American Colony projected a harmonious community bound together by simple Christian piety the sect was tightly controlled by Anna who not only restricted and monitored all correspondence by Colony members ordered shunning of those who ignored her dictates and maintained direct control over their finances. She also enforced marital celibacy until she “received a Message” that her daughter Bertha and Frederick Vester could marry in 1904. The second volume has two maps, one plate, and two plans (All are folded and huge sizes). The first map is one of the most attractive views of Jerusalem titled 'Novæ Ierosolymæ et Locorvm Circvmiacentivm Accvrata Imago'. Other is depicting attractively 'Montis Calvariæ' [i.e. Calvary, or Golgotha] which was, according to the canonical Gospels, a site immediately outside Jerusalem's walls where Jesus was crucified, as well as Bethlehem and Resurrection Temple's plans. Quaresmio was a writer and Orientalist of the seventeenth century. His father was the noble Alberto Quaresmi and his mother Laura Papa. At an early age, he was enrolled among the Franciscan Observantines at Mantua. For many years he held the chairs of philosophy, theology, and canon law, and became successively guardian, custos, and minister of his province. His long apostolate in the East and the magnificent works he has left us have secured Quaresmius worldwide fame, especially among earlier historians, Biblical scholars, and Orientalists. On 3 March 1616, he went to Jerusalem, where he became Guardian and Vice-Commissary Apostolic of Aleppo in Syria (1616-8), and Superior and Commissary Apostolic of the East (1618-9). During this period he was twice imprisoned by the Turks. In 1620 he returned to Europe, but in 1625 was back in Jerusalem, whence the following year he addressed from the Holy Sepulchre an appeal to Philip IV of Spain, inviting him to reconquer the Holy Land, and at the same time dedicating to him his work, "Hierosolymæ afflictæ". Between 1616 and 1626 he wrote his classical work, "Elucidatio terræ Sanctæ", adjudged by the learned a monumental contribution to history, geography, archæology, Biblical and moral science. During 1627-9 he was at Aleppo as papal commissary and as vicar-patriarch for the Chaldeans and Maronites of Syria and Mesopotamia. In 1629 he went to Italy to render an account to the Holy See of the state of the Eastern Churches; he then returned to the East, but how long he remained is not known. Meanwhile, he journeyed through Egypt and Sinai, the Holy Land, Syria, Mesopotamia, Cyprus, Rodi, Constantinople, and a large part of Asia Minor; he also visited Germany, France, Belgium, and Holland. In 1637 he was a guardian of S. Angelo (Milan), wherein 1643 he completed his other great work on the Passion of Christ. Original 1/3 black leather bdg. Six raised bands to spine. Marbled endpapers. Gilt title on spine and volume numbers. Folio. (38 x 28 cm). In Latin. 2 volumes set: (xxviii, [8], 761 p.; 893 p., 6 engraved maps and plans (5 folded)).
