rif. 146656Very Good. Written on a sheet of laid paper 210 × 240 mm folded into six for posting; trifling wear at the intersection of the folds; some faint marks and other signs of age and handling; remnants of wax seal below the signature; in excellent condition overall. The letter relates to the Ingrian War early in the reign of Gustavus Adolphus in which he attempted to assert his brother's claim to the throne of the Russian Empire. While this aim was not achieved Gustavus was able to annexe significant territory around the Baltic coast effectively turning the Baltic Sea into a 'Swedish Lake' and laid the foundation for his reputation as one of the greatest military leaders of the day. Also mentioned in the document is Åke Oxenstierna scion of the important Oxenstierna family and later commander of the Dalarna regiment. unknown

With the text in Russian and French in parallel columns and with ornamental rules at the head of each page. 10; 20 pp. First and only editions of two peace treaties between Catherine the Great of Russia and Gustav III of Sweden which concluded the Russo-Swedish war of 1788-1790 each page with the Russian text in the left column and the French text in the right column. The Treaty of Värälä signed on 14 August 1790 though here dated 6 August by Catherine's representative Otto Heinrich Igelström and Gustav II's proxy Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt effectively restored the pre-war status quo and barred Russia from interferring in Swedish internal affairs which had been one of the reasons Gustav III a cousin of Catherine the Great declared war on Russia in 1788. After initial defeats Sweden was able to destroy nearly a third of the Russian fleet at sea. The second treaty signed on 19 October 1791 at Drottningholm outside of Stockholm established a close military alliance between Sweden and the Russian Empire with each power pledging active support and Catherine agreeing to pay Sweden annual subsidies. Since it was signed with a keen eye on the French Revolution the treaty can been seen as a predecessor to the war of the first coalition of 1792-1797 though neither Russia nor Sweden participated in the latter. Both are printed on Russian paper with cyrillic names and initials in the watermarks. Bohus Fortress also known as Baahus or Båhus originally: Bágahús lies along the old NorwegianSwedish border in Kungälv Bohuslän Sweden north east from Hisingen where the Göta river splits into two branches 20 km 12 mi north of Gothenburg. It commands the surrounding area from a cliff 40 m 130 ft high with the river forming a natural moat around it. The fortress was attacked or besieged 14 times but was never captured. During the Northern Seven Years' War in 15631570 it was seriously damaged. This occurred in 1566 when 250 Swedish soldiers successfully stormed the northeastern-most tower. The Norwegian commander sent in a volunteer to blow up the ammunition stores underneath the tower killing the Swedes and repelling the attack. As a reward the family of the volunteer got a piece of land which is still owned by the descendants of this volunteer. The Norwegians rebuilt the fortress of stone and brick and reinforced it substantially. The reconstruction immediately after the war was directed by Hans Paaske Påske from the Netherlands. In 15931604 similar to the construction then undertaken at Akershus in Oslo Bohus was upgraded to a bastion fortress. A new outer fortification was raised. This construction was one of the early works of Hans van Steenwinckel also from the Netherlands who later became noted for his Dutch Renaissance style design in Denmark. As Swedish invasions continuously threatened Norwegian Båhuslen during this time period the improvement of the fortifications went on for years. For example starting in the summer of 1651 and until the autumn of 1652 the Dutch engineer Isaac van Geelkerck supervised the construction of two corner towers along the south façade and a new ring wall that was constructed around the arsenal building. Under the terms of the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658 DenmarkNorway ceded the Danish provinces of Scania Blekinge and Halland the latter was agreed to belong to Sweden for a period of 30 years after the Peace of Brömsebro but was given to Sweden permanently in the treaty of Roskilde and the Norwegian provinces Trøndelag and Bohuslän including the Bohus Fortress. After DenmarkNorway ceded the territory which included Bohus Fortress Fredriksten Fortress was constructed in Fredrikshald on the newly established Norwegian-Swedish border. Since the Bohus Fortress no longer lay on the border it was of small use to Sweden which relied on the existing Älvsborg fortress at Gothenburg and the new Carlsten Fortress built at Marstrand. Instead the fortress was used as a prison. The most noted prisoner was the radical pietist Thomas Leopold who spent 42 years of his life behind bars 32 of those at Bohus for his alleged heresies. His stone-clad cell still exists in the castle. At the end of the 18th century it was decided that the now unused fortress should be demolished. Demolition crews worked at the fortress for two months after that the money allocated for the job had run out. Residents of the nearby town of Kungälv used the dressed stone from the fortress to build houses. However much of the fortress is still intact including the large northern tower Fars hatt "Father's hat". As of 2015 the fortress is a museum open to visitors during summer. Wikipedia unknown

Having no heirs Bernadotte the French marshal was selected successor to the Swedish throne due to his popularity with the people. He became Charles XIV in 1818. 1825rif. BK0190Stockholm Sweden 1825. One large folded commercial sheet written on several panels with integral address panel to Messrs. Brown & Ives Providence Rhode Island endorsed "Pr. Brig Harvest" with Newport "SHIP" marking. Headed "Triplicate. Old folds and light handling wear very good. A commercial letter and account from the Stockholm mercantile house of Kantzow & Biel to Brown & Ives of Providence concerning the execution of a large order for Swedish iron. The firm reports that it is assembling a shipment of arranging its transport while the accounting on another portion of the same sheet records the value of the iron and related charges. The letter reports: "the contents giving us the desired opportunity of confirming you Your order for a Shipmt. of 200 Tons Iron to be ship'd & appointed and convoy which we shall of course prevail the commencement on." The letter dates from a period of rapid expansion in Swedish iron exports to the United States which had displaced Britain as Sweden's most important foreign market for bar iron. Britain had reduced its dependence on Swedish imports while American tariff legislation favored hammered iron from Sweden and Russia over British rolled iron. American demand became particularly important to the Swedish industry in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. The United States purchased approximately three-fifths of Sweden's iron exports in 1822 with mainly American vessels engaged in the trade. The account also records a credit entered July 28 "By your proportion of dividend in payment from the Swedish Government". Brown & Ives had longstanding claims against Sweden arising from American property seized during the Napoleonic Wars including tobacco and rice belonging to the firm taken from the General Hamilton in 1810.1 The Swedish government finally settled the American claims in July 1825 following years of diplomatic representations concerning the confiscation and sale of American property at Stralsund. The credit recorded here appears to represent Brown & Ives's share of that indemnity entered less than two weeks after the settlement was formally concluded on July 16. The correspondence thus brings together two aspects of Swedish-American relations in the immediate postwar period: the expansion of an iron trade increasingly important to Sweden's economy and the settlement of commercial grievances dating back fifteen years. The shift reflected the changing geography of Atlantic commerce as Britain's increasingly mechanized iron industry reduced its dependence on Swedish imports while the rapidly industrializing United States emerged as Sweden's principal customer. However American iron production expanded enough to challenge Sweden's position in the American market particularly beginning in the 1830s and 1840s. 1 Calendar of the Miscellaneous Letters Received by the Department of State Government Printing Office 1897 47. . unknown
