1689rif. 1512050020Amsterdam: Ex typographia P. & J. Blaeu protant apud A. Wolfgang Janssonio-Waesbergios Boom Somer & Goethals 1689-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good. Blind stamped contemporary vellum binding. Hand written title. Folio 40 cm. Title in red and black with printer's device. Engraved portrait of Louis Cappel. Collated: 24 979 11 pp. Printed in 2 columns. A few stray spots generally clean and unmarked internally. "Cappel gained imperishable fame by his two books 'Arcanum Punctationis Revelatum' published anonymously by Thomas Erpenius at Leyden in 1624 and 'Critica Sacra' printed at Paris in 1650. In the 'Arcanum' he proved conclusively that the Hebrew text was first pointed after the Christian era until which time it had been composed merely of consonants; in the 'Critica' he proved that not even the consonantal text had been transmitted without errors but needed emendation with the help of the versions and of conjecture. It is to the lasting credit of Cappel that he was the first who dared to undertake with exemplary clearness penetration and method a purely philologic and scientific treatment of the text of the Bible." Crawford Howell Toy Karl Heinrich Cornill; Jewish Encyclopedia 1906. Signature of Thomas J. Conant 1824. Conant was a noted American Biblical scholar. Gift inscription from Conant to the Newton Theological Seminary from 1827. This is an oversized or heavy book that requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US. After a bit the author addresses Lincoln's assassination: "Another tale will old men oft relate / Of how our Lincoln fell 'neath traitor hate; / How he we loved so much with so much pride / Struck by th' assassin's fatal bullet died. / Oh bitter tears fell on that April morn / As o'er our city the sad news was borne." Other battles and heroes are similarly mentioned as well as the mercy of nurses and the newly freed slaves: "O'er snowy cotton fields the people see / The noble spectacle of labor free. / . / And many a school-house open wide its door / To welcome thousands untaught before.". 1860rif. 85724Chicago: Charles Leib 1860. Very Good. Four-page newspaper. A couple of small holes various brown spots and other bits of minor wear A campaign newspaper for Abraham Lincoln in the Presidential Campaign of 1860. We note a half-column story on the front page of this issue that accuses Senator Douglas of being a Roman Catholic -- a charge based partly on the fact that Mrs. Douglas was a Catholic as were their children -- probably an effective charge in largely Protestant mid-19th century America. Our brief research suggests that Douglas was neither a Catholic nor a formal member of any other organized religious group. The purpose of another half-column story on the front page was to make it clear that Lincoln had publicly condemned the actions of John Brown and did not object to Brown's execution. Charles Leib the editor was a political operative with an unclear background who had previously edited a Democratic campaign newspaper on behalf of the Buchanan campaign in 1856. Leib served briefly as an Assistant Quartermaster in the Union Army before heading to New Mexico probably in 1863 and died there in 1865 at the age of 38. Charles Leib unknown
