His brother Michael enlisted in the 77th Pennsylvania regiment later in 1861 and served with that unit in the various campaigns of the Army of the Cumberland until killed in action on the first day at Chickamauga in September 1863._"The accounts of camp living the primitive practices of the army the methods of handling the distribution of rations the rumors of the immediate end of the war always erroneous and probably the result of wishful thinking on the part of the soldiers and the enlisted men's evaluations of the generals are all very interesting. But the most fascinating picture that emerges is that of two ordinary young men performing a duty that patriotism required of them in spite of the perils of battlefield and camp life while fighting the silent and lonely battle of homesickness which has always been the bane of soldiers" from Harry R. réf. 06714Paris: chez Bulla et chez Aumont 1830. Victor Adam's Masterpiece of the Bullring A Superb Hand-Colored Copy with an Autograph Presentation Inscription by the Artist ADAM Victor Jean Victor Adam. Combat du Taureau / Corrida de Toros Bull Fight. Douze sujets dessinés d'après nature par Victor Adam. Paris: chez Bulla et chez Aumont ca. 1830. First edition. Oblong folio 13 7/16 x 18 7/8 inches; 341 x 480 mm. Twelve superb hand-colored lithograph plates all heightened with gum arabic. Autograph presentation inscription in French signed by Victor Adam mounted on the verso of the front blank. Plate III with a neat one-inch repair to the lower blank margin; a few occasional minor marginal marks. The colors exceptionally bright and fresh throughout. Three-quarter dark blue morocco over marbled boards. Front cover with large rectangular dark blue morocco label bordered and lettered in gilt. Spine with five raised bands ruled in gilt and lettered in gilt compartments. A magnificent example of one of the masterpieces of French Romantic lithography further enhanced by a presentation inscription from the artist himself. Jean Victor Adam was among the most celebrated French lithographers of the nineteenth century. Trained under Regnault and Meynier he achieved success at an early age and went on to become one of the most prolific and accomplished printmakers of the Romantic era. Although he worked in a wide variety of genres - including military subjects equestrian scenes genre studies and book illustration - his most desirable color-plate works are generally those produced during the height of his lithographic career in the 1830s and 1840s. Combat du Taureau occupies an important place in the visual history of the corrida. Drawn "d'après nature" the series follows the spectacle of the bullfight through its successive stages from the ceremonial entrance into the arena to the final estocade. Adam combines remarkable powers of observation with a dramatic sense of movement and composition producing a sequence that captures both the pageantry and violence of the event. Particular attention is paid throughout to the anatomy and movement of the bull lending the series an unusual degree of vitality and authenticity. Particularly desirable is the present copy's rich contemporary hand-coloring heightened with gum arabic which imparts exceptional brilliance and depth to the plates. Copies colored in this manner are among the most attractive manifestations of Adam's work and vividly convey the color spectacle and theatricality of the bullring. The volume is further distinguished by an autograph presentation inscription in French signed by Adam and mounted on the verso of the front blank. A remarkably scarce suite. We have located only one imperfect example lacking half the plates in the dispersal of the library at Howth Castle in 2021. The work is recorded by Palau Manual del Librero Hispano-Americano 2598 an appropriate inclusion given its Spanish subject matter and bilingual captions and appears today to survive primarily in a small number of institutional and private collections. An example is preserved in the library of the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Ronda one of the foremost repositories of bullfighting literature and iconography. Bénézit notes that Adam's finest lithographic work belongs to the period before his production became increasingly commercial after 1848. Combat du Taureau belongs squarely to this earlier and more desirable phase and is today recognized as one of the artist's most important and visually impressive color-plate publications. One of the finest pictorial representations of the bullfight produced during the Romantic era and a cornerstone work in any serious collection of taurine literature sporting art or nineteenth-century French lithography. Jean Victor Adam 1801-1866 was a French painter and lithographer. Born in Paris he was the son of Jean Adam an esteemed engraver. During the years 1814 to 1818 he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and also in the ateliers of Meynier and Régnault. In 1819 he exhibited 'Herminia succouring Tancred.' He was almost immediately afterwards employed to paint various subjects for the Museum at Versailles amongst which are 'The Entry of the French into Mainz' 'The Battle of Varroux' 'The Taking of Menin 'The Battle of Castiglione' 'The Passage of the Cluse' 'The Battle of Montebello' 'The Capitulation of Meiningen;' the last three in association with Alaux. He also exhibited down to the year 1838: 'Henry IV. after the Battle of Coutras' 'Trait of Kindness in the Duke de Berri' 'The Postillion' 'The Vivandiere' 'The Road to Poissy' 'The Return from the Chase' 'Horse-fair at Caen' and numerous other subjects. He then retired from publicity till 1846 when he appeared as the exhibitor of some works in lithography to which branch of art he afterwards restricted himself. In this line he produced a lithographic album 'Views in the Environs of Paris' 'Studies of Animals for an edition of Buffon' &c. He obtained a gold medal in 1824 a second class medal in 1836 besides several others from Lille Douai and other cities. He died at Viroflay in 1866. "Beraldi assigns between 7000 and 8000 designs to Victor Adam 1801-1865.A Parisian by birth he remained in the capital all his life but this did not prevent him from drawing negroes Turks Chinese and other peoples all over the world in his Paris studio. He was famous indeed as a faiseur de bonshommes that is to say a specialist in adding groups of small figures to the foreground of architectural or landscape drawings by other artists. His immense production contains many amusing albums concerning the life of the time" Ray The Art of the French Illustrated Book p. 194. Sainte-Pélagie was a debtor's prison in Paris in active use from 1790 to 1899. The former Parisian prison was located between the current group of buildings bearing No. 56 Rue de la Clef with Rue du Puits-de-l'Ermite in the 5th arrondissement of Paris at the old Place Sainte-Pélagie. The penal structure held many noted prisoners during the French Revolution with Madame Roland Grace Dalrymple Elliott and Marie-Louise O'Murphy being among the known prisoners. After the revolution the Marquis de Sade was imprisoned here as was the young mathematician Évariste Galois. During the July Monarchy the "April insurgees" were also detained there and some managed to escape through a tunnel. The painter Gustave Courbet was also imprisoned there for his activities in the Paris Commune. Bobins V 1524. Paris [&] London: V. Morlet [&] McLean, 1830 unknown books

Contemporary quarter dark-green scored calf over green paper boards. Smooth spine ruled in gilt tan morocco label lettered in gilt board edges worn. With the bookplate of celebrated collector Bernard Franck on front free endpaper. An excellent example of a very rare suite of hand-colored lithographs by Victor Adam. Victor Adam 1801-1865 is better known for his later works of pictorial journalism or for his many lithographs of military history than for his early works of fashion and society life. "His immense production contains many amusing albums concerning the life of the time such as Un an dans la vie de jeune homme. This series is a sort of bourgeois rake's progress. A young man from the country comes to Paris to sample its pleasures. He acquires a new wardrobe; buys a horse; is duped by gamblers makes a conquest of a pretty lady; exclaims 'Jasmin! she seemed so artless' as he lies recovering from the resulting malady; is imprisoned for debt; writes at last to 'the old one' a buxom woman of means; and is accepted by her in the final plate. The series is unusual among the albums of the time in that it tells a consecutive story and it certainly has more spirit and finish than Adam's usual work" Ray. A lovely copy of the first book by this gifted painter and illustrator. Very scarce. Bernard Franck 1849-1924 Born in Paris Franck was a veteran of the 1870 Franco-Prussian War during which he was awarded the Medaille Militaire. He was an industrialist specializing in the manufacturing of military equipment. His success in business enabled him to become an inveterate collector. He amassed his vast collection over 45 years from 1875 to 1920. The collection consisted of 18th Century and early 19th Century objects - miniature portraits many emphasizing military subjects medals and decorations armory uniforms paintings engravings a variety of bibelots. Besides the miniature portraits especially noteworthy was Franck's collection of Carnets de Bal dance cards. He sold this collection to J.P. Morgan around 1910. Before doing so he had the collection reproduced in an album entitled "Collection de 124 carnets de bal du XVIIIe siecle/formee par M.Bernard Franck a Paris de l'annee 1875 au 23 avril 1902". Only 20 albums were produced of which one is in the Watson Library of the Metropolitan Museum and one in the Morgan Library autographed by Franck to Morgan. Franck died in 1924.
