Most Americans would be shocked and disturbed to learn that the harsh rhetoric of virulent anti-Semitism is alive and thriving in Israel. Israel is a Jewish state after all so the anti-Semitism found there could hardly be aimed at all Jews. In fact the Israeli brand of anti-Semitism pits secular Jews against fundamentalist Jews the ones in traditional clothing following exacting religious rules. Writing from his unique vantage as a Tel Aviv resident Noah Efron examines the discomfiture and spleen that some secular Jews feel when confronted with their ultra-Orthodox brethren. He recounts the difficult history of the ultra-Orthodox in Europe and Palestine and examines their role in Israel a country obsessed with and conflicted about what it means to be a Jew. Despite political economic cultural and religious reasons for the tension between the two groups little can explain the ferocity with which the Orthodox are loathed today or the shocking rhetoric that many secular Jews use to denounce and ridicule them. This chilling and disturbing book documents the terrible details of an animosity based partly on fact and partly on a fantasy that threatens the future of Israel. -- with a bonus offer--; 520-Efron; Efron Noah J. We do not attempt to authoritatively engage these concerns here nor do we wish to insinuate that elevated interest in America s cultural affairs is somehow unique to our present historical moment. We do however think that this sampling of discourse by and about a country s visual artists leads to insights about its politics and society not gained elsewhere. At the very least it gives a sense of what it is like to live in the United States today and results in some inspired debate. We hope that this book serves not only as a valuable compendium of recent writing about contemporary art but also as inspiration to seek further understanding of these Uncertain States. So Noah Horowitz and Brian Sholis note in the introduction to this unique compilation of writing around art and cultural politics in America since 2000. This book studies the various and even opposing ways in which Geddes has been interpreted up to this day providing a new reading of his life writing and plans. Geddes' scrutiny is presented as a case study for Town Planning as a whole. Tying together for the first time key concepts in cultural geography and colonial urbanism the book proposes a more vigorous historiography exposing hidden narratives and past agendas still dominating the disciplinary discourse. Written by a cultural geographer and a town planner this book offers a rounded full-length analysis of Geddes' vision and its material manifestation functioning also as a much needed critical tool to evaluate Modern Town Planning as an academic and practical discipline. The book also includes a long overdue model of his urban theory. . 2011. 0415578663 . Routledge hardcover

A new breed of hyper-sceptics now challenges whether we even have the perceptual experience we think we have. According to these writers perceptual consciousness is a kind of false consciousness. This view grows out of the discovery of such phenomena as change blindness and inattentional blindness which show that we can all be quite blind to changes taking place before our very eyes. Such radical scepticism has acute and widespread implications for the study of perception and consciousness. The writings collected in this volume explore these implications. The contributors are scientists and philosophers at the forefront of this research and include well-known authors such as psychologists Susan Blackmore and Arien Mack and philosophers Andy Clark and Daniel Dennett. They have an gift for bringing these paradoxical issues to life and sharing their excitement with the non-specialist. -- REVIEWS: "This is a most impressive selection of essays on a central topic in cognitive science. Every essay has valuable points to make . . . This book is essential reading for any theorist interested in perception." -Paul Coates Human Nature Review -- "Many contributions to consciousness debates have been ill informed or over subjective. This volume does not suffer from these deficiencies. The common thread of change blindness ensures that all contributions are grounded in at least one empirically robust effect. The is no doubt that this grounding advances the quality of debate about the nature of visual experience." -- Richard Cooper THES "Noë's book is a well-balanced set of essays. 1790ref. 56704Boston: I. Thomas and E.T. Andrews 1790. William Safire's Copy Noted grammarian and pundit William Safire's copy of the first collection of Noah Webster's writings demonstrating the broad reach of the pioneering lexicographer's genius. Webster's essays touch a variety of topics from the new constitution to the practical reasons why marriage between cousins is discouraged. Of particular note is the presence of many words that are spelled phonetically such as "Guvernment" "Skools" and "Karacter." This editorial decision was in keeping with Webster's growing desire to simplify language and qualify it in American as opposed to British ways by dispensing with unnecessary vowels and misleading consonant pairings such as "ch" for "k". The language experiments played out here demonstrate an important step in Webster's development as lexicographer which would culminate in the publication of Webster's famous dictionary nearly forty years later in 1828. A charming Webster item with a notable linguistics-related provenance having been owned by William Safire the preeminent popular language and grammar expert of the 20th century. Safire was an author journalist and speechwriter who wrote the long-running column "On Language" for the NEW YORK TIMES. Webster's groundbreaking dictionary was originally published in New York in 1828 in a slightly larger format. Laid in is the Preface to the Revised Edition of 1847. PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN 291: "Webster was an ardent nationalist and he wanted to stress the political separation from Britain by the cultivation of a separate American language. Under the influence of his friend Benjamin Franklin he turned his attention to 'a reformed mode of spelling' and although he rejected the radical phonetic innovations proposed by Franklin he went far enough to give many printed American words a distinctive appearance." The Emily Skeel-William Safire Copy of Webster's LETTERS TO A YOUNG GENTLEMAN The Skeel-Safire copy of the first edition of this unusual Webster publication. In a series of nine letters to an unknown and likely universal correspondent Webster discusses the usual array of issues surrounding grammar and parts of speech as well as virtue and other moral ideals and also comments on the English language dictionaries of his day such as those compiled by Johnson Sheridan and Kenrick. Following the letters is a "Summary History of the discovery and settlement of America from the time of English settlement through the American Revolution" "adapted to the use of families and schools.a convenient Manuel sic for travellers and seamen." In subsequent years Webster's American history would be expanded and reissued but this is its first appearance. Safire was an author journalist and speechwriter who wrote the long-running column "On Language" for the New York Times.
