The Mishneh Torah was compiled between 1170 and 1180 while he was living in Egypt and is regarded as Maimonides' magnum opus. It consists of fourteen books which subdivide into sections chapters and paragraphs. To this day it is the only post-Talmudic work that details all of Jewish observance including those laws which are only applicable when the Holy Temple is in place. Corners bumped spine faded. Scuffing rubbing staining to boards. Hinges starting back board. In Hebrew and English. Good condition. R. Moses Maimonides Rambam was a 12th century Jewish philosopher and halachic legal scholar. A highly controversial figure both during his lifetime and after his death but generally acknowledged as the preeminent Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. He was born in Córdoba Spain but fled as a child from the Almohad persecution. He eventually settled in Egypt where he served as a rabbi physician and philosopher. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah his only work not in Arabic still carries canonical authority particularly within the Yemenite Jewish community as the codification of Talmudic law. His other work includes a commentary on the Mishnah entitled Kitab al-Siraj Kitab al-Fara'I a book on precepts and the philosophical work Dalalat al-Ha'irin known in Hebrew as the Moreh Nevukhim The Guide to the Perplexed. The major premise is an attempted philosophical/theological reconciliation of the Hebrew Bible and Greek knowledge. This work came to play a central role in all subsequent major controversies over philosophy within the Jewish community during the Middle Ages. Bloch hardcover books

1952ref. 26607New York: Exposition Press. Fine. c.1952. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket a nice clean copy with no discernible wear. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "To / Doctor Charles: -- / The best of luck always / and thanks for your / buoyancy and happiness. / It's such a tonic. / Simply and Happy / Reading! / Affectionately / Eva E. Moses / Pleuty." Vanity press novel set in the early 20th century about the life of a family that migrates from Minnesota to Saskatchewan. Although there's generally a kind of broad assumption that most vanity press novels are thinly-disguised autobiography in this case one contemporary reviewer of the book noted that "one has the feeling while reading this story that Eva Moses is writing not so much from actual experience as from hearsay." An uncommon book this copy unfortunately lacking the dust jacket. Signed by Author . Exposition Press hardcover books

The book is primarily about the most notable episode in the life of Miguel Carrillo Ayala 1908-1965: his historic 1936 solo flight -- in an airplane he built himself dubbed "Pinocho" -- from Zitácuaro to Mexico City a distance of about 150 km. ref. SAV153Hardcover. Good. Italy possibly Piedmont 17th century. 181 leaves 96 x 140mm. A pocket-sized copybook written in a uniform italic script in brown ink recto only on laid paper. Each page with double ruled border framing Latin verse lines from De rebus gestis Alexandri Magni The Life and Exploits of Alexander the Great by Quintus Curtius Rufus with Italian translation and proverbial sayings in Italian on miscellaneous subjects signed intermittently Il Zangrandi or Gioseppe Zangrandi. Oblong contemporary sheep over pasteboard; some slight worming mostly at beginning and end some minor chips on spine and back cover otherwise good. Ownership signature of Moses Baruch Carvaglio on the last leaf in Italian Io Moise filgiolo sic di Jacob di Josef Baruch Carvaglio under an anecdotal note in his hand about an incident of extreme cold which froze over the lagoon and parts of the Venetian canal in 1708. An interesting 17th-century calligraphic copybook of excerpts from the great Roman history of Alexander the Great and with popular sayings written in Italian and Latin once owned by important Venetian Jewish coral merchant Moses Baruch Carvaglio. The regal Alexandrian history "De rebus gestis Alexandri Magni" by Roman historian Quintus Curtius Rufus was much appreciated in Italy during the early modern period. Adaptations for Alexander romances and an incunable tradition was in place from at least the 1470s. The name Il Zangrandi seemingly the writer of this collected verse could be Virgilio Giangrandi 1589-1630 a Piemontese typographer active in Savigliano at the turn of the seventeenth century. References to this printer under the name Il Zangrandi and working with works in Latin verse do exist if only fragmentary. We do know that along with his brother Giovanni Virgilio Giangrandi moved from Milan to Asti in 1588 and their printing company remained in operation until at least 1691. The Zangrandi press was also known to produce religious and biographical works. It is possible Virgilio or an apprentice was in part responsible for creating this eclectic copybook which celebrates portions of the Roman Alexandrian epic and intersperses sayings from his native Italian. An interesting layer to the history of this manuscript is the eighteenth century ownership inscription of Moses Baruch Carvaglio a successful merchant and Jewish man based in Venice. In the 1730s along with his father and brother Moses operated a well-known trade business in coral beads. The Carvaglio family would have been tied to profitable Venetian mercantilism for most of the eighteenth century. The scribal beginnings of this copybook remain mysterious nevertheless two plausible figures from early modern Italy contributed to its creation and care. hardcover books

ref. 8128N.P.: N.P. 1982. Very good. 11” x 8½”. Thin card wrappers/loose leaves three-hold and punched printed rectos only. pp. 61. Very good: front wrap with staining from paperclip otherwise bright and clean throughout. This is a screenplay for an African American soap opera which never aired Success. The title page mentions that “this story is created by the author from a true life experience with some fictional creativity.” The author's name is too common to successfully research and we'll note that IMDB has a listing for a Tom Moses who was a Black actor who appeared on McCloud and Columbo in the early 1970s. This script predates television's first Black soap opera Generations which premiered March 27 1989 and ran through January 1991. The plot of this pilot begins with flashbacks initially in Washington D.C. where we meet Angela Saunders a ten year old girl who overheard her parents arguing and learned that her father was not her biological father. The next scene took place in 1974 and Angela asked her mother about her birth father wanting to know who he was and it was revealed that he was “in Hollywood” and that his name was Tom Phillips. The action then cuts to 1983 with Tom reading a letter from Angela asking if he was her real father and we learn that Tom was an actor and also ran a performing arts school. Later Angela goes to California to meet Tom and stay with his family; on arrival she asks if her mother could visit as well. Tom's wife agrees setting up one of the story's major conflicts. Interspersed throughout is standard soap opera fare including sexual trysts a philandering producer familial misunderstandings searing hatreds blackmail and other juicy bits. OCLC locates no copies.
