Spine with five raised bands tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments marbled endpapers. An excellent example with ten of the wonderful hand colored lithographs by Honoré Daumier. "The house of Aubert was ingenious in marketing its products. Its lithographs.were published one by one in periodicals like Le charivari and together in suites by the same artist without letterpress. Still a third form of publication was in albums made up of lithographs by several artists with accompanying texts. These collections most commonly took the form of volumes with the generic title Paris Comique which consisted of twenty colored lithographs accompanied by quite unrelated texts. Aubert remarked that the resulting hodgepodge had 'a plan that is easy to follow for it consists in not having any' and in fact this was indeed a frugal procedure for reusing old texts and already published plates. The interest of the various volumes of Paris comique resides entirely in the lithographs they happen to contain. It can be considerable however since Daumier and Gavarni are the predominant artists" Ray The Art of the French Illustrated Book 164. The Plates: 1. DAUMIER. La Tragédie. He graduated from Yale College in 1831 and was employed as a Congregational minister in Connecticut and Massachusetts 1836 to 1846. He was elected professor of moral philosophy and metaphysics at Yale in 1846 and from 1871 to 1886 he was president of the college. He edited several editions of Webster's Dictionary and wrote on education. Influenced by the German refugee writer and philosopher Francis Leiber Porter opposed slavery and integrated an antislavery position with religious liberalism. He was a frequent visitor to the Adirondack Mountains of New York and in 1875 was among the first recorded to make an ascent of the peak later named Porter Mountain in his honor. Noah Porter was the older brother of Sarah Porter founder of Miss Porter's School a prestigious college preparatory school for girls. His best-known work is The Human Intellect with an Introduction upon Psychology and the Human Soul 1868 comprehending a general history of philosophy and following in part the "common-sense" philosophy of the Scottish school while accepting the Kantian doctrine of intuition and declaring the notion of design to be a priori. He died in New Haven. unknown books

Large 8vo 10-1/2 x 6 7/8 inches; 269 x 174 mm. A fine copy of the rare octavo edition of Webster's unabridged dictionary the last that Webster published before his death in 1843. This is the textually best edition published in Webster's lifetime incorporating his final revisions some 5000 new definitions and a preface and introduction "on the origin history and connection of the languages of western Asia and Europe with an explanation of the principles on which languages are formed." Skeel notes that 3000 copies of this edition were printed fewer than the 5 or 6 thousand that Webster wanted but more than the 2500 of the 1828 first edition. A prospectus Skeel 585 advertised the edition at $13 sheep and $14 calf gilt. The work was in the press for over a year; a note in Webster's hand on a copy in the Connecticut State Library states "First signature of this edition impressed Oct. 22 1839. Last sheet impressed January 30 1841 15 months & days." The edition sold slowly with nearly half of the run still in sheets at the time of Webster's death. New. $39.95 Remembered today as a lexicographer Webster 1758-1843 was equally active as a political writer. As is the case with his dictionary and grammar textbooks his political essays are strongly patriotic and embody a confidence that the United States would soon become a great nation. He composed Sketches of American Policy at a time when the nationally minded segments of the political class were beginning to pursue plans to create a strong federal government to replace the Confederation Congress. Seeing this as a necessary step to ensure the nation's progress Webster endorsed this cause and wrote this pamphlet to promote it. During his tours throughout the states he presented to several people who would become delegates to the Constitutional Convention including George Washington James Madison and Benjamin Franklin. It circulated widely among the delegates and was an important influence in their debates. Interesting for this reason it is also valuable as a contemporary critique of the Articles of Confederation by a gifted scholar who associated with the leading statesmen of the day. unknown books
