1885ref. 139371885. American Colony Photo Department. Two views of Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives circa 1898 to the early twentieth century document the city and surrounding cultivated landscape during the late Ottoman era. Photographed before extensive twentieth-century urban expansion transformed the slopes east of the Old City the images preserve olive groves roads scattered buildings and broad topographical relationships between Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives. They support research into the historical geography of Jerusalem Ottoman Palestine pilgrimage photography landscape change and the role of resident photographic studios in shaping international visual knowledge of the Holy Land. The American Colony Photo Department was established in Jerusalem in 1898 and became one of the region's important commercial photographic services producing views of sacred sites settlements people and contemporary events for tourists and a wider international audience. Albumen photographs circa 1898 to the early twentieth century each measuring approximately 10½ × 14 inches and mounted recto and verso on the same 14 × 20 inch card. The recto presents Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives with mature olive trees occupying the foreground and the densely built city extending across the distant horizon. Printed along the lower center is the bilingual caption "Jerusalem. from Mt. of Olives. Jerusalem du Mont de Oliviers." while the American Colony Jerusalem emblem appears within the trunk of an olive tree at lower right. The verso captioned "Mount Olivet" shifts attention away from the distant city to the Mount itself: a hill rises in the background above olive trees dispersed buildings and a network of intersecting unpaved roads. The American Colony Jerusalem emblem appears at lower left. Together the paired compositions record both the celebrated panoramic viewpoint and the agricultural architectural and transportation landscape surrounding it. The views belong to a commercial photographic tradition that served travelers and pilgrims while also creating a sustained visual record of Jerusalem and Palestine. Unlike photographers who visited the region briefly members of the American Colony lived and worked in Jerusalem and the department developed an extensive stock of images depicting the city and its environs; a 1914 catalogue documents the circulation of such views as part of the firm's early commercial inventory. The mount has slight warping while both albumen prints retain strong visual clarity with no substantial defects noted; photographs near fine mount very good. The unusually large two-sided presentation offers complementary evidence of Jerusalem's urban profile and the comparatively open Mount of Olives landscape before later development. unknown
1885ref. 141131885. Jerusalem Holy Land Jaffa Bonfils Félix Adrien. Jerusalem views c. 1880s document the circulation of commercially produced photographic imagery of the Holy Land within late nineteenth century European and American visual culture supporting research into Ottoman Palestine early mass tourism and the construction of sacred geography through photography. Produced by one of the first large-scale commercial photographers operating in the Middle East the images establish how Jerusalem was framed for external audiences through carefully composed views of religious monuments fortified architecture and active urban spaces. The photographs provide direct visual evidence of the city prior to twentieth century political transformation with particular emphasis on Christian pilgrimage sites Islamic architectural presence and everyday economic activity occurring alongside monumental structures. Three original albumen photographs each approximately 11 x 8.5 inches unmounted depicting distinct but related views of Jerusalem. One image captioned "255 Eglise Ste-Anne et vue generale de Jerusalem" presents St. Anne's Church within a wider panoramic view of the المدينة combining ecclesiastical architecture with dense urban settlement. A second photograph shows the fortress near the Jaffa Gate with a foreground market scene including carts animals and clustered goods documenting commercial exchange occurring directly adjacent to the city's defensive walls. The third image depicts the Golden Gate emphasizing masonry detail and the monumental scale of Jerusalem's eastern wall a site of longstanding religious significance in Jewish and Islamic traditions. Each photograph bears the characteristic compositional clarity and captioning style associated with Bonfils' studio production. Produced during the final decades of Ottoman administration these photographs align with the expansion of photographic tourism and the increased circulation of Holy Land imagery among European and American audiences seeking visual access to biblical and historical sites. Bonfils' work functioned within a broader commercial network supplying images to travelers scholars and institutions shaping how Jerusalem was documented interpreted and disseminated internationally. Light surface wear minor tonal variation and occasional creasing consistent with albumen prints of the period; overall very good condition. Together the group provides a cohesive visual record of Jerusalem's architectural religious and commercial landscape at a moment when photography played a central role in defining the city's global historical image. unknown
1885ref. 140841885. Dome of the Rock interior nineteenth century records the exposed Foundation Stone at the center of one of Jerusalem's principal sacred monuments. Completed in 691-692 CE under the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik the Dome of the Rock stands on the Haram al-Sharif or Temple Mount a site central to Islamic and Jewish sacred traditions and also closely connected with Christian biblical history. The photograph preserves the relationship between the Rock itself and the architectural enclosure constructed around it more than a millennium earlier. Albumen print measuring 11" x 8.5" unmounted. The Foundation Stone occupies the foreground while columns arches and the decorated interior rise behind it. The surrounding colonnades are faced with marble in their lower sections with mosaic ornament above allowing the photograph to record both the irregular natural surface of the Rock and the elaborate architectural treatment of its enclosure. Jewish tradition associates the Temple Mount with the First and Second Temples and identifies the Rock with the site of the Holy of Holies; the Second Temple was destroyed by Roman forces under Titus in 70 CE. Islamic tradition connects the Rock with Muhammad's Night Journey and ascent to heaven while traditions associated with Abraham's attempted sacrifice also attach sacred meaning to the site. The Dome of the Rock occupies the Haram al-Sharif alongside the Al-Aqsa Mosque and other religious and educational buildings. Nineteenth century photographs of its interior recorded spaces that were considerably less accessible to many Western travelers than Jerusalem's exterior monuments while the albumen process circulated such views through the expanding photographic market for images of the Holy Land. Very good condition. A detailed nineteenth century interior view centered on the Foundation Stone and the marble and mosaic architectural decoration surrounding it. unknown
