1636rif. 2189Loose-leaf. Good -/Fair. Archivally matted and framed decorated page from a damaged copy of the 1636 Scottish Book of Common Prayer which was influential on the American Book of Common Prayer. The decorated page is very fragile and shows evidence of minor tears in the upper left corner and the bottom right. As is evidenced in the photo the page is decorated by an elaborate header more than 1" high. After the page title follows a delicately illustrated capital T. The text gives instructions on how the Old and New Testaments are to be read throughout the year. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. A very nice portion of the scarce first edition of the Scottish Book of Common Prayer. Makes an excellent gift. Edinburgh: Printed by Robert Young 1636. rif. 14009Without place or date but with reference to 'George Salmond Writer Glasgow'. Early nineteenth-century. 2pp. 4to. On leaf untidily torn from an album resulting in a ragged edge with minor loss of text a few parts of words. On aged and chipped paper. The document is headed 'Forgery of the Commercial Bank of Scotlands Guinea Note' and begins: As a few off these Forged Notes have made their appearance in Glasgow e following directions are given to enable the public to distinguish the forged from the genuine Notes.' A detailed description follows with small illustrations given of the shapes of the letter 'B' in forgery and genuine note with other illustrations of a thistle both with and 'without prickles'. The document ends: 'It is requested that if any of these forged Notes are presented the same and those offering them may be detained and proceeded with according to the Law and that notice may be immediately sent to George Salmond Writer Glasgow who will pay the expenses and liberally remunerate those giving any information which may be of Service or may lead to Conviction of offenders.' No other copy traced either on COPAC or WorldCat. The Scottish guinea note was introduced in 1758 and discontinued in 1828. The book 'Rambling Recollections of Old Glasgow' by 'Nestor' contains a reference to 'Mr. George Salmond long Procurator-Fiscal at Glasgow' who 'kept an album or rather nigrum containing a collection of forged notes with notices of the results to the persons implicated in their forgery or issue. There seldom was a Circuit in Glasgow where there were not several men or women sentenced to death for such crimes and several expiated their offences on the scaffold'. Salmond was Procurator-Fiscal by 1826 so this item would appear to date from before then. Without place or date, but with reference to 'George Salmond, Writer, Glasgow'. Early nineteenth-century. unknown

1845rif. BK0036Isle of Mull Scotland 1845. Autograph letter signed by a female member of the MacLeod family with an additional message signed "Mary McLeod" to the Rev. John Neil MacLeod in New York. 4pp measuring 9 x 7 inches. Addressed to "The Rev'd J. N. Macleod D.D. Presbyterian Minister New York United States North America." Postmarked at Tobermory prepaid "1/-" with London transit markings and intact black wax seal. Folded with very small holes at folds; excellent. A Scottish family and ecclesiastical letter containing an early direct condemnation of the Free Church of Scotland's acceptance of donations from slaveholding Presbyterians in the American South. Written in March 1845 the letter predates Frederick Douglass's arrival in Scotland and the public campaign urging the Free Church to "Send Back the Money." It demonstrates that criticism of the church's American fundraising was already circulating privately within Scottish Presbyterian networks before Douglass helped transform the controversy into a major transatlantic abolitionist cause. Following the Disruption of 1843 the newly established Free Church sent representatives to the United States to raise money. Contributions from southern churches and slaveholding ministers generated growing criticism particularly because the Free Church presented itself as a purer and more principled form of Presbyterianism. The writer identifies what she regarded as the central contradiction: the church refused communion with ministers who remained in the established Church of Scotland while recognizing slaveholding American ministers as Christian brethren and accepting their money. She writes: "What can you think now of their disclaiming to hold communion with any of their Bretheren in the Establishment and avowedly & publicly countenancing and holding communion with the Slave holding Ministers in your Southern States. Their coffers have been largely augmented by donations from these States and the leaders of the Free recognize them as Bretheren and write and speak of them with the greatest respect." Her criticism is directed as much at the church's financial expediency as at its inconsistency: "This has opened the eyes of some as to what they will resort to get money-this Church that professed to be a pure Church. Oh does it not clearly show the inconsistencies of man nay even of Christians what a different view these leaders may take of Slavery from what your respected Father had." Douglass began his Scottish campaign the following year when he and other abolitionists repeatedly challenged the Free Church to return the money received from American slaveholders. Writing to William Lloyd Garrison in April 1846 Douglass declared "Scotland is a blaze of anti-slavery agitation-the Free Church and Slavery are the all-engrossing topics."1 The present letter records essentially the same moral argument a year earlier made from within the church's own extended religious and family networks: that accepting southern funds compromised the Free Church's authority and exposed the limits of its professed purity. Addressed to the Rev. John Neil MacLeod in New York the letter places the dispute within a transatlantic Presbyterian context. The writer invokes the antislavery views of MacLeod's father and questions whether the recipient understood that a minister whom he had permitted to preach from his pulpit "advocated the course of the Southern Slave State Ministers so much" remarking "I should think not." The letter also contains news of a bereavement and other family and church news about Scotland and America. An important private response to the Free Church's American fundraising campaign written before the controversy reached its fullest public expression through Frederick Douglass's "Send Back the Money" campaign. The letter documents the early moral opposition of Scottish Presbyterians who believed that a church claiming spiritual independence and purity had compromised both by accepting the support of American slaveholders. . unknown

1848rif. 97631848. Full Leather. Good binding. 5-1/4" x 3-3/8." 108 pp. Full brown leather over flexible boards. Vertical red rules for accounting printed on each page. 1-3/8" strip of leather neatly removed from the fore-edge of the front cover; occasional ink spotting and minor stains throughout; toned leaves with a few creases; faded pencil calculations to pastedowns. Interesting mid-19th century farm ledger apparently from eastern Scotland possibly Inverurie or Aberdeen recorded during the great famines in Ireland and the Scottish Highlands. The currency symbols at the top of the expense and income columns appear to be in pounds shilling and pence and various place and personal names which appear repeatedly in the text – i.e. Commercial Co. of Port Elfinston sic Aberdeen Wm. Duncan et al – lead to our deducing this locale. Although the ledger is anonymous the names of Robert Frasier Brach and James Dugard appear possibly as business clients as do the names of the recorder's many temporary workers. These workers usually hired around the planting and harvesting season are both male and female and include Mary Ellice Jas Marr George Dugard Wm. Duncan Alex Burr and many others. Extensively detailed and highly readable this ledger document the many expenses and income sources of a working farm showing precise amounts for equipment scythes and carts feature prominently horses bolls of meal barrels of lime whisky and various other sundries. The farm's produce relied heavily on grains especially corn and barley just as the Corn Laws were being heatedly debated in Parliament and its overall diversity demonstrates the crop diversity that allowed eastern Scotland and the Lowlands to evade the ravages of the potato blight; plots and crops for planting the "slack land" are also demarcated. Charts showing daily employee wages are also of special note. Overall a unique useful and well-maintained agricultural document concurrent with and standing in stark contrast to the devastation occurring in the western portion of the country and Ireland at that time. unknown
