1939réf. 183694Warsaw: Polskiej Akcyjnej Spó ki Telefonicznej 1939. A poignant document of the destruction of Warsaw's thriving Jewish community The Warsaw Telephone Directory for 1939-40. Such texts allow families and researchers to trace the owners of properties seized by the Nazis. A copy described as "an outwardly unremarkable artefact" was included in the New York Public Library's 2014 Holocaust Remembrance Day exhibition. The directory which includes many of the city's outlying suburbs was published within months of the outbreak of war. Entries include personal names occupations street addresses and telephone numbers. A business directory is included at the end. Warsaw's pre-war Jewish population of more than 350000 constituted about 30 per cent of the city's total population the second largest such community in the world after New York City. When Soviet troops liberated the devastated capital on 17 January 1945 the surviving population was just 174000. Approximately 11500 were Jews. Small folio 265 x 180 mm. Folding map; advertisements in text; some pages printed on pink paper. Contemporary black cloth brass corner protectors orange patterned endpapers original printed green wrappers bound in contemporary colour advertisement laid down on rear wrapper as issued. Light creasing and soiling internally especially affecting original wrappers and first and last leaves small hole at top-left running throughout text block likely where hung by a public telephone before binding final leaf with old paper repair at head: very good.
