Now in Like Men of War he focuses on African-American soldiers in the Union army. In all more than 175000 black soldiers taught in more than 400 battles. But once the war was won their efforts were largely ignored or forgotten. Drawing from the diaries and letters of these veterans Trudeau vividly re-creates their experiences. At the outset the white military believed that blacks were simply incapable of combat duty. But as in the courageous assault on Fort Wagner depicted in the film Glory African Americans more than proved their mettle. Thoroughly researched and copiously illustrated Like Men of War illuminates the struggles of these courageous men and brings a fresh perspective to our understanding of the Civil War. A Pulitzer-nominated author and one of the great public intellectuals of Slavic culture bring to life the unfamiliar myths and legends of the Slavic world. In the first collection of Slavic myths for an international readership Noah Charney and Svetlana Slapšak expertly weave together the ancient stories with nuanced analysis to illuminate their place at the heart of Slavic tradition. While Slavic cultures are far-ranging comprised of East Slavs Russia Ukraine Belarus West Slavs the Czech Republic Slovakia Poland and South Slavs the countries of former Yugoslavia plus Bulgaria they are connected by tales of adventure and magic with roots in a common lore. In the world of Slavic mythology we find petulant deities demons and fairies witches and a supreme god who can hurl thunderbolts. Gods gather under the World Tree reminiscent of Norse mythology’s Yggdrasill. The vampire―usually the only Serbo-Croatian word in any foreign-language dictionary―and the werewolf both emerge from Slavic belief. In their careful analysis and sensitive reconstructions of the myths Charney and Slapšak unearth the Slavic beliefs before their distortion first by Christian chroniclers and then by nineteenth-century scholars seeking origin stories for their newborn nation states. They reveal links not only to the neighboring pantheons of Greece Rome Egypt and Scandinavia but also the belief systems of indigenous peoples of Australia the Americas Africa and Asia. Specially commissioned illustrations inspired by traditional Eastern and European folk art bring the stories and their cultural landscape to life. Thames & Hudson hardcover books

Binding tight and square pages clean bright and unmarked. 2013 Hard Cover. x 210 pp. An examination of medieval historian writings through the prism of violence. The concept of medieval historiography as "usable past" is here challenged and reassessed. The contributors' shared claim is that the value of medieval historiographical texts lies not only in the factual information the texts contain but also in the methods and styles they use to represent and interpret the past and make it ideologically productive. Violence is used as the key term that best demonstrates the making of historical meaning in the Middle Ages through the transformation of acts of physical aggression and destruction into a memorable and usable past. The twelve chapters assembled here explore a wide range of texts emanating from throughout the francophone world. They cover a range of genres chansons de geste histories chronicles travel writing and lyric poetry and range from the late eleventh to the fifteenth century. Through examination of topics as varied as rhetoric imagery humor gender sexuality trauma subversion and community formation each chapter strives to demonstrate how knowledge of the medieval past can be enhanced by approaching medieval modes of historical representation and consciousness on their own terms and by acknowledging - and resisting - the desire to subject them to modern conceptions of historical intelligibility.
