Best.-Nr. 65527Jerusalem 1930. Original black & white photographic print 23 x 29 cm blind-stamp of the American Colony Jerusalem to lower right corner. Very good conditon. The American religious foundation and philanthropy that informally became known as the American Colony of Jerusalem was established in the Ottoman Empire in 1881 as a "Christian utopian society" led by American religious leader Horatio Gates Spafford and his Norwegian wife Anne Tobine Larsen Øglende. Largely concerned with providing social services education meeting spaces and medical care it became known for producing and publishing an important documentation photographic series of the area of Jerusalem starting in the early 1900s. The community lasted until the 1950s. Around 1900 Elijah Meyers a member of the American Colony began taking photographs of places and events in and around the city of Jerusalem. Meyers's work eventually expanded into a full-fledged photographic division within the colony including Hol Lars Lewis Larsson and G. Eric Matson who later renamed the effort as The Matson Photo Service. Their interest in archaeological artifacts such as the Lion Tower in Tripoli pictured here and the detail of their photographs led to widespread interest in their work by archaeologists. The collection was later donated to the Library of Congress [Jerusalem, 1930]. unknown

2015New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Oblong 4to. (30 x 34 cm). In English and Turkish. [12], 223, [1] p., color and b/w photos. Jerusalem in photographs from past to present.= Fotograflarla dünden bugüne Kudüs. Photographs (old); IRCICA archives. Photographs (new); Khaled Zaghari. Project managers; Halit Eren, Sefer Turan. This album was published within the framework of the 40th anniversary commemoration of the OIC, which has the problem of al-Quds and Palestine as its foremost cause. Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the OIC, wrote the Foreword. As he mentions, preservation of the multicultural character of the city with due respect of the populations and the shrines of each faith is an indispensable part of any acceptable solution of the problem. This character is well reflected in the authentic photographs in the album. Due to its special importance, al-Quds/Jerusalem was visited and described by many travelers. Then, the region became the first place of interest of the pioneer photographers. The Ottoman Palace was among the first in the world to acquire photographs of the region. The Yildiz photograph collection which was formed during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II contains a large number of them. The album contains the reproductions of 405 photographs gathered from IRCICA's archive comprising the Yildiz Photograph Albums and several other collections.

1885Best.-Nr. 140841885. Dome of the Rock interior nineteenth century records the exposed Foundation Stone at the center of one of Jerusalem's principal sacred monuments. Completed in 691-692 CE under the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik the Dome of the Rock stands on the Haram al-Sharif or Temple Mount a site central to Islamic and Jewish sacred traditions and also closely connected with Christian biblical history. The photograph preserves the relationship between the Rock itself and the architectural enclosure constructed around it more than a millennium earlier. Albumen print measuring 11" x 8.5" unmounted. The Foundation Stone occupies the foreground while columns arches and the decorated interior rise behind it. The surrounding colonnades are faced with marble in their lower sections with mosaic ornament above allowing the photograph to record both the irregular natural surface of the Rock and the elaborate architectural treatment of its enclosure. Jewish tradition associates the Temple Mount with the First and Second Temples and identifies the Rock with the site of the Holy of Holies; the Second Temple was destroyed by Roman forces under Titus in 70 CE. Islamic tradition connects the Rock with Muhammad's Night Journey and ascent to heaven while traditions associated with Abraham's attempted sacrifice also attach sacred meaning to the site. The Dome of the Rock occupies the Haram al-Sharif alongside the Al-Aqsa Mosque and other religious and educational buildings. Nineteenth century photographs of its interior recorded spaces that were considerably less accessible to many Western travelers than Jerusalem's exterior monuments while the albumen process circulated such views through the expanding photographic market for images of the Holy Land. Very good condition. A detailed nineteenth century interior view centered on the Foundation Stone and the marble and mosaic architectural decoration surrounding it. unknown
