1964ref. 69141Osnabrück: Otto Zeller 1964. Photomechanical reprint. Hardcover. Octavo 23.5 cm Yellow cloth over boards stamped in black and gilt. Light foxing to the text block edges. Traces of light soiling to the front board of volume 1. Text in French and Hebrew. Photomechanical reprint of the 1856-1866 edition. Moses ben Maimoun 1138-1204 more commonly known as Maimonides in the English language and as Rambam in Hebrew is viewed as the greatest Jewish philosopher of the Middle Ages. This work The Guide of the Perplexed is his magnum opus. It is an in-depth treatment of Jewish thought and practice that aims to resolve the conflict between religious knowledge and secular. Although strongly influenced by the Neo-Platonized Aristotelianism that had sprouted in Islamic circles it departs from the dominant modes of Aristotelian thought by emphasizing the limits of human knowledge and the questionable foundations of significant parts of astronomy and metaphysics. Maimonides was also a well-known physician who wrote medical treatises on numerous diseases and their cures. Later generations of philosophers wrote detailed commentaries on the works of Maimonides which heavily influenced thinkers such as Aquinas Spinoza Leibnitz and Newton. OCLC Judah ben David Hayyuj c. 945 - 1000 was a Spanish-Jewish grammarian. His thorough knowledge of Arabic grammatical literature led him to apply to the Hebrew grammar the theories elaborated by Arabic grammarians and thus to become the founder of the scientific study of that discipline. The preceding scholars had found the greatest difficulty in accounting by the laws of Hebrew morphology for the divergences existing between the regular or so-called "strong" verbs and the "weak" verbs. A hopeless confusion appeared to reign here in Hebrew; and much ingenuity was spent in endeavoring to discover the principles that controlled the conjugation of the verbs. To substantiate his theories he wrote the treatises upon which his reputation chiefly rests the Kitab al-Af'al Dhawat Huruf al-Lin The Book of Verbs Containing Weak Letters and Kitab al-Af'al Dhawat al-Mathalain The Book of Verbs Containing Double Letters which comprise this particular book. 1959ref. 48773Jerusalem: Mossad Ha-Rav Kook 1959. Ex-Library. Hardcover. g. 3 volumes. Quarto. Continuous pagination of the first two volumes. lxxxviii. 524 89pp. Beige greenish cloth with black lettering to covers and spines. The Guide of the Perplexed is Maimonides' best known work. This specific edition was edited by Yehuda Kauffmann Even Shemuel a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem whose Neo-Kantian outlook is apparent in his commentary and remarks. Further remarkable is the easy readable regular Hebrew print unlike the "Rashi"- print this work is normally printed in. Text in Hebrew. Bindings with some sunning to spines of vol. 1&3. Front and back covers with some light smudges and scratches endpapers with aging. Heads and tails slightly bumped. Some pages with light sunning to edges. Bindings in overall good interiors in good condition. The Arabic original Dalalat al-Hairin was completed about 1200 in Cairo Egypt. Shortly therafter it was translated into Hebrew as The Moreh Nevukhim. The first translation upon which this edition draws from a literal one was made by Samuel Ibn Tibbon with Maimonides' advice and completed in 1204. Maimonides wrote the Guide for someone who was firm in his religious beliefs and practices but having studied philosophy was perplexed by the literal meanings of Biblical anthropomorphic and antropopathic terms. Hence the title Maimonides also undertook here the explanation of Biblical parables. Thus the Guide is devoted to the philosophic interpretation of Scripture or to use Maimonides' terms to the "science of Law in its true sense" quoted in Encyclopedia Judaica p. 771. Ephraim Moses Pinner was a 19th century German Talmudist and archeologist. His first work published in 1831 the "Kizzur Talmud Yerushalmi V'Talmud Babli" was a translation of sections of both the Jerusalem and Babylonian Talmuds. This was the beginning of his larger project to produce a translation of the entire Talmud. Pinner's work took him to libraries across Eastern Europe. He even secured the aid of the anti-Jewish Czar Nicholas I and dedicated the translation to him. Only the first of the proposed 28 volumes was ever published. Besides for securing sponsorships from royalty across European Pinner gained letters of approbation from several rabbis none of whom lived in Russia. This was down apparently through some trickery on Pinner's part. Published by the author hardcover books

The Mishneh Torah is the only Medieval-era work that details all of Jewish observance including those laws that are only applicable when the Holy Temple is in existence. Its title is an appellation originally used for the Biblical book of Deuteronomy and its subtitle "Book of the Strong Hand" derives from its subdivision into fourteen books: the numerical value fourteen when represented as the Hebrew letters Yod 10 Dalet 4 forms the word yad "hand". Maimonides intended to provide a complete statement of the Oral Law so that a person who mastered first the Written Torah and then the Mishneh Torah would not need to refer to any other legal text. Contemporary reaction was mixed with strong and immediate opposition focusing on the absence of sources and the belief that the work appeared to be intended to supersede study of the Talmud. Maimonides responded to these criticisms and the Mishneh Torah endures as an influential work in Jewish religious thought. According to several authorities a decision may not be rendered in opposition to a view of Maimonides even when he differed from the understanding of the Talmudic passage for in such cases the presumption was that the words of the Talmud were incorrectly interpreted. Likewise: "One must follow Maimonides even when the latter opposed his teachers since he surely knew their views and if he decided against them he must have disapproved their interpretation. However despite his stature in Yemen and the Sephardic world the Rabbinic authorities from the 13th century onwards did not base their legal rulings and interpretations of Halicha on Maimonides. The Mishneh Torah was compiled between 1170 and 1180 4930-4940 while Maimonides was living in Egypt and is regarded as Maimonides' magnum opus. Text in Hebrew.
