1635réf. 3642A very scarce edition of the Louvain version of the Bible printed in Troyes by Nicolas Oudot the younger of the two founder brothers of the dynasty of printers in Troyes. It is a small format printing consequently a fairly chunky book which is illustrated throughout with charming woodcut illustrations. The BN has a later edition published by Nicolas Oudot Troyes 1678 which is also the Louvain version edited by François Véron and revised by Antoine Girodon Chambers 1453. While this copy has suffered rather rough and ready solutions to maintaining its integrity - no easy matter considering its considerable girth - it remains an appealing object if not one in original condition. Internally it is fairly clean and the woodcut illustrations are charming. Small 8vo 115 x 90 mm pp. xii 971 37 numerous part-page woodcut illustrations throughout the text lightly browned throughout in contemporary vellum covered with later marbled paper and cloth backing: a workaday and rather ugly solution but sound with early manuscript notes on the front endpaper and the ownership inscription of John Wasley on the rear endpaper. Light rubbing to the extremities including the front joint but quite a nice copy; persistent but fairly even toning/foxing throughout otherwise contents clean. A beautiful copy in contemporary binding of the first American publication of the New Testament in French. It would be another 5 years before the complete Bible in French was published in the United States. Le Maistre de Sacy's translation from the Vulgate originally appear in 1667. 1557réf. 58961Lyon: Guillaume Rouille. Good. 1557. Leather. 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 540 pages; Lyon: Guillaume Rouillé 1557. 16mo about 4½" x 3". New Testament in parallel Latin and French. Period full calf over boards covers panelled in blind with small gilt corner tools and a central gilt device; later calf reback probably 20th c. with gilt-ruled raised bands red morocco spine label titled "Nouveau Testament " and spine date erroneously tooled "1547." Lacks the original backstrip. Upper and lower boards appear contemporary with the text block. Engraved architectural title page with Rouillé imprint and 1557 date. Text in two columns Latin and French in parallel verse for verse with decorative initials and head-pieces. Front endpapers and preliminary blanks before the engraved title are wanting as are rear blanks; final leaf present with "Fin de la table des Epistres et Evangiles de l'année. " Modern rebacking has left the spine somewhat stiff so the book does not open entirely freely though the text block remains soundly sewn and attached. Corners rubbed with small losses; board edges worn and surfaces slightly stressed; partial splits to the calf rebacking in the joints. Old paper repairs to inner hinges and at lower margin of title and terminal leaf. Expected general toning and occasional small spots or thumbsoiling to the text but no major staining and no intrusive contemporary annotation beyond 19th-century ink ownerships to the front pastedown. Rouillé's small-format parallel Latin–French New Testament in what appear to be its original 16th-century boards with later but now slightly over-stiff rebacking and some loss to preliminaries and blanks. Good only overall but complete in the text proper and with the engraved title intact. Good thus. . Guillaume Rouille hardcover
