1966Fine French Original decorative imitation full leather bdg. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14cm). In French. [Lxv], 632, [7] p. Le Coran. Traduction intégrale et notes de Muhammad Hamidullah. Préface de Louis Massignon. Avec la collaboration de Michel Leturmy. Hamidllah, (1908-2002), D. Phil., D. Litt., HI, was a Muhaddith, Faqih, scholar of Islamic law and an academic author with over 250 books. A prolific writer, his extensive works on Islamic science, history and culture have been published in several languages and many thousands of articles in learned journals. His scholarship is regarded by many as unparalleled in the last century. A double doctorate (D.Phil. and D.Litt.) and a polymath, he was fluent in 22 languages including Urdu (his mother tongue), Persian, Arabic, French, English, German, Italian, Greek, Turkish, Russian etc. He learned Thai at the age of 84. Hamidullah is known for contributions to the research of Hadith history, translations of the Qur'an into multiple languages and in particular into French (first by a Muslim scholar) and for the monumental biography of the Islamic prophet Muhammad in French. He is also famous for discovering a missing work on the Prophet Muhammad regarded as one of his great contributions to the Hadith literature. The earliest Hadith manuscript still extant today, Sahifa Hammam bin Munabbah, was discovered in a Damascus library. Hammam bin Munabbah being a disciple of Sayyidina Abu Huraira, one of the Sahaba. Massignon, (1883-1962), was a Catholic scholar of Islam and a pioneer of Catholic-Muslim mutual understanding (Krokus 2012, p. 525). He was an influential figure in the twentieth century with regard to the Catholic church's relationship with Islam. He focused increasingly on the work of Mahatma Gandhi, whom he considered a saint. He also played a role in Islam being accepted as an Abrahamic Faith among Catholics. Some scholars maintain that his research, esteem for Islam and Muslims, and cultivation of key students in Islamic studies largely prepared the way for the positive vision of Islam articulated in the Lumen gentium and the Nostra aetate at the Second Vatican Council (Krokus 2012, p. 525). Although a Catholic himself, he tried to understand Islam from within and thus had a great influence on the way Islam was seen in the West; among other things, he paved the way for a greater openness inside the Catholic Church towards Islam as it was documented in the pastoral Vatican II declaration Nostra aetate. 1874réf. 21269381874. Paris: Le Clere et Compagnie. '1874' but 1879-1880. Folio. Contemporary half roan with pebble-grained cloth sides boards ruled in gilt spine richly gilt in compartments and lettered directly in gilt marbled endpapers; pp. 4 prospectus 3 list of illustrations 1 blank; 78 numbered chromolithographic plates with numbered tissue guards and a further 33 unnumbered chromolithographic plates comprising: nos. 1-16 1 17-19 1 20-26 28 33-37 39-40 42-48 50-56 58-80 66-73 33 see below; joints and extremities rubbed with a few abrasions to corners; endpapers slightly foxed; otherwise very good.A very rare collection of magnificent chromolithographic illustrations after material in the Vatican Libraries from all over the world part of a highly ambitious project of linguistic preservation and revival; it was printed under the auspices of Pope Pius IX for the twentieth anniversary of his 1854 papal bull Ineffabilis Deus concerning the Virgin Mary.Pope Pius IX 1792-1878 r. 1846-1878 conclusively defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception on 8 December 1854 declaring that the Virgin Mary was free of original sin from the moment of her conception; the bull strengthened papal authority amidst a time of great political upheaval in Europe and inspired a wave of Marian devotion. 'Churches and chapels dedicated to the Immaculate Conception were consecrated in honour of the Immaculate Conception as well as hospices colleges such as that of the Jesuits in Vaugirard and universities and institutions of every kind. As a result of the new zeal for devotion to Mary many pilgrim sanctuaries were completed or rebuilt' Roskovany p. 624 trans. Shortly after the bull was enacted Sulpician priest Marie-Dominique Sire set out to have it translated into as many languages and dialects as possible as a token of gratitude to Pope Pius IX who would have these deposited in the archives of the Vatican.'In requesting these versions approved by the highest religious authorities of each nation he wished above all that this linguistic monument as far as possible should be made a general monument of Christian art . living languages dying languages dead languages revived languages . all paid homage to the Immaculate Mary with equal haste'. This quote comes from the preface of the projected present work which is here described as 'still in progress' as quoted by Roskovany in 1881 p. 624 trans. The final work was intended to be published in four large quarto volumes. This ambitious collection of chromolithographs was intended to represent all the languages in which the Ineffabilis Deus was published according to Sire's project. We know little of the compiler Charles Moulin other than that he was a Knight of St Gregory a papal knighthood established in 1831 by Pope Gregory XVI to honour personal service to the Catholic Church and to the Holy See. The introduction states that it was to be published in fifteen instalments of approximately twenty plates each; the first portion would cost a whopping 100 francs due to high publication costs and the others 50 francs with discounts offered for upfront payment for multiple issues. The lithographs here contain contributions from all over the world from Lithuania Korea Algeria and Mongolia to the 'indigenous peoples of the mountains of North America' Australia and Central and South America. The project appears to have been severely delayed and was evidently never completed due to its sheer scope: the chromolithographic title-page is dated 8 December 1874 - the twenty-year anniverary of the Ineffabilis Deus; the letter from Pius IX to Moulin in facing French and Latin is dated 3 June 1875 and the projected dates for each of the fifteen fascicules have been altered in manuscript from 1878 and 1879 to 1879 and 1880 respectively. Contemporary advertisements indicate that the completed work was intended to be finished before the 1878 World Expo a deadline which was evidently not met. By 1881 the work was still unfinished. The Pope's 1875 letter mentions several earlier aborted attempts by others using both photography and chromolithography 'prevented by various accidents from going further. This seemed regrettable at first as is any obstacle to such a monumental publication but we now have every reason to hope as we often see in religious endeavours fraught with difficulty that this will turn out to the greatest advantage' trans.Moulin's preface notes that the projected text 'whether in French or other languages is to be illustrated with approximately three hundred illustrations. Some about sixty full-page outside the text and others of varying richness surrounding the text itself. So that the public does not have to wait long for the completion of the work we will only begin publication after more than half the plates have been finished' trans. The contents identify this is as the projected first part of four which was to comprise 'preliminaries and the introduction'. It was intended to be followed by sections on dogma and history; linguistics; and art and liturgy. Given the numerous obstacles to publication it is unclear whether plates missing from our sequence were simply never finished and the contents mention accompanying text which was seemingly never produced. Our copy wants illustrations 27 Pierre a parle par Pie IX; 29-32 bis representations of the Pope produced annually from 1854 to 'the present day i.e. 21 June 1876 seemingly all contained within a single plate; 38 La Vendee; 41 Francois de Bourbon et Aldegonde d'Autriche et d'Este; 49 La Suisse catholique; 57 Les Negrebosh de la Guyane Amerique du Midi; and 61 letter from the Pope to Charles Moulin published here as prefatory text rather than the planned chromolithographic plate with drawings by Moulin. The contents list no plates 62-65 and 67-91 was to consist of introductory text which was evidently never produced. Our copy contains following plate 72 a further thirty-three unnumbered texts which do not seem to be included in the planned sequence set out in the table of contents.OCLC finds only two copies both in North America Dayton and St Paul Canada; neither list the number of plates included; no copies traced on CCfr or Library Hub.See Roskovany Beata virgo Maria in suo conceptu immaculata ex monumentis omnium seculorum demonstrata 8 1881. hardcover

2017New Turkish Paperback. 4to. (33 x 25 cm). Edition in Turkish. 382 p., color ills. Kur'an-i Kerim sanati. Türk ve Islâm Eserleri Müzesi hazineleri. 15 Ekim 2016 - 20 Subat 2017. [Exhibition catalogue]. With contributions by François Derroche, Edhem Eldem, Jane McAuliffe, Sana Mirza, Zeren Tanindi. In the early twentieth century, the Ottoman Empire was in political turmoil. Officials moved valuable artworks--including thousands of sumptuous Qur'an (Koran) manuscripts and loose pages dating from the 7th to 17th century--to Istanbul to ensure their safety. Penned by celebrated calligraphers and embellished by skilled illuminators and bookbinders, these manuscripts are now housed in the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts (Türk ve slam Eserleri Müzesi or TIEM) in Istanbul, established in 1914. This story unfolds in "The Art of the Qur'an: Treasures from the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts," the companion publication to the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery's groundbreaking exhibition, the first major presentation of Qur'ans in the United States. The book's authors describe the formation of this one-of-a-kind collection and the history of TIEM, whose centuries-old records on patrons, calligraphers, illuminators, and provenance allow us to create "biographies" detailing the production of the Qur'ans in the exhibition. Essays address the Qur'an as a written text--from content and organization to the elaborate calligraphy and illuminated designs that transformed the volumes into beautiful artworks. "The Art of the Qur'an "also includes in-depth descriptions of some seventy works from TIEM and the Smithsonian's Sackler and Freer Galleries. It features full-page, color images of the earliest known Qur'an folios and manuscripts from the Umayyad and Abbasid Near East (7th-10th century), Seljuk Iran and Anatolia (12th century), the Mongol Il-Khanid and Timurid empires and Mamluk Cairo (14th and 15th centuries), Safavid and Ottoman empires (16th and 17th centuries) as well as a number of mosque furnishings, such as Qur'an boxes and stands. Most of these works have rarely, if ever, been published.
