Oltre che scrittore, all'epoca assai noto ed apprezzato, Bronikowski (Dresda 1783-1834) fu militare prima nell'esercito prussiano e poi in quello del Regno di Polonia come maggiore. In questo romanzo tratta della storia di Barbara Radziwill, discussa seconda moglie di Sigismondo II Augusto, regina di Polonia e granduchessa di Lituania.
