1725réf. ABC_50365Amsterdam 1725. Ca. 160 x 289 cm. Covens & Mortier Mounted on linen folded and kept together in a paper slipcase the whole kept in a book-shaped box. Rare monumental wall map of the County of Holland and the Lordship of Utrecht engraved on forty copper plates and ranking among the most ambitious Dutch wall maps of the 18th century. This edition was published by Covens & Mortier the foremost Amsterdam map publishers of the 18th century and represents the 5th known state of Jacob Aertsz. Colom's 1600-1673 celebrated wall map first published in 1639. The plates had previously passed through the hands of Frederik de Wit 1630-1706 before being acquired by Covens & Mortier who revised the publication by adding a new French title cartouche while making only minor alterations to the original engraving. The imprint advertises the map as consisting of 40 sheets that could be assembled into a wall map measuring 11 by 6 feet. The map presents an extraordinarily detailed survey of Holland and Utrecht depicting every city town village and hamlet together with an intricate network of rivers canals lakes dykes roads polders islands and coastal features. The precision of its topographical information reflects the high standard of Dutch land surveying during the Golden Age and illustrates the intimate relationship between landscape water management and urban development in the Republic.Besides its geographical importance the map is distinguished by its rich decorative programme. Two smaller cartouches contain the Latin title and distance scales while the impressive French title cartouche is lavishly ornamented with allegorical figures and symbols celebrating the prosperity of the Dutch Republic. A fisherman represents the maritime wealth of Holland while a farmer symbolises the agricultural riches of the inland provinces. Above them appears the armorial achievement of the House of Orange flanked by military trophies navigational instruments and exotic fruits visual references to Dutch naval power commerce and colonial expansion. Additional decorative elements include banners rural scenes and sailing vessels all executed in the refined Baroque style characteristic of Dutch decorative cartography. With some occasional browning. Otherwise in very good condition.l Donkersloot no. 704; Koeman Handleiding p. 33; WorldCat 919492820 3 copies; unknown
1792réf. 19594Amsterdam 1792. All drawings carefully tipped onto board leaves several mounted within elegant grey ink-washed borders. With 84 drawings each ca. 7.3 x 12.7 cm. A large and remarkable series of original model drawings prepared for the engraved plates illustrating the Economische Liedjes by Betje Wolff 1783-1804 and Aagje Deken 1741-1804 first published in three volumes by Isaac van Cleef in The Hague in 1781.The engraved plates however were produced much later after the drawings by Pieter Harmen Ionxis and were published separately by J. Allart in Amsterdam between 1792 and 1798 published in 10 parts of 12 plates each. Each plate included its engraved title within the oblong space beneath the image. The present work comprises 84 of the 120 original drawings made for the series one for each song: 9 drawings for the 35 songs of the first volume 40 for the 45 songs of the second volume and 35 for the 40 songs of the third volume. The engraved plates were printed in the same format as these preparatory drawings. The artist Jacob van Meurs 1760-1824 known primarily as a portrait painter and painter of fruit and genre scenes created with this series one of the most significant contributions to Dutch 18th-century book illustration. The Economische Liedjes were written for de gewone burgerluidjes- the ordinary people and lower middle classes - and Van Meurss illustrations reflect this social world with remarkable sensitivity.Unlike the more refined interiors and fashionable costumes found in the illustrations of Jacobus Buijs 1724-1801 who mainly illustrated works aimed at the prosperous middle classes Van Meurs depicted a more modest and soberer environment: servants craftsmen gardeners small tradesmen and ordinary household scenes. His drawings provide an unusually vivid insight into the clothing domestic surroundings and daily life of the Dutch bourgeoisie in the second half of the 18th century. Accompanied by a computer-printed index listing the titles of all songs illustrated by the drawings. Otherwise in very good condition.l Cf. Buijnsters Bibliogr.
