Preserved in a protective cloth case. INNOVATIVE AND HIGHLY UNUSUAL SCOTTISH CHIPPENDALE ROCOCO BINDINGS COMBINING CHINOISERIE AND NEOCLASSICAL ELEMENTS EXHIBITING THE INDEPENDENCE OF SCOTTISH WORK AT THIS TIME. The present example is a striking hybrid of late 18th-century decorative art in Britain the likes of which we have not encountered hitherto. Here "oriental" birds and peacocks are juxtaposed with patriotic depictions of Britannia uncharacteristically surmounted by a fleur-de-lis bold anchors columns sunbursts dripping garlands flowers sheaves of wheat and urns. Presented in the Chippendale style the present binder who is as yet unnamed introduces rococo ornaments while enclosing all of the above with an unmistakably neoclassical greek-key roll. EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY ROCOCO BINDINGS OF THIS QUALITY ARE RARE PARTICULARLY THOSE EXECUTED IN SCOTLAND. Rococo book arts in Scotland have been almost completely unexplored on account of the paltry number of examples with which we are able to study. Robert Adam's designs for the bindings of his "Ruins of Spalatro" 1764 is a bold statement of the neoclassical for he was justly celebrated. But we now know that Adam was not exclusively "Grecian." David Pullins' heroic archival research in Sir John Soane's Museum has shown that Adam received three previously unexamined commissions for a seemingly antithetical kind of decoration which he calls "neoclassical chinoiserie" specifically Adam's drawings for an unrealized chinoiserie looking-glass dated 1769 for Edwin Lascelles 1st Earl of Harewood. SOURCE: "Robert Adam's Neoclassical Chinoiserie" in: West 86th: A Journal of Decorative Arts Design History and Material Culture online. We would argue that the present bindings exhibit such a blend of Chippendale chinoiserie rococo and neoclassical. For a general note on English "Chippendale" and "Chinoiserie" bindings see G.D. Hobson "English Bindings of J.R. Abbey" p. 126. ¶ Our bindings may be linked to four others -- all greatly inferior -- which share the large "eagle" tool in common as noted by Mirjam Foot: 1. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST TRANSLATION OF THE NEW TESTAMENT FROM THE GREEK INTO MODERN PERSIAN: THE ROBERT BRUCE TRANSLATION "THE VERSION BY WHICH ALL LATER RENDITIONS ARE JUDGED." Published by the British and Foreign Bible Society the text builds upon the 1845/6 translation of the New Testament by Mirza Sayyed Ali Khan / Henry Martyn which was published with the Old Testament in a single volume likewise by the British and Foreign Bible Society. This was the first complete Christian Bible to be published in Persian. However: "After some years it was recognized that changes in the Persian language required a revision of the 1845 Bible. With the help of others Robert Bruce a missionary and representative of the British and Foreign Bible Society in Iran spent 20 years on this project. The revised New Testament was published in 1882 and further revisions of the whole Bible was published by the British and Foreign Bible Society in Leipzig in 1895. The so-called 'Bruce translation' is still the standard Bible translation in Persian and it is the version by which all later renditions are judged." Encyclopedia Iranica Persian Translations of the Bible online. As stated Bruce's translation of the New Testament first appeared in 1882 but it was deemed necessary to revise it further. Portions of Bruce's translation into modern Persian appeared in 1893 Pentateuch and 1894 Joshua to II Chronicles. Finally in 1895 Bruce's further revised translation of the New Testament the present edition was issued appearing independently from a one-volume edition of the complete Bible. Darlow and Moule 7358 state: "The Old Testament practically represents a new translation and the New Testament is a fresh revision." Robert Bruce 1833-1915 was an Irish born CMS Missionary active in Persia from 1869-1893. He was a Lecturer in Persian at University College London 1895-6 vicar at Durham 1896 and Rector of Little Dean Gloucester 1903. His Bible translation work was carried out with assistance of others including for example Karapet Ohaness from Julfa Persia. 1800rif. 9693London: Thomas Bensley for Thomas Macklin 1800. 7 volume set 48 cm Contemporary calf with decorative gilt stamped borders to boards with raised and gilt bands to backstrips. All edges gilt. Marbled endsheets and pastedowns. Some minor wear to corners. Some foxing to the plates. A few small dampstains. Some wear to backstrips and boards. The Macklin Bible is the largest Bible printed on a letterpress. Published serially between 1791 and 1800 in London this project was of one several ambitious projects that commissioned paintings of literary subjects exhibited them at their premises and sold engravings and/or editions of the relevant text including the engravings after the paintings by subscription. These 'literary galleries' sought to be both commercial printselling projects for the proprietors and to foster British history painting aligning with the ambitions of the Royal Academy to encourage a native school of painting in this genre. The foremost literary gallery was Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery which operated between 1789 and 1805. In addition to its 70 full-page plates the Bible includes head and tailpieces for each biblical book - 113 in total. All but two of the vignettes were designed by Philippe-Jacques de Loutherbourg who also painted 16 pictures for the full-page plates. The full-page plates and headpiece and tailpiece vignettes were published by Macklin and the text was printed for Macklin by Thomas Bensley. The type was cut by Joseph Jackson and Vincent Figgins Jackon's apprentice. The paper was made by Whatman. The instructions to the binder recommended binding the set in six volumes but this set like many others was bound in seven. Darlow & Moule 982. ESTC T123175. Herbert 1442. 1737rif. 49261Leiden: Jean Luzac 1737. First edition. Two volumes large quarto. 52 544; 2 545-1232 63 indices 1 corrigendapp. Text in two columns with Hebrew text and facing Latin translation interspersed with commentary. Titles in red and black with engraved vignettes. Contemporary speckled calf; gilt-tooled spine with raised bands and morocco lettering pieces; gilt dentelles; edges daubed in red and green. Light scuffing to boards and fading to spines. A very good set with crisp clean text throughout. First edition of this comprehensive commentary to the biblical Book of Job by the Dutch scholar of Semitic languages Albert Schultens 1686-1750 who maintained "that the true nature of the Hebrew language and the meaning of many of its words and idioms are to be found chiefly in the Arabic" Orme. Fifty-five pages of the indices constitute a brief lexicon and provide Latin as well as Arabic equivalents for more than 1000 Hebrew words. Schultens studied theology and eastern languages at Groningen where he received his degree in theology in 1709. After a brief career as a preacher in Wassenaar he was nominated professor of Hebrew and Jewish antiquities at Franeker in 1713. In 1729 he decamped for Leiden were he was first appointed reader in eastern languages and finally full professor in 1732. At this time a chief concern of Calvinist theologians was to liberate Old Testament exegesis from the Jewish Rabbinic as well as Catholic traditions. Schultens' influential and controversial solution was revealed as early as 1706 in his first public thesis Disputatio theologico philologica de utilitate linguae Arabicae in interpretanda S. Scriptura A Theologico-Philosophical Dissertation on the Utility of the Arabic Language for the Interpretation of the Holy Scriptures "a forceful attack" Brugman & Schröder on the Protestant sola scriptura methodology of Biblical exegesis. "With the help of Jacobus Golius' Arabic dictionary he perused with zeal and fervour the Old Testament and wrote prolifically. The lexical superiority of Arabic had led him to a reconsideration of the position of Hebrew: at first he had called Arabic 'the most splendid daughter of mother Hebrew' but in his oration of 1729 he proclaimed Hebrew and Arabic cognate twin sisters. This shocked conservative theologians as an outright profanation of God's Word" Brugman & Schröder. "In 1737 he applied his theories in his bilingual edition of the book of the prophet Job whom he regarded as an Arab. The Hebrew text and the Latin translation are all but totally submerged by the extensive commentary in which Schultens draws abundantly on Arabic texts such as the Hamasa an anthology of early Arabic poetry by the ninth-century poet Abu Tammam" Vrolijk & van Leeuwen. Schultens was not without his critics and by 1824 William Orme notes a turning of the tide: "Different opinions are entertained of the correctness of his views and also of his success in applying them; but it is now generally admitted that he carries his notions of the advantage of Arabic learning to the interpretation of the Scriptures too far." Jean Luzac 1728-1777 was a member of a well-known Huguenot family of printers; he published many works for the University of Leiden including three Hebrew books of Albert Schultens. Isaac van der Mijn is noted as the printer at the colophon of the second volume. Provenance: printed label of the Bibliotheca Seminarii Warmondani at the front endleaf of the first volume. Library stamping on front free endpaper indicating that this was owned and discarded by Redemptorist Communities in Ireland. Arabic text with Introduction in English. Ferrette identified on the title page as a missionary of the irish Presbyterian Church at Damascus believed that he had come up with a great typographic method for dealing with the vowel problem in Arabic type. Ferrette's suggested fix did not catch on and his suggested fix is now mostly forgotten. Most copies located by OCLC list W. M. Watts as publisher and are dated 1863 on the title-page. This copy with the same pagination lists Bagster as publisher and is undated. We suspect that Bagster persuaded the publisher or Ferrette to issue some copies with Bagster's name as publisher for sale in Bagster's theological bookstore. We doubt that it is a later or second edition. OCLC locates one copy Huntington with the Bagster imprint. It is dated as 1836 which seems likely to be an error in dating caused by transposing the last two numbers. Samuel Bagster hardcover books
