2019New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 23 cm). In English. 192 p., ills. Archival memories: Marcell Restle's research in Anatolia and beyond. Authors: Su Sultan Akülker, Klaus Belke, Birgitt Borkopp-Restle, Friedrich Hild, Cedric Huss, Johannes Koder, Caroline Mang, Philipp Pichler, Nina Rannharter, Marcell Restle, Lioba Theis, B. Tolga Uyar, Peter Waldhausl... Marcell Restle was born in 1932 in a small town named Bad Waldsee in southern Germany and studied art history, Byzantine studies, and the history of Christianity at the universities of Tu?bingen and Munich. The classes Restle took from German and Turkish professors at Istanbul University, where he studied for a year, opened up new horizons for him. The studies he made of Islamic, Seljuk, and, especially, Ottoman art and architecture, as well as of Byzantine art; the classes he taught at the universities of Vienna and Munich on these topics; and the countless study trips he made around the Eastern Mediterranean, including to Istanbul and Anatolia, made him an expert in the field of architecture, especially in the systematic documentation of buildings. "Archival Memories" on the one hand informs viewers about how a researcher organized his working day, how he systematically allotted his time, and what methods he used in the pre-digital age. On the other hand, it aims to present from retrospective perspectives the states of numerous cultural assets, most of which remain today only as memories within urban structures.

1945Very Good Turkish Paperback. Uncut pages. Soiling and slightly stained on covers. Otherwise a very good set. 12mo. (18 x 11,5 cm). In Turkish. 4 volumes set: ([8], 338 p.; [8], 327 p.; [4], 292 p.; [4], 501 p.). Tom Jones: Sokakta bulunmus bir çocugun hikayesi. [= The history of Tom Jones; A foundling]. 4 volumes set. Translated to Turkish by Mina Urgan. The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling, often known simply as Tom Jones, is a comic novel by English playwright and novelist Henry Fielding. It is both a Bildungsroman and a picaresque novel. It was first published on 28 February 1749 in London, and is among the earliest English prose works to be classified as a novel. It is the earliest novel mentioned by W. Somerset Maugham in his 1948 book Great Novelists and Their Novels among the ten best novels of the world. Tom Jones is generally regarded as Fielding's greatest book and as an influential English novel. Urgan was a Turkish academic, translator, author and socialist politician. She translated works of Thomas Malory (c. 1415-1471), Henry Fielding (1707-1754), Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850), Aldous Huxley (1894-1963), Graham Greene (1904-1991), William Golding (1911-1993), John Galsworthy (1867-1933) and Shakespeare (1564-1616) into Turkish. She was honored with the "Golden Book Award" in 1993. 2020New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 456 p. The rivalry between Russia and Britain over the autonomous Province of Eastern Rumelia is a historical fact. This study examines tis fact via two historical events concerning the development of the Province - the process of establishment and administrative organization of Eastern Rumelia (1878-1879) and the event of unification between the Province and the Principality of Bulgaria. It argues that the British authorities created the Province of Eastern Rumelia and later they defended the act of unification with the purpose to thwart the Russian political advancement in the Balkans. The British political aim was successfully accomplished as Russia achieved to preserve its political domination in the Province only until 1885 when it opposed the act of unification. This research is based on archival documentary sources and secondary sources. The archive collections used for preparation of this work are the collections of the Foreign Office of the National Archive. The existing historiography on the issue of Eastern Rumelia is very limited as regards the variety of examined topics, though a considerable number of researches are dedicated to the act of unification and the political, cultural and economic development of the Province from 1878 to 1885.

1920Very Good Persian First Edition of this extremely rare bilingual tractate including Prince Reza Khan's thoughts on Anglo-Persian agreement in1919. Mirza Reza Khan also known as Prince Rezâ Arfa', was a diplomat and poet of the late Qajar period who serviced in Constantinople. During his years of service abroad Reza became acquainted with a number of European political leaders. He was reported to entertain Russian sympathies and was certainly instrumental in negotiating the first Russian government loan to Persia, in 1317 / 1900. Nevertheless, he also appears to have supported the Anglo-Persian Agreement of 1919. In 1332 / 1914 he served as minister of justice (wazîr-e 'adlîya) in Tehran for about a year. This agreement in 1919 was a provisional agreement made between the British and the Persian governments which, if ratified, would have granted the British a paramount position of control over the financial and military affairs of Iran. From the days when Napoleon conceived the idea of invading India with the help of Alexander I, the Tsar of Russia, Great Britain contemplated with apprehension the invasion of India by Russia via Persia and Afghanistan. Under the Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907 (q.v.), which divided Persia into rival spheres of influence, southern Persia was assigned to Britain while Russia controlled the northern portion. Later, according to the terms of "The Secret Treaties of Constantinople" of 18 March 1915, Constantinople was promised to Russia, and England was allowed to incorporate within her sphere of influence the neutral zone of Persia. (Source: Encyclopedia Iranica). Original wrappers. Slightly chipped on extremities and occasionally foxing on cover. Otherwise a very good copy. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). 1910Very Good English Original sepia-toned large-sized albumen print photograph of a group of soldiers of the 4th Troop, C Squadron of The Q.O.R.G.Y., probably taken before WW I. Mounted on cardboard. 29x24 cm. Descriptive words in English. Exceedingly rare and attractive photo shows 32 troops with their guns on horses, presumably in Britain, as evidenced by the topographic view in the background. The Queen's Own Royal Glasgow Yeomanry was a yeomanry regiment of the British Army that can trace their formation back to 1796. Projecting the nation: European states in the 1920s and 1930s.= Ulusu tasarlamak: 1920'ler ve 1930'larda Avrupa devletleri. [Exhibition catalogue]. At a time when the boundaries of Europe and the future of European modernity are contested once again in the face of Turkey's candidacy to the European Union, the publication Projecting the Nation offers a critical reflection on the recent past of Europe. Focusing on the multiple and competing modernities of the 1920s and 1930s, a period which also saw the dawn of Turkish modernity, the exhibition explores how nations were invented and shaped by state power. In the age of mass politics, visual political culture - itself a product of modern technology - took on a fundamental role in creating and molding mass consensus. For European states, in this era of competing ideologies and exacerbated nationalism, self-exhibition was no longer restricted to a message of authority and legitimacy targeting the cultural elite. It now became a crucial and novel element of statecraft, a cultural offensive grounded in propaganda, and a source of self-legitimation for political power. In all circumstances, the ultimate stake was control over mass culture. Highlighting strong instances of self-exhibition in the Soviet Union, Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, Kemalist Turkey, interwar France and conflict-torn Spain, Projecting the Nation presents a cross-territorial examination of the similarities, differences and borrowings of forms of modernity unbound. [Exhibition catalogue]. This exhibition focused on the paintings made by British artists of the 'Orient', primarily during the nineteenth century. In this context the term 'Orient', to Western Europeans, meant those parts of the eastern Mediterranean world which could be accessed relatively easily such as Egypt, Palestine and Turkey, particularly after the development of steamboat and rail travel in the 1830s. In these places, predominantly Muslim and at least nominally under the control of the Ottoman Empire, British artists, such as David Roberts, David Wilkie, William Holman Hunt, John Frederick Lewis and Frederic Leighton, sought to develop imagery which captured what they believed to be characteristic of the people, cities and landscapes of the region. In the 1970s the Palestinian-American academic Edward Said published his treatise on Orientalism, initiating a global debate over Western representations of the Middle East. For many, such representations now appeared to be a sequence of fictions, serving the West's desire for superiority and control over the East. The argument for and against Said's Orientalism has continued for thirty years. Its resonance for an exhibition such as this one, however, is as strong as ever given that, by the 1920s (the end of the period covered by this exhibition), Britain was in direct control of much of the newly abolished Ottoman Empire, including Egypt, Palestine and Iraq. As Said argued, these images cannot be viewed in isolation from their wider political and cultural context. Keeping the debates around Orientalism in mind, "The Lure of the East" focuses on the range of pictorial options open to British artists, within five major themes: portraits, genre, religious and domestic subjects and landscape. British painters came to the Middle East from a culture steeped in technical and compositional artistic traditions. Such traditions were not easily unlearned, despite the apparent difference of the people and places the artists encountered on their travels. Given this, British Orientalist painters found many challenges in attempting to represent the Middle East, but they also found inspiration and, more importantly, the freedom to rework, reinvent and even discard those conventions that defined picture-making in Britain.

John Garstang's Footsteps Across Anatolia aims to highlight the international contributions of John Garstang towards the study of archaeology in Turkey and the Near East. He was one of the first advocates of using photography as a means of documenting procedures and findings of archaeological excavations. In Turkey, Garstang was accompanied on his Anatolia Survey (1907) and Sakçagözü excavations (1908-1911) by his German assistant, Horst Schliephack. The result of over five years of research by The University of Liverpool, this book presents a series of short discursive articles about Garstang's work in Turkey and the Near East and a catalogue of newly digitised glass plate negatives from his 1907 journey across Anatolia. Garstang's photographs are an irreplaceable record of the archaeological sites, landscapes and peoples of Turkey and north Syria in the period of the late Ottoman Empire.
