réf. 37867Warsaw: NP n.d. Softcover. g. Octavo. 4 page folded pamphlet. Orange label with black text tipped on the cover titled "Objasnienie" Explanation. The publication offers an explanation of Genesis 49:1 in which Jacob offers his sons a prediction of the end. Basing himself on the 15th century biblical commentator Isaac Abarbanel R. Abraham Kupfersztoch's father took each letter from the verse and produced a prophecy about a world war in which the Russians English Serbians French Italians and Romanians fight against Germany and Turkey. Germany would invade and defeat Russia Poland would gain its independence and the Jews would return to Israel. This process was done in a similar fashion to modern day biblical interpretations known as the "Bible Code". This brand of apocalyptic prophecy was influenced by Abarbanel who read Daniel as predicting an apocalyptic war between Christians and Muslims. Kupfersztoch's prediction was made in 1905 and it appeared to be on its way to fulfillment with the beginning of World War I. His empathy for Polish nationalists is quite striking as it goes against the common view of Polish-Jewish relations as being uniformly negative. Text in Hebrew and Polish. Some marking in pen and underlying in crayon. Overall in good condition. Abraham Isaac Kupfersztoch aka Kupperstock Poland - 1940 Berlin the author was an eccentric Hassidic Rabbi originally from Warsaw. He aided Germany during World War I by providing secret plans of the layout of Russian defenses. His reasons for doing this were based both an personal animus he harbored towards the Russians for executing some of his students years earlier and also likely in connection with this prophecy. As a consequence of his actions during the war he was granted German citizenship. He lived in Berlin and operated a Yeshiva there up through the Nazi period. He was even given financial support from the government and amazingly was one of an extremely rare class of Jewish citizens to have actually been given protection from anti-Semitic actions and persecution during the period. An extraordinary story reports that his yeshiva was in fact guarded from violence during the infamous Kristallnacht by a squad of SS members. Upon his death of natural causes in 1940 his students were subsequently no longer shielded from the Holocaust and were sent to concentration camps. NP unknown books

His major work Theatrum Orbis Terrarum 1570 with later revisions and addenda was the first modern atlas. It was based on contemporary charts and maps and contained a collection of plates engraved by Franz Hagenberg in a uniform size and format. The Theatrum preceded the first Atlas of Ortelius' good friend Gerardus Mercator. In fact popular and sentimental legend has it that Mercator delayed publication of his own work so that his younger friend's would appear first. although this simply is not true Mercator wasn't ready the legendary cartographer did compliment Ortelius for the "care and elegance" he put into his "Theatrum. unknown books

Marginal pencil markings throughout including one notice of transposed lines on page 9. Overall good plus condition. A rare collection of letters by an anonymous author mostly sent to President Abraham Lincoln but also to Secretary of State William Seward Treasury Secretary Salmon Chase and other officials between October 25 1860 and February 19 1863. The author is a Unionist and a self-described "citizen" not a soldier though he has plenty to recommend to President Lincoln and others about how to prosecute the present war. He also refers to himself as "a cool observer outside the stifling atmosphere of Washington" though again he wastes no time in recommending actions and strategies for political and military improvements. The author was most certainly a political actor of some kind as he writes intimately and on friendly terms with Lincoln and others "You know my personal regard for you" to John J. Crittenden in early 1861. He writes long letters to his correspondents about a decidedly wide variety of issues including the future of slavery political intrigue the dissatisfaction of the public early in the war and more but mostly about troop levels troop movements officer appointments and other aspects and critiques of war strategy. A notable angle of the work is that the author's side of the correspondence and likely some of the return correspondence he mentions within the letters are possibly lost to history other than their presence here. The imprint reads simply "Printed Not Published" and does not include a place or date of publication. We have assumed the date of 1863 given the introductory note is dated March 8 1863. OCLC reports just six copies at Columbia the Huntington Library Harvard Brown the University of Chicago and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. Printed, Not Published unknown books

1860réf. 158491860. Lincoln Abraham. The Lincoln and Douglas Debates 1860 printed record of the seven public debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas during the 1858 Illinois Senate campaign a pivotal series of political confrontations over slavery and the future of the United States. The debates addressed the expansion of slavery into western territories and the constitutional implications of the Supreme Court's Dred Scott decision. Lincoln used the campaign to articulate a moral and political critique of slavery's expansion including the position he expressed in his earlier convention speech that "a house divided against itself cannot stand." Although Lincoln lost the Senate race to Douglas the debates established him as a leading national figure within the Republican Party and played a major role in shaping the political arguments that led to his presidential election in 1860. Lincoln Abraham. The Lincoln And Douglas Debates. A Political Debates between Hon. Abraham Lincoln and Hon. Stephen A. Douglas. In the Celebrated Campaign of 1858 in Illinois. Columbus: Follett Foster and Company 1860. First edition third issue identified by the numeral "2" on page 13 and the presence of the publisher's advertisement. Octavo volume containing 268 pages. Bound in publisher's original olive green textured cloth with blind stamped borders and spine lettered in gilt. The Lincoln Douglas debates represented one of the most influential series of political exchanges in nineteenth century American history addressing the central constitutional and moral questions surrounding slavery in the years immediately preceding the Civil War. Douglas defended the doctrine of popular sovereignty arguing that territories should decide the legality of slavery for themselves while Lincoln challenged the compatibility of that doctrine with the Dred Scott decision and emphasized the moral consequences of the institution. Although Douglas retained his Senate seat Lincoln's articulate presentation of the issues drew national attention and positioned him as a major political figure within the emerging Republican Party. Slight chipping to the head of the spine fading to boards and gilt minor damp staining with light foxing and toning consistent with age. Overall good condition. unknown books
1863réf. 175681863. Lincoln Abraham. African Troops Scarce U.S. Senate executive document transmitting a message from Abraham Lincoln and accompanying State Department correspondence concerning the French deployment of Black troops to Mexico during the American Civil War. Issued by the 37th Congress 3rd Session in February 1863 the report reflects the convergence of emancipation-era policy racialized military labor and international imperial strategy. U.S. Senate Executive Document No. 40 37th Congress 3rd Session; February 1863. Original printed pamphlet in standard folio format.Prepared under the direction of William H. Seward the document compiles diplomatic intelligence indicating that France transported African troops from Egypt-specifically from regions identified as "Dalfour" and Nubia-to reinforce forces stationed at Veracruz during the French Intervention in Mexico. The stated rationale as recorded in the report was that "the black race is not subject to the yellow fever" revealing the period's racialized medical assumptions and their direct application in imperial military logistics. Produced in the immediate aftermath of the Emancipation Proclamation this document is especially significant for situating Black military labor within a global context. While the Union was actively recruiting African American soldiers U.S. officials were simultaneously monitoring European powers deploying African troops across colonial networks. The report thus provides rare contemporary evidence of how race disease theory and military necessity intersected in both American and European wartime policy. This document holds strong research value across multiple fields: African American military history Civil War diplomacy transnational slavery and emancipation colonial medicine and 19th-century imperial warfare. It is particularly notable for documenting the perceived biological resilience of Black soldiers as a strategic asset-an idea central to both colonial and military history. The Register no friend of Abraham Lincoln was a Democratic Paper supporting the Crittenden Compromise. Reporting on State and National issues the Register notes "The Crittenden Resolutions have strong friends but the ultra republicans will not take them." Lincoln had insisted that his allies hold firm against Crittenden's Compromise. The Register rebukes Lincoln for his famous declaration that "the Union could not endure permanently part slave and part free." Developments in the fracturing Union are reported. Lincoln had been elected President nearly three months before the appearance of this issue. His inauguration would occur five weeks later. Paid advertisers include John McClernand and John Stuart who advertise their legal services in the first column of page 1. The large number and variety of advertisements for an array of medical complaints about four columns are surprising- - and a little disturbing. This issue also reports an incident involving the John Brownites at Boston who were snubbed by British Lord Brougham after inviting him to attend a convention discussing the abolition of slavery. Abraham Thornton a bricklayer was accused of the rape and murder of Mary Ashford when she was found dead the morning after a dance where the two had been seen together. Thornton admitted that the two had been consensually intimate but denied the charges of rape and murder. Eyewitness accounts backed up his story and in the absence of other evidence he was acquitted of both charges. Public outcry around his acquittal led to Mary's brother William invoking an "appeal of murder." This uncommon legal practice allowed a retrial of a defendant acquitted for murder but crucially gave the defendant the right to trial by battle. Thornton invoked that right and was released after William Ashford declined the challenge. The case resulted in the abolition of appeals by murder and thus the end of trial by battle. Despite his protestations of innocence the public was thoroughly convinced of his guilt. Unable to lead a normal life Thornton moved to the United States and settled in Baltimore Maryland.
