1813ref. 022710Andover: Flagg & Gould. One of the earliest American publications using a Hebrew font. Original boards. First Edition. Flagg and Gould the press of Andover Theological Seminary acquired fonts in Greek and Hebrew type and because nobody else knew how to set them Stuart did it himself. Scott Paradise noted in his History of Printing in Andover that this book was the first publication using a Hebrew font to be published in America but actually several other such publications preceded it. With his work in Hebrew grammar and criticism Stuart was called the leader of Hebrew scholarship in America Americas most competent philologist and grammarian the undisputed leader in American exegetical science and one of the 19th-centurys most notable American scholars. Stuart noted that he printed only 120 copies of this book so it is extremely rare. Stuarts biographer John H. Giltner wrote that this book was the first American attempt to publish anything like a comprehensive exposition of the character and usage of the Hebrew language and a landmark in the history of American Hebrew studies. . 1813ref. 58749Andover: Flagg and Gould 1813. First edition 8vo pp.123 1; quarter calf over marbled boards manuscript paper label on spine; boards rubbed upper joint starting textblock clean and sound. One of the first books published at Andover Theological Seminary and for more than thirty years the standard among theological institutions. Paradise A history of printing in Andover. Prior to his joining Andover as professor of sacred literature Stuart had no acquaintance with Hebrew. He immediately began intensive study of the language and became one of the few native-born Americans to know enough to teach it. Lack of funding compelled Stuart to produce his own grammar for the benefit of his students which was first circulated in manuscript then printed in 1813 and expanded in 1821. He had to import Hebrew type and as local printers couldn't properly set it did much of the setting himself DAB. While other grammars of Hebrew had been printed in America as accompaniments to lexicographical works this is one of the earliest if not the first separately produced grammar of Hebrew in the States. Spine and board edges are rubbed; front board with a vertical crease from fold; a solidly bound copy with light to moderate foxing scattered throughout. Campbell 1779-1842 was a Petersburg VA bookstore owner and historian. He was father of Charles Campbell who was himself a history of colonial Virginia. Another edition of this present work with the same collation and pagination errors bears a Petersburg imprint. Howes's entry suggests that this Philadelphia imprint was first. In addition to Campbell's history the book also contains the "Constitution of Virginia" p. 226-237 and concludes with a "Sketch of the History of the Church in Virginia" attributed to Moses Hoge by the cataloguer at the American Antiquarian Society. An uncommon and early Virginia history all the more uncommon in publisher's binding. This copy with a previous owner name of Elihu B. Taft Burlington VT 1870 on the front pastedown; this above the 20th century bookplate of John W. Hancock. An appealing copy. Howes C-100; Shaw & Shoemaker 28070; Sabin 10259; Haynes 2834. J. W.
