1937réf. 6916Malden Mass: Jacob W. Powell 1937. Very good. 9¼” x 6¼”. Blue pebbled cloth title gilt. Pp. xvi 136 60 of 60 photographically illustrated plates interspersed. Very good: light wear a hint of toning to leaves. This is a detailed and heavily illustrated travelogue written by an AME Zion Elder and religious educator Jacob W. Powell. The first three pages of the book include a detailed chronology of Powell's life along with his numerous certifications related to religious teaching. From it we learn that Powell was born a Methodist Episcopalian in 1866 and converted to the AME Zion Church in Boston in 1881. He worked as a stenographer for a number of religious and civil clients before becoming ordained a Deacon and later Elder. Powell served as Pastor of a few AME Zion and Baptist churches and according to this book's dedication taught over 4000 students during his 54-year career. The book is simultaneously a travel log travel guide and collection of Powell's short essays on various religious subjects. It relays Powell's account of his six-week tour and is broken up into 25 chapters each with numerous subdivisions. Powell described his observations of myriad sights and experiences throughout Rome Naples Genoa Marseilles Alexandria and Cairo and Palestine. He related an incident involving a “Mohammedan lad” who took a liking to him and his group while they were visiting mosques surmising that “perhaps my similar complexion helped to draw him toward me” and of whom he snapped a photograph angering a crowd of adults who had gathered nearby. His writing while often rambling is also often action-packed such as this near accident returning to Marseilles: “ANOTHER THRILLING INCIDENT—as it looked to me our ship came perilously near 'going on to rocks' just before we reached the narrow outlet from Marseilles Harbor . . . . jagged rocks loomed ominously on either side of this narrow outlet as the 'Excalibur' pushed her prow forward. Hardly any saw the danger until the Captain in the pilot house looked out of his window and shouted to his deck officers 'Throw out your sheet anchor!' Immediately the command was obeyed good discipline aboard this ship and the staunch vessel stood fast within fifty yards or so from the perilous rocks!” Powell's descriptions are complemented by detailed historical and geographical data as well as 60 plates of maps illustrations and photographic images. He clearly intended this to be a guide book as well as he provided histories of seemingly countless tourist destinations as well as information on languages locals cities he did not get to visit and more. He also waxed on many religious topics including the history of Christianity provided brief statements of the beliefs of Muslims and Jews and devoted four pages to his outline on the symbolism of the book of Revelation. Also of note is a rare piece of ephemera laid in to the book: Powell's promotional order form for this book as well as others he'd written along with a number of blurbs. A meticulous and well-illustrated travelogue and collection of religious essays by an African American educator and religious leader. OCLC locates five copies. [Jacob W. Powell] unknown books

Title in red and black; separate half-titles for each part. Woodcut lettrines; printed side notes. Numerous citations in Hebrew and Greek. Contemporary vellum soiled slight separation at upper joint. Mild embrowning at the edges. Text fine and crisp throughout. Overall a very good copy. First edition of this compendium one of two issues the other published by Johann Coster in which nine celebrated early modern Christian hebraists advance their views on the original pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton YHWH. The celebrated hebraist and Old Testament scholar Adriaan Reland 1676-1718 judged by Bayle to be one of the most learned writers of the eighteenth century is best remembered for his works on Jewish antiquities. He edited various other collections of essays and dissertations including Analecta Rabbinica 1702; Dissertationes miscellaneae 1706-1708; Dissertationes de nummis veterum Hebraeorum 1709. His opinion on the proper pronunciation of YHWY agrees with the first five hebraists in the present collection as well as the current scholarly consensus. I.- Johannes Drusius the elder 1550-1615 Tetragrammaton sive de nomine Dei proprio. II. - Sixtinus Amama 1593-1629 De nomine tetragrammato. with a response to Fuller. III. - Louis Cappel 1585-1658 Oratio de SS. Dei nomine tetragammato YHWH ac genuina ejus pronunciatione -- see Burnett Buxtorf 229: "Shortly after his appointment ot Saumur in 1613 he began his studies in biblical philology and textual criticism. His lecture on the Tetragrammaton delivered on June 22 1614 attests to a preoccupation with methodology which would distinguish his later work." This was later printed in the Arcanum punctationis 1624 and here in our volume. IV. - Johann Buxtorf the elder 1565-1629 Dissertatio de nomine YHWH -- see Burnett Buxtorf 124: "For the Tetragrammaton alone Buxtorf devoted ten pages of discussion in his 1615 Lexicon Hebraicum et Chaldaicum." 1622réf. 2666Middelburg: Jan van der Hellen for Jan Pieterss. van de Venne 1622. 4to 233 x 176 mm. 16 60 19 1 blank pp. Large emblematic publisher’s mark on title-page four half-page engraved illustrations by Pieter de Jode 2 Pieter Serwouters and Willem van der Passe after Adriaen van der Venne. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials. Short marginal tear to title light dampstaining to first and last leaves. Later parchment over pasteboards ms. spine title. Provenance: Samuel Ashton Thompson Yates 1842-1903 bookplate dated 1894. First Edition of Cats’ retelling of the Biblical tale of Queen Vasthi the first wife of the Persian king Ahasuerus who refused her husband’s summons to appear before his guests wearing the royal crown to display her beauty in the Jewish tradition of the Midrash she was ordered to wear nothing else which would better explain her refusal. For this she was punished with exile and the King went on to marry another strong-willed woman Esther. The tale was especially familiar to 17th-century Dutch audiences for whom Esther had come to symbolize Netherlandish resistance to Spain. The first part of Cats’ word-playing verse adaptation whose title may be translated as The Theater of Manly Respectability is a long speech in the Queen’s defense and in defense of all women followed by a speech against her and in favor of “Manly Respectability.” The work concludes with the Judgment which is that Vasthi should obey her husband because women’s subservience to men is a law of nature. A final poem titled “Aller Princessen Spiegel aller Vrovwen Spoor” is illustrated with an engraving showing the humbled queen wearing a yoke around her neck. The parallels and differences between the Biblical Ahasuerus and Herodotus’ tale of King Candaules supplied in Latin and Dutch translations in an appendix whose wife’s rebellion was more successful are fully exploited by Cats and by the illustrator Cats’ usual partner the painter and engraver Adriaen van de Venne whose brother Jan published the edition. Van de Venne’s engravings notably the scene of Candaules’ naked wife being surprised by Gyges served as models for a number of Dutch painters. The Van de Venne brothers played a central role in the dissemination of Cats’ poetry and it is their joint production that makes the works come alive: “The complete works of Cats together with Van de Venne’s illustrations formed a sort of housebook of the Dutch people which remained popular for two centuries.” Bol p. 117. Following the privilege on the title verso is a letter from the publisher to all bailiffs officials and readers ”Noodige Waersschouwinge.” complaining of the many counterfeit editions of an earlier Cats work the 1620 Self-stryt and explaining how to tell them apart. A second edition without the Noodige Waersschouwinge appeared later in 1622 and several further editions followed. De Jonge van Ellemeet Museum Catsianum 97; Bol Adriaen Pietersz. réf. 10878vo. 200 x 180 mm. 8 x 6 ¾ inches. 302 pp. Manuscript text in neat hand. Bound in half-leather and marbled boards gilt rules on spine. Some rubbing to spine ends a later ownership name stamp on front pastedown. Manuscript lecture notes from Prof. Leonard Woods' class in theology taught at the Seminary in Andover. The student introduces the lectures in the first two pages: "West Chester Society Colchester Conn. -- In view of an examination preparatory to my ordination I presented to the Council the following confession of faith." He follows this information with a nine page table of contents for the lectures which begins with "On the inspiration of the Scriptures." In clear prose he recounts what he was taught by Prof. Woods while he was a student at Andover for those several years. Although unsigned these lecture notes most likely belong to Jacob Scales 1788-1873. Scales was born in Freeport Maine graduated from Dartmouth in 1817 and went on to Andover Theological Seminary finishing his degree there in 1820. In December of that year he was ordained pastor of the Congregational Church at Colchester Connecticut. In 1827 Scales became a pastor in Henniker NH; then Cornwall Vermont in 1839. Here he ran afoul of the local anti-slavery society according to Lyman Matthews' "History of the Town of Cornwall Vermont" Cornwall VT: 1862 pp. 182-6. A remonstrance by ten members of the church felt strongly he should not be installed. An ecclesiastical council was convened: "The remonstrants acknowledge that upon the subject of slavery Mr. Scales in sentiment is correct; but they allege that as a practical abolitionist he does not come up to the standard of the American Anti-Slavery Society. Of this however no proof was adduced. This Council can recognize no other standard than the Word of God." and therefore the church proceeded to install him. His tenure was not always smooth and he was dismissed in 1842. He became an acting pastor at Plainfield from 1842-1861. see his brief biography in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register v. 66 p. 50 Scales published several sermons and other works in his lifetime and Dartmouth College has a collection of his papers. Leonard Woods 1774-1854 was a professor of theology at Andover from 1808 until his retirement in 1846. He was a member of the Congregational Church and an orthodox Calvinist. He continued to write and prepare his works for publication. A five volume set of his lectures sermons letters and essays was published in Andover between 1849-1851. see: McClintock and Strong Biblical Cyclopedia Harper & Bros.: 1880 for more information on Woods. . 1836réf. List3741New York City 1836. Twelve documents totaling fourteen pages. See description for full inventory. Generally very good to excellent. Cary Ludlow 1736-1814 was a lawyer and merchant from the prominent New York City Ludlow family. In 1768 Ludlow had bought a property at 9 State Street on the Battery with plans to build a mansion there-lower Manhattan was becoming fashionable after the building of the Kennedy Mansion at 1 Broadway by Archibald Kennedy 11th Earl of Cassilis.1 However Ludlow was an ardently pro-Stamp Act Tory and because of this had to flee with his family to England around the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. Upon his return in 1784 he began work on the 9 State Street mansion which was completed around the mid-1790s shortly after the marriage of his daughter Catherine 1767-1849 to Jacob Morton 1761-1836. Later New York City Comptroller and Major General of the New York Militia during the War of 1812 Morton-who also appears in these documents-had been the marshal at George Washington's first inauguration.2 After the Revolutionary War many of New York's high society were moving to lower Manhattan especially on Front Street State Street and Broadway around Bowling Green and the Battery.1 The collection of legal filings offered here document this process of gentrification: they show Ludlow purchasing multiple lots surrounding his property on State Street from members of the lower classes. In particular Ludlow buys lots occupied by John Roorbach a grocer and Richard Anders an oysterman. Roorbach and Anders may have been renters or partial owners as the deals go through Samuel Craig whose occupation is listed as "gentleman" Robert Tuite Kemble formerly an officer of the British Army3 Cornelius Rosevelt likely of the Roosevelt family; also listed as "gentleman" and others. Following Cary Ludlow's death in 1814 the 9 State Street estate passed to Catherine and Jacob Morton and became a social center for the well-to-do epitomized by the 1824 ball the couple threw for the Marquis de Lafayette. However after Jacob Morton's death in 1836 the house became a boarding house; by the 1870s the 26-room mansion was home to "twenty-six Irish families" and Battery Park had become a spot where "roughs played base-ball" and vendors sold "horrible sweetmeats wormy apples and villanous lemonade". 1 The documents offered here illustrate several features of life for the elite during the Early Republic era: first they are primary documents of the gentrification of a neighborhood showing the displacement of its lower-class residents and the consolidation of property in the hands of a small number of wealthy owners; second the names appearing in them-Ludlow Morton Kemble-indicate that other than a small blip during the Revolutionary War financial ties outpaced political ones. He was appointed secretary to the Duke of Marlborough in 1756 and continued to serve the Marlborough family after the Duke's death in 1758 living for several years at Blenheim. He published a description of the Marlborough collection of antique gems in 1783. Bryant's name is chiefly associated with the present work the first two volumes of which first appeared in 1774. Though Bryant has been criticized for his lack of grounding in Eastern languages and for his misleading system of etymology it is generally agreed that the research that went into it was remarkable.
