1791rif. 2110Edinburgh: Printed in the year 1791. 4to pp. 38. Stitched as issued with original marbled paper covers with no backstrip. Some creasing to corners and edges a few short tears to edges of wrappers. A scarce privately printed pamphlet providing arguments from history and use that the Prince of Wales later George IV held the titles of Duke of Rothesay Earl of Carrick etc. in the Peerage of Scotland. It evidently answers a charge that these had lapsed - perhaps stemming from the regency crisis of 1789 combined with the preference for Prince of Wales as the heir apparent’s title following the Union or else perhaps the dispute goes all the way back to the absence of a holder of the titles between 1751 the death of Frederick Louis and 1762 the birth of the future George IV. rif. 20719No place Dublin. 12 November 1846. 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. Two days before the writing of this letter the London Gazette had announced 10 November 1846 that Napier then Deputy Adjutant-General in Ireland had been promoted to Lieutenant General. The letter in which he writes to his Commander in Chief in Ireland is headed 'Private'. It begins: 'My Dear Sir Edward As I grieve to think that our Official intercourse is of necessity about to terminate I hope you will allow me to take this mode of returning you my warmest thanks for all the kindness I have experienced from you since I came to the Royal Hospital'. Both men had been severely injured during the Peninsular War – Blakeney in 1811 and 1812 and Napier in 1813 – and presumably had met at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. He can 'with truth and sincerity say that the period I have served with you here has been by far the happiest during the whole of my Military Career'. He states: 'I quit my present position on Promotion' but feels certain that Blakeney approves of the manner in which he has conducted the duties of his department. He has 'no right to expect' that he will 'be employed at once upon the Staff' but adds: 'I trust my time may come & when it does I sincerely hope it may be under your Command & the more immediate the better I should like it'. 1839pp. xciv [Introduction in English], (1), 162 [Latin Text of De Arte Logistica] + Engraved frontispiece portrait of Napier; and a full page mezzotint style engraving of the old Castle Merchiston. Large 4to. 300 mm. Original cloth backed boards binding; joints cracked. Hardbound. Very good. First Edition. John Napier, 8th Laird of Merchiston, (1550-1617), was a Scottish mathematician - the Inventor of Logarithms. His 'Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descriptio' (1614) contained the first logarithmic table and the first use of the word logarithm. His Rabdologiae (1617) gave various methods for abbreviating arithmetical calculations. One method of multiplication uses a system of numbered rods called Napier's rods, or Napier's bones; this was a major improvement on the ancient system of counters then in use. Napier also introduced the decimal point in writing numbers. The material here, dealing mainly with arithmetic and algebra, survived in manuscript form and was transcribed, after Napier's death, by his son Robert for the benefit of Henry Briggs, who further edited it. Sponsored by a descendant, Mark Napier, this is its first publication. From this work, it appears that Napier had investigated imaginary roots of equations, a subject he refers to as a great algebraic secret. SCARCE. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! OVERSIZE BX 4
