Jean Victor Adam 1801-1866 was a French painter and lithographer. Born in Paris he was the son of Jean Adam an esteemed engraver. During the years 1814 to 1818 he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and also in the ateliers of Meynier and Régnault. In 1819 he exhibited 'Herminia succouring Tancred.' He was almost immediately afterwards employed to paint various subjects for the Museum at Versailles amongst which are 'The Entry of the French into Mainz' 'The Battle of Varroux' 'The Taking of Menin 'The Battle of Castiglione' 'The Passage of the Cluse' 'The Battle of Montebello' 'The Capitulation of Meiningen;' the last three in association with Alaux. He also exhibited down to the year 1838: 'Henry IV. after the Battle of Coutras' 'Trait of Kindness in the Duke de Berri' 'The Postillion' 'The Vivandiere' 'The Road to Poissy' 'The Return from the Chase' 'Horse-fair at Caen' and numerous other subjects. He then retired from publicity till 1846 when he appeared as the exhibitor of some works in lithography to which branch of art he afterwards restricted himself. In this line he produced a lithographic album 'Views in the Environs of Paris' 'Studies of Animals for an edition of Buffon' &c. He obtained a gold medal in 1824 a second class medal in 1836 besides several others from Lille Douai and other cities. He died at Viroflay in 1866. "Beraldi assigns between 7000 and 8000 designs to Victor Adam 1801-1865.A Parisian by birth he remained in the capital all his life but this did not prevent him from drawing negroes Turks Chinese and other peoples all over the world in his Paris studio. He was famous indeed as a faiseur de bonshommes that is to say a specialist in adding groups of small figures to the foreground of architectural or landscape drawings by other artists. His immense production contains many amusing albums concerning the life of the time" Ray The Art of the French Illustrated Book p. 194. Sainte-Pélagie was a debtor's prison in Paris in active use from 1790 to 1899. The former Parisian prison was located between the current group of buildings bearing No. 56 Rue de la Clef with Rue du Puits-de-l'Ermite in the 5th arrondissement of Paris at the old Place Sainte-Pélagie. The penal structure held many noted prisoners during the French Revolution with Madame Roland Grace Dalrymple Elliott and Marie-Louise O'Murphy being among the known prisoners. After the revolution the Marquis de Sade was imprisoned here as was the young mathematician Évariste Galois. During the July Monarchy the "April insurgees" were also detained there and some managed to escape through a tunnel. The painter Gustave Courbet was also imprisoned there for his activities in the Paris Commune. Bobins V 1524. Paris [&] London: V. Morlet [&] McLean, 1830 unknown books

Victor Adam 1801-1865 is better known for his later works of pictorial journalism or for his many lithographs of military history than for his early works of fashion and society life. "His immense production contains many amusing albums concerning the life of the time such as Un an dans la vie de jeune homme. This series is a sort of bourgeois rake's progress. A young man from the country comes to Paris to sample its pleasures. He acquires a new wardrobe; buys a horse; is duped by gamblers makes a conquest of a pretty lady; exclaims 'Jasmin! she seemed so artless' as he lies recovering from the resulting malady; is imprisoned for debt; writes at last to 'the old one' a buxom woman of means; and is accepted by her in the final plate. The series is unusual among the albums of the time in that it tells a consecutive story and it certainly has more spirit and finish than Adam's usual work" Ray. Before doing so he had the collection reproduced in an album entitled "Collection de 124 carnets de bal du XVIIIe siecle/formee par M.Bernard Franck a Paris de l'annee 1875 au 23 avril 1902". Only 20 albums were produced of which one is in the Watson Library of the Metropolitan Museum and one in the Morgan Library autographed by Franck to Morgan. Franck died in 1924. "A retrospective exhibition of engravings and "lithographes d'attelage" was held in 1900 exhibiting ancient coaches and included many of Adam's lithographs and engravings both in black and white and in colour." Menassier. Jean-Victor Adam 1801-1867 was a French painter and lithographer. The Plates: 1. Courses. 2. Landau. 3. Coucous. 4. réf. 04374Paris: Maison Martinet - Hautecoeur Frères 1860. The Animals of the Jardin des Plantes With Twenty-Four Superb Hand-Colored Lithographed Plates An Exceptionally Rare French Juvenile Natural History ADAM Albert illustrator. ROSTAING Jules. First edition. Large oblong quarto 10 3/16 x 13 1/2 inches; 259 x 343 mm. iv 30 1 table 1 blank pp. With twenty-four superb hand-colored lithographed plates by Albert Adam many containing multiple images and heightened with gum arabic. Some light foxing to the text leaves only; the plates exceptionally bright and clean. Publisher's black pebble-grain cloth front cover elaborately pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt with a central wreath enclosing the title and surrounded by vignettes of animals and their habitats; lower cover with central decoration stamped in blind; yellow coated endpapers. Front inner hinge expertly and almost invisibly repaired. Neat early ink inscription on front fly-leaf dated 1860. An excellent copy. A wonderfully evocative pictorial tour of the celebrated Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes in Paris presenting its exotic inhabitants in a series of richly hand-colored lithographs. Rather than illustrating the animals simply as isolated zoological specimens Adam frequently places them within their enclosures and surroundings sometimes accompanied by their keepers and elegantly dressed visitors giving the book considerable interest as a visual record of the nineteenth-century zoological garden. The twenty-four plates encompass an extraordinary range of animal life including bison deer moose antelope llamas goats giraffes buffalo elephants hippopotamuses rhinoceroses camels zebras donkeys lions tigers leopards jackals wolves hyenas orangutans monkeys dogs birds of prey crocodiles snakes gazelles and numerous other mammals and birds. Among the most striking compositions is the giraffe plate in which three giraffes occupy their enclosure while fashionably dressed visitors observe them with smaller animal studies arranged around the principal scene. Another spectacular plate gathers lions tigers and other great cats around their barred enclosure supplemented by charming subsidiary scenes of visitors and keepers. The elephant plate similarly combines its monumental central animals with smaller studies of hippopotamuses and other pachyderms. The deer and moose plate demonstrates particularly well Adam's attractive combination of zoological observation with picturesque landscape. The application of gum arabic over the hand-coloring gives portions of the animals foliage and costumes a luminous almost enameled appearance characteristic of the finest French juvenile color-plate books of the period. Albert Adam 1833-1900 was the son of the celebrated French painter lithographer and caricaturist Jean-Victor Adam 1801-1867 with whom he worked and whom he assisted with lithographic commissions. In Le Jardin des Plantes en Estampes the younger Adam combines accomplished lithographic draughtsmanship with an engaging sense of narrative: animals keepers and spectators together create miniature scenes of life at the Paris menagerie rather than merely conventional zoological portraits. The accompanying text by Jules Rostaing provides descriptions and histories of the animals represented transforming Adam's spectacular series of plates into an educational introduction to the inhabitants of one of Europe's most celebrated zoological collections. Exceptionally rare. OCLC records just one copy at the Morgan Library & Museum New York - the copy formerly in the collection of Gordon N. Ray. The work is apparently unknown to Denise's bibliography of the Jardin des Plantes. A particularly desirable example of nineteenth-century French juvenile natural history combining twenty-four exceptionally attractive hand-colored lithographs contemporary zoological observation scenes of Parisian social life and a handsome pictorial gilt publisher's binding. 1764réf. 1721551764. ADAM Robert. Ruins of the Palace of the Emperor Diocletian at Spalatro in Dalmatia. vi 8 33 1 pp. with 61 engraved plates on 54 sheets some double-page. Folio 525 x 370 mm. bound in full contemporary calf. London: For the author 1764. First edition. "The book incorporated the first encyclical of Britain's most popular architect of the day who had now been in practice for several years with an immense patronage. Adam makes it quite plain that the great palace of Diocletian forms the source of his ideas upon domestic building and he modestly claims that it is the first private dwelling-house of the Romans to have been illustrated and described." Adam's account was based on his five-week visit to Spalatro in Croatia now known as Split; the sixty-one superb plates were executed after Clerisseau Zucchi and others some of the drawings survive at the Hermitage St. Petersburg. In his introduction Adam expresses his conviction that Diocletian had revived a taste in Architecture superior to that of his own times. Adam's "observance on unusual detail throughout is remarkable. Nothing is too minute to escape his notice. A careful reading of the descriptions shows whence Robert Adam derived his theories for the planning of his domestic buildings on a monumental scale like Syon and Kedleston" James Lees-Milne The Age of Adam pp. 67-69.
