Schwarzweisse Aufnahmen von schwarzen Menschen sind vermutlich nach den «Ideologen der Totalen Korrektheit» rassistisch zu nennen. rif. PJH55654Editions Denoel Paris 1961. Ownership Signature of Roger Cardinal and with comments in his hand throughout and on rear endpaper VG in slightly rubbed publishers decorated wrappers creased on spine.Illustrated.1st edition. Roger Cardinal was one of Britains most distinguished art historians best known for defining what is generally known as Outsider Art - that is art by people with no formal training. He began his career as a lecturer at the French department of the University of Manitoba Canada subsequently moving to Warwick University and finally to the University of Kent at Canterbury where he taught for fifty years and held a professorship. Roger Cardinal was not only a leading authority on Outsider Art but also on Surrealism. He was a prolific writer and a master of literary style. His eloquent percipient writings include several books on a wide range of subjects such as Outsider Art 1972 German Romantics in Context 1975 Figures of Reality 1981 Expressionism 1984 The Landscape Vision of Paul Nash 1989 The Cultures of Collecting 1994 and Kurt Schwitters 2011. He also acted as a curator and was a regular contributor to art-historical publications. CardinalÕs interest in art lay in its margins - the neurodiverse psychotic uneducated autistic self-taught and ÔotherÕ. His fascination with artists such as the violently psychotic Adolf Wlfli lay in their creativity rather than in the sensationalism of their lives. Certainly it did not lie in the resale value of their work. That outsider art should have its own multimillion-dollar annual fair in New York and specialist departments at ChristieÕs auctioneers ran quite contrary to CardinalÕs thinking. 1920rif. 146951920. Early albumen photograph depicting an Algerian encampment during the period of French colonial rule circa late nineteenth century. 10 x7". The expansive view shows numerous canvas tents spread across an open plain beneath barren hills with groups of local Algerian men gathered throughout the camp. Horses or other pack animals supplies and equipment are visible among the tents suggesting a temporary tribal caravan market or traveling encampment. A tall solitary palm tree rises dramatically near the center of the composition providing a striking vertical element against the low tents and stark mountainous landscape. Men can be seen standing seated and congregating around the tents offering an unusually broad view of temporary camp life in rural Algeria. Although made during the French colonial period the photograph is notable for focusing on Algerian people and their material surroundings rather than on European colonial personnel. France's nineteenth-century conquest and occupation profoundly altered Algerian political economic and territorial life while indigenous communities continued longstanding traditions of pastoral movement caravan travel temporary encampment and regional commerce. The photograph therefore provides a valuable visual record of Algerian life within the larger setting of colonial rule without necessarily depicting the colonial authorities themselves. Albumen photograph with strong overall detail and an impressive panoramic composition. Visible edge wear losses and surface deterioration along portions of the margins consistent with age. unknown
