1742Best.-Nr. 89655London: J. Roberts 1742. Presumed First Edition First printing. Wraps. Fair. 80 pages. Some page foxing noted. Some moisture staining around edges at early pages. John Hervey 2nd Baron Hervey PC 13 October 1696 – 5 August 1743 was an English courtier and political writer. Heir to the Earl of Bristol he obtained the key patronage of Walpole and was involved in many court intrigues and literary quarrels being apparently caricatured by Pope and Fielding. His memoirs of the early reign of George II were too revealing to be published in his time and did not appear for more than a century. In 1725 he was elected M.P. for Bury St Edmunds. Hervey had been hesitating between William Pulteney afterwards earl of Bath and Robert Walpole but in 1730 he definitely took sides with Walpole of whom he was thenceforward a faithful adherent. He was able to render valuable service to Walpole from his influence with the Queen. Through him the minister governed Queen Caroline and indirectly George II. Hervey was vice-chamberlain in the royal household and a member of the Privy Council. In 1733 he was called to the House of Lords by writ of acceleration in his father's Barony. After the fall of Sir Robert Walpole he was dismissed July 1742 from his office. An excellent political pamphlet Miscellaneous Thoughts on the present Posture of Foreign and Domestic Affairs shows that he still retained his mental vigor. He predeceased his father but three of his sons became successively Earls of Bristol. Miscellaneous thoughts on the present posture both of our foreign and domestic affairs: humbly offer'd to the consideration of the Parliament and the people. Author: John Hervey. Sabin Americana Description: Based on Joseph Sabin's famed bibliography Bibliotheca Americana Sabin Americana 1500--1926 contains a collection of books pamphlets serials and other works about the Americas from the time of their discovery to the early 1900s. Limited and Numbered First Edition. #619/1000 copies printed " for presentation to friends of the author and the publishers". SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on verso of front wrapper "Autograph for Eugene L. Delafield Esq. by Hervey Allen". Delafield was a noted New York book collector 1907-2001 the bulk of whose collection now resides in the Yale Collection of American Literature at the Beinecke Library. Laid in is a 1 page letter signed with the initials "H.A." that reads- "One of the few remaining copies of my first book- newspaper reviews with the exception of the "Weakling" which was printed in El Paso and sold to the troops along the Mexican Border in 1916. As you remember I told you I destroyed perhaps foolishly a few copies that remained in my possession and have been able to get ahold of only one or two since then that turned up in an old trunk. I am not anxious to have this book known as it contains verse written when I was very immature." On the back of this letter in a different hand presumably Delafield's is "written circa 1925". Indeed very few copies of Allen's 1st book survive today and after a promising start as a poet Allen turned to fiction and became best known for his novel "Anthony Adverse" which became a huge best-seller and was made into a memorable movie winning 4 Oscars. 1876Best.-Nr. 250511876 UTAH Exploration 1ed Simpson HUGE Railroad Maps PAIUTE INDIANS California James Hervey Simpson was a 19th-century American explorer and engineer who was an important catalyst in the topographical discoveries of the American west. His railroad surveys helped establish northern routes in the Dakotas Utah Montana Idaho and Washington all of which helped produce some of the most detailed maps of these territories. These maps and subsequent railroad distance charts contributed to more people traveling and exploring western states and territories like Utah. According to Howes on Simpson's exploration route: "This route explored in 1859 shortened the distance to California by 250 miles; it was adopted by the overland mail pony express and telegraph. The report was submitted in 1861 but publication had to be deferred because of the Civil War. Portions however appeared in the author's 'The Shortest Route to California'." His "Report of Explorations Across the Great Basin of the Territory of Utah" included these maps and charts but also included a memoir of the Native Indian Tribes in the Utah Territory including descriptions of the Paiutes Shoshones and Goshutes.
