Best.-Nr. NL-07001Rare map of Yemen compiled by indigenous cartographer. This striking and historically significant map entitled The Yemen was compiled by the elusive Yemeni cartographer H. Althamary - an anglicisation of Husayn ʿAbd Allah Dhamari - who is one of a handful of non-western indigeous cartographers active during the first decades of Arab independence. The map is rendered in warm ochres and yellows muted orange and bright blue conveying the country's varied elevation through a colour-coded relief scheme. The Red Sea coast forms the western boundary the Gulf of Aden defines the southern edge and the region of Asir marks the northern limit. The eastern frontier fades into the vastness of the Rubʻ al-Khali deliberately leaving the territory of the then-independent People's Democratic Republic of Yemen undefined. Strategically significant governorates including Taiz al-Baydaʾ and Maʾrib are clearly indicated. HISTORICAL CONTEXT The omission of South Yemen from the map reflects the tense political climate of the period. A brief border conflict erupted between the two Yemeni states in October 1972 resolved by the Cairo Agreement which proposed eventual unification. North Yemen was aligned with Saudi Arabia and the south with the Soviet Union. The two nations ultimately merged in 1990 forming the modern Republic of Yemen. RARITY The first edition of this map was published in Egypt in 1972 following the border conflict mentioned above. Both an Arabic edition and another English edition followed in 1976. Ours is a fine example of the second English edition. Althamary is alsoalso recognised for an equally rare companion map of Sanʿaʾ. Institutional examples are recorded at only seven libraries worldwide OCLC no. 5485806 making this an exceptional rarity on the open market. Institutional holdings include the Library of Congress Cornell University the University of Exeter Leiden University and the National Library of Scotland. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Colour lithograph printed on thin paper. Some natural cockling but otherwise in excellent condition.

These translations are not always successful in conveying to the non-Iranian reader the real sense of Omar Kayyam. The best-known rednitions depart considerably from the Persian originals. I agree with the enlightened man of letters who said: In order to be able to feel these men Ferdowski Khayyam Hafez and Rumi in t he marrow of your bones the mastery of Persian is not enough. One has to be an Iranian. It was for this reason that for the different editions of The Wine of Nishapur new translations were undertaken by knowledgeable and competent Iranian translatorrs. The readers of the English edition have the opportunity to compare Karim Emami's fine new renderings with some of the older versions." ; "In these original masterpieces that link the East and the West visuals also include many Persian calligraphic transcriptions of the Rubaiyat by Master Nasrollah Afjei. The poems are penned in their original writing. The plates are the fruit of extensive research as to form and color in compositions of rare exquisite beauty and they confer to the publication a very special quality. If Omar Khayyam will always be a source of delight to the lovers of poetry the book was also created with the aim of attracting new readers and admirer " from publisher. ; FINE/FINE Souffles, Paris, ©1988 paperback

Best.-Nr. P8-EAIL-JDIF1997 Boydell hardcover edition. Light reading wear else very good condition. From the dustjacket: John Flamsteed played a leading role in maintaining the public reputation of English astronomy for nearly half a century from his appointment as 'astronomical observator' to Charles II and first director of the new Royal Observatory at Greenwich in 1675 until his death on the last day of 1719. The innovative instruments which he installed at the Observatory enabled him to plot the movements of the heavenly bodies with unprecedented accuracy. He was also in constant correspondence with other astronomers participating in the controversies of five successive reigns including a lengthy rivalry with Isaac Newton and Edmond Halley reflected in the complex publishing history of his own Historia Coelestis. The papers collected in this book restore Flamsteed to centre-stage in Restoration science. They reflect the multi-faceted nature of his achievements as astronomer mathematician instrument maker and writer on optics as well as discussing more personal issues such as his relations with the Royal Society his pursuit of professional recognition and the friction between him and his eventual successor Halley.
