1597 Geneva Bible Leaf: Book of Romans 13:11-15:19 "Brotherly Love

rif. 16768Single Leaf Page from Geneva Bible Book of Romans. 1597 Geneva bible leaf from the book of romans 13:11-15:19 page " brotherly love" vgc. London 1597. Over 400 year old Geneva "Breeches" bible leaf printed in London by the deputies of Christopher Barker "printer to the queenes most excellent maieftie anno dom. 1597 " - the book of romans. Recto has romans 13:11 - 14:14 "brotherly love & gentiles called" verso of the leaf has romans 14:15 - 15:19 "the weake brethren & god the judge" Leaf measures 10 3/8" x 7" 262mm x 177mm printed on old cotton linen paper also called rag paper. The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into English preceding the King James Version by 51 years. It was the primary Bible of 16th-century English Protestantism and was the Bible used by William Shakespeare and Oliver Cromwell. It was one of the Bibles taken to America on the Mayflower. This version of the Bible is significant because for the very first time a mechanically printed mass-produced Bible was made available directly to the general public which came with a variety of scriptural study guides and aids collectively called an apparatus which included verse citations that allow the reader to cross-reference one verse with numerous relevant verses in the rest of the Bible introductions to each book of the Bible that acted to summarize all of the material that each book would cover maps tables woodcut illustrations and indices. The annotations which are an important part of the Geneva Bible were Calvinist and Puritan in character and as such they were disliked by the ruling pro-government Anglicans of the Church of England as well as King James I who commissioned the "Authorized Version" or King James Bible in order to replace it. Surprisingly the Geneva notes were included in a few editions of the King James version even as late as 1715. unknown books

King James Bible Leaf First EditionABAA

1611 King James Bible Leaf

rif. 16764Leaf from a First Edition 1611 King James Bible 4th issue 1634 59 line pulpit folio leave The Leaf is an authentic original rag cotton Leaf from the first edition of King James Bible. It is large folio size and measures 11" wide x 16-1/2" tall. There were five separate issues of the 1611 printing in total; 1611 1613 1617 1634 and 1640/39. When King James authorized this large pulpit folio to be printed Richard Barker did so by facilitating 5 separate printing presses working tirelessly for two years. By 1611 the pages of several thousand copies were printed and ready to be bound and issued to the churches of England. It is estimated that in 1611 roughly 300 Authorized Bibles were issued to the churches. The remainder of the printed pages were stored away until the next issue was decreed by the king of England. Over the next two years this Bible was read in the churches and small errors began to be discovered. The most famous of these misprints is Ruth 3:15. In 1611 this verse was printed as "he" went into the city when the correct translation should read "she" went into the city. Thus naming the first edition-first issue of the King James Bible in 1611 as the Great "He" Bible. As these misprints were discovered these specific leaves and only these leaves were re-printed and then bound with the other leaves originally printed in 1611. These were then issued at the next decree of the king. The next issue was in 1613. At this point several of the known misprints were corrected along with Ruth 3:15 being changed to "she" thus the second issue was named the Great "She" Bible in 1613. Over the course of the next 29 years there were five pulpit folios issued to the churches with the majority of the leaves being printed originally in 1611 and with each issue small errors were fixed and these pages were reprinted. In the 4th and 5th issues 1634 and 1640 the text layout stayed exactly the same but with a larger number of small changes made to the marginal notes which suggests a larger reprinting done in the latter years. Finally in 1640 the 5th and last issue was released concluding the legacy of the 1611 printed folios. These misprints corrections and small changes will clearly define the different issue dates of the 1611 King James Bible. unknown books

BIBLE NEW TESTAMENTABAA

The New Testament of Jesus Christ Translated Faithfully into English out of the authentical Latin according to the best corrected copies of the same diligently conferred with the Greeke and other editions in divers languages .

Bound in full late 19th century crushed dark blue morocco gilt extra a.e.g.; ex library with a stamp on the title and a few in the text generally a large clean copy. The first Roman Catholic New Testament in English. Very scarce first edition of the important Rheims New Testament the first Roman Catholic version in English translated from the Vulgate. Like the Geneva Bible the Rheims New Testament was "produced by religious refugees who carried their faith and work abroad. Since the English Protestants used their vernacular translations not only as the foundation of their own faith but as siege artillery in the assault on Rome a Catholic translation became more and more necessary in order that the faithful could answer text for text against the 'intolerable ignorance and importunity of the heretics of this time.' The chief translator was Gregory Martinc. 1542-1582 . Technical words were transliterated rather than translated. Thus many new words came to birth. Not only was Martin steeped in the Vulgate he was every day involved in the immortal liturgical Latin of his church. The resulting Latinisms added a majesty to his English prose and many a dignified or felicitous phrase was silently lifted by the editors of the King James's Version and thus passed into the language" Great Books and Book Collectors 108. While Martin was responsible for the translation the controversial textual annotations in defense of Catholic doctrine are attributed to Richard Bristow one of the supervisors of the project; most copies of this edition were purportedly suppressed and destroyed because of these notes some of which were removed from later editions. The New Testament was issued separately and first in the hope that its successful sale would finance prompt production of the Old Testament; the two-volume Old Testament did not however appear until 1609-10 due to insufficient funds. Commonly known as the "Vinegar Bible" from the misprint "the parable of the vinegar" for "vineyard" in the headline above Luke Chapter 20. While a contemporary lambasted Baskett for this and other typographical errors in the text calling it a "Baskett-ful of errors" Oxford historian of printing Harry Carter states that "only Baskerville's Bible is its equal among English Bibles for beauty of type impression and paper" The History of the Oxford University Press 1975 I p. 171 In 1709 John Baskett purchased the exclusive royal patent to print Bibles in England control of which his family retained until 1799. This magnificent edition of the Bible is among Baskett's most important works highly regarded for its large elegant type; its 60 striking copper-engraved vignette head- and tailpieces; and its many delicately engraved historiated initials. Two distinct varieties occur. This copy is Darlow & Moule's issue A with additional engraved general title page depicting Moses writing the first words of Genesis here bound as frontispiece; vignette view of Oxford on the general title page; and vignette title page for New Testament depicting the Annunciation dated 1716. The present example is noted for both its lovely contemporary black morocco gilt binding and for being ruled in red throughout. Similar bindings on this edition of the bible are noted in both the Wardington Collection and in Mirjam Foot's Studies in the History of Bookbinding p. 409. Darlow & Moule 735; Herbert 942. This charming little binding was presented to the wife of The Reverend The Honourable Baptist Wriothesley Noel 1798-1873. On 17 October 1826 Noel married Jane Baillie of Dochfour whose distinguished family was descended from John de Balliol founder of Balliol College Oxford. We have seen several 'Bagster Bibles' in similar purple velvet bindings over the years - if they had a case it was a rather plain purple morocco - BUT - we have never seen a decorated vellum case as shown here. Samuel Bagster 1772-1852 was educated at Northampton under the Rev. John Ryland and after serving an apprenticeship with William Otridge commenced business as a general bookseller on 19 April 1794 in the Strand where he remained until 1816. A few years before he left the rarity and consequent costliness of all 'Polyglot Bibles' gave him the idea of supplying a convenient and inexpensive edition. In 1816 Bagster brought out "The English version of the Polyglot Bible" with a preface by T. Chevalier in foolscap octavo size containing a selection of over 60000 parallel references mainly selected and all verified by himself. The book was extremely successful.
