"In this series of 'Letters' defending the issuance of Scottish banknotes Scott benefits from his work on Swift by patterning the Malachi Malagrowther letters on Swift's Drapier's Letters" Todd & Bowden p. 621. "In February 1826 there may have been a degree of calculation in Scott's entering the debate on a government measure introduced to deal with the economic crisis which would have restricted the rights of the Scottish banks to issue their own notes but Scott represented it as a nationalist issue 'the late disposition to change every thing in Scotland to an English model' Journal 94. In February and March he wrote three letters to the editor of the Edinburgh Weekly Journal in which he used the currency issue as an exemplum for the larger tendency. The letters caused a sensation. Ministerial friends were very angry but withdrew the measure. The banks were grateful; taking a lead from his old rival in love William Forbes they agreed to the creation of a trust for the settling of Scott's debts and The Letters of Malachi Malagrowther as the letters are now known is recognized as a classic in political argument" DNB. 1851rif. 26049Title: The Breeding and Economy of Live Stock: Being the Results of Forty Years' Practical Experience in the Management and Disposal of Cattle Horses Sheep and Pigs. Author: DICKSON James One of the Judges of the Cattle Shows of the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland and Author of Various Papers in the Quarterly Journal of Agriculture. Publisher: Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black North Bridge Booksellers and Publishers to the Queen. Printer: Edinburgh: Printed by Neill and Company. Date: 1851 M DCCC LI Edition: Second Edition Revised and Corrected / Custom Scottish Agricultural Tour Copy. Language: English Format: Octavo 8vo approx. 19.5 x 12.5 cm. Condition Report & Description: An entirely honest unrestored survival of a rare mid-Victorian agricultural handbook presented in its original publisher's light beige printed paper wrappers over stiff card boards or temporary printed card covers. The paper spine backstrip is completely perished and missing yet the text block remains structurally tight flat and remarkably firm on its original heavy industrial sewing. Plats and outer wrappers are naturally age-toned and rubbed showing typical shelf-wear historic stains and corner exposure. The interior is exceptionally crisp and clean featuring a beautifully preserved wood-engraved frontispiece plate of a "Short-Horned Cow Julia Age 4 Years" complete with its original protective tissue guard. The text pages finishing on page 219 followed by Adam & Charles Black's multi-page "New and Cheap Edition" publisher's announcements catalogue display very little stains or foxing remaining completely free of modern signatures text underlines or marginal markings. Provenance & Association Significance: From the historic Civil Collection of Lavigny Château de Lavigny inventory. The primary front blank flyleaf page carries a magnificent crisp contemporary dark ink ownership signature: "Louis Tronchin / Edinburgh 1852" complete with his elegant personal underline flourish. Louis Tronchin 1825–1873—the future Colonel in the Swiss Federal Army—personally acquired this volume in Scotland during an extensive mid-19th-century foreign agricultural and tactical field tour. While valuable for the estate's civil modernization his intense focus on Chapter XIV "On Horses" and general livestock mechanics directly reflects his professional development as a rising cavalry officer. In an era when remount logistics horse breeding standards and equine endurance were paramount to national defense this textbook serves as an invaluable material record of a Swiss cavalry commander analyzing advanced British veterinary and breeding sciences for strategic military application.
