1790réf. 56704Boston: I. Thomas and E.T. Andrews 1790. William Safire's Copy Noted grammarian and pundit William Safire's copy of the first collection of Noah Webster's writings demonstrating the broad reach of the pioneering lexicographer's genius. Webster's essays touch a variety of topics from the new constitution to the practical reasons why marriage between cousins is discouraged. Of particular note is the presence of many words that are spelled phonetically such as "Guvernment" "Skools" and "Karacter." This editorial decision was in keeping with Webster's growing desire to simplify language and qualify it in American as opposed to British ways by dispensing with unnecessary vowels and misleading consonant pairings such as "ch" for "k". The language experiments played out here demonstrate an important step in Webster's development as lexicographer which would culminate in the publication of Webster's famous dictionary nearly forty years later in 1828. A charming Webster item with a notable linguistics-related provenance having been owned by William Safire the preeminent popular language and grammar expert of the 20th century. Safire was an author journalist and speechwriter who wrote the long-running column "On Language" for the NEW YORK TIMES. An attractive copy by the foundational American language expert owned by the most notable public expert on language in 20th-century America. xvi414pp. Modern half calf and marbled boards with early calf corners laid down on the outer corners spine gilt leather label. Leather bookplate of William Safire on front pastedown with a handful of marginal pencil notations in the text likely in his hand. Mild offsetting on titlepage minor toning. Overall very good. The Emily Skeel-William Safire Copy of Webster's LETTERS TO A YOUNG GENTLEMAN The Skeel-Safire copy of the first edition of this unusual Webster publication. In a series of nine letters to an unknown and likely universal correspondent Webster discusses the usual array of issues surrounding grammar and parts of speech as well as virtue and other moral ideals and also comments on the English language dictionaries of his day such as those compiled by Johnson Sheridan and Kenrick. Following the letters is a "Summary History of the discovery and settlement of America from the time of English settlement through the American Revolution" "adapted to the use of families and schools.a convenient Manuel sic for travellers and seamen." In subsequent years Webster's American history would be expanded and reissued but this is its first appearance. A esoteric Webster item with notable etymology-related provenance having been owned by both Emily Ellsworth Ford Skeel Webster's granddaughter and bibliographer and William Safire the preeminent popular American language and grammar expert of the late 20th century. Skeel compiled A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE WRITINGS OF NOAH WEBSTER and published the work in 1958; books from her library are scarce. Safire was an author journalist and speechwriter who wrote the long-running column "On Language" for the New York Times. 1825réf. 57132Hartford: Printed for H. Hudson by W. Hudson and L. Skinner 1825. 1825 Edition of Webster's Immensely Popular Speller with Contemporary Ownership Inscription The 1825 edition of Noah Webster's monumentally important and phenomenally popular American speller originally issued in 1783. The American Spelling Book was Webster's most popular work and went through scores of editions in his lifetime the income from which enabled him to dedicate his efforts to his famous dictionary. The impact of this work should not be underestimated as it became the most common way in which Americans came to learn and understand their own language. The inscription likely that of the original owner and user on the front free endpaper of this copy reads: "Nancy Smith's Book East Haven Jan 24 1826." A well-used but sturdier than usual copy of this book which is often found in tatters. 12mo. Contemporary half calf and paper-covered boards. Paper stained and peeling from boards front board chipped at corners spine rubbed and splitting at head. Interior lightly tanned and foxed stain to lower right corner through the last two dozen pages. Contemporary ownership inscription on front free endpaper see below. A good sound copy overall.
