184854 p. + Advertisements at end [1 p.] + Sixteen lively colored plates (including the title), printed by Vizetelly from drawings by Thackeray. Small 4to. 19 cm. Original wraps bound in. Later full morocco binding rebacked in leather. Thackeray, in both his writing and his satirical illustrations, delineates characters and scenes, with a few quick strokes that are more telling than most heftier volumes. "one of our best comic writers. bears comparison to Moliere." Britannia IX (1848); Flamm 58-67; Van Duzer, 157-158. The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 5, 1848), speaking of "Our Street" - "The charm of Thackeray's writing is that it is like talking - pleasant, sunny, half-trifling, half-earnest chat - in fact, a sort of wise man's prattle. He makes his book speak like a man." W140
173311 leaves (of 12? - No half title, if one was ever present). 21 cm. Modestly soiled. Leather backed cloth boards. Goldsmiths'-Kress Library of Economic Literature: No. 7170. In Fog's Journal, an early news sheet, there was a call (by way of historical allegory) for the assassination of Robert Walpole and others. Walpole, the Earl of Oxford (1676-1745), was really Britain's first Prime Minister. He governed through a time of relative peace and prosperity, but not without controversies. In 1733 Walpole's influence received a profound blow. Serious frauds relating to excise duties were uncovered. He proposed to check smuggling and avoid fraud by levying the full tax on wine and tobacco, not at their point of sale, but upon their first removal from the various warehouses. "His opponents fastened on these proposals with irresistible force, and so serious an agitation stirred the country that the ministerial measure was dropped amid general rejoicing. Several of his most active antagonists were dismissed from office or deprived of their regiments, but their spirits remained unquenched." - William Prideaux Courtney in the 11th Ed. EB. Though intended as a defense of Walpole, this pamphlet does not say that Fog's Weekly Journal was wrong to attack him - only that they overstepped their bounds by calling for his assassination. Juggling the power of political protest in the public press with freedom of speech was always a tricky affair. Responding in 1734 to the concerns of Queen Caroline over these, and other controversies Walpole said not to worry too much about it: "Madame, there are 50,000 men slain in Europe, and not one Englishman." VERY RARE. W140.
1843Four volumes. pp. 348; 320; 360; 352. Color lithographed (illuminated) title pages, and chapter heads. Numerous fine line woodcuts used as additional chapter heads or illustrations. All of the engravings were executed under the superintendence of E. Landells. The volumes have full page etchings or woodcuts and smaller work by: John Leech (1817-1864) a brilliant and prolific English caricaturist and illustrator; Hablot Knight Browne (1815-1882) an English artist, famous as Phiz, the illustrator of many books by Charles Dickens; William James Linton (1812-1897) an engraver and political activist; Kenny Meadows (1790-1874); and many others often associated with the magazine Punch. Early half red morocco leather over marbled boards. Joints fragile. Spine of the last volume lacks a 1.5" piece of leather. Large 4to. 285 mm. Hardbound. Very good. The editor, Douglas William Jerrold (1803-1857) was an English dramatist, writer, editor, and wit. He is most closely associated with PUNCH. Punch was a humorous and liberal publication and Jerrold, under the pseudonym 'Q', used satire to attack institutions of the day. His liberal satirical inclinations can be seen in 'The Illuminated Magazine' as well. Some of the articles are quite remarkable. Often noted are those on social conditions - prisons, the poor, etc. The articles range across a wide spectrum of art, taste, manners, customs, and observations. They are often quite remarkable. The original edition of the full set, as offered here, is rarely encountered today. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W79
1844pp. ii, 360. Color lithographed (illuminated) title page, and two chapter heads. Numerous fine line woodcuts used as additional chapter heads or illustrations. Five full page etchings (four by Leech), browned from the ink in this example (as apparently in most others). Early half leather over marbled boards. Joints fragile. Large 4to. 280 mm. Hardbound. The featured illustrator, John Leech (1817-1864) was an enormously popular English caricaturist and artist. Some of the articles are quite remarkable. Often noted are those on social conditions - prisons, the poor, etc. The articles illustrated by Kenny Meadows (1790-1874) are especially interesting and include one on witchcraft. Another fascinating article we've never seen previously noted is on BOWIE KNIVES. It bears illustrations from one of the Sheffield (England) manufacturers that exported so many Bowie Knives to the U.S. They became almost ubiquitous in the Civil War, especially (but not exclusively) on the Confederate side. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Original crimson full cloth over beveled boards binding. The boards and spine are decorated with gilt strap designs. Corners worn. Edward E. Salisbury (1814-1901), by permission, gathered this valuable information from the archives of the New Haven Colony Historical Society, and, after some revision, had it privately printed in April 1876. The most famous early member of the family was Giovanni Diodati or Deodati (1576-1649), a Swiss theologian and translator. He was the first person to translate the Bible into Italian from Hebrew and Greek sources. He was born at Geneva, of a noble family originally from Lucca which had been exiled on account of its Protestantism. John Milton supposedly vacationed at the Villa Diodati in 1639. In 1816 it was the summer residence of Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, John Polidori and others - and thus the first home of Frankenstein and The Vampyre. Hardbound. Very good. Mary Anne Thompson Clarke (1776-1852) became the mistress of Prince Frederick Augustus (1763-1827) Duke of York in 1803, while he was Commander-in-Chief of British forces. He set her up in a fashionable residence, but failed to supply the funds necessary to support their lavish lifestyle. In 1809, a national scandal arose when Clarke testified before the House of Commons that she had sold army commissions with the Duke of York's knowledge. Frederick was forced to resign from his position. A select committee was appointed by the British House of Commons to enquire into the matter. The parliament eventually acquitted the Duke of having received bribes by 278 votes to 196. He nevertheless resigned because of the high tally against him. In 1811, after it was revealed that Clarke had received payment from the Duke's disgraced chief accuser, Gwyllym Lloyd Wardle (1762?-1833), the Prince Regent reappointed the now exonerated Duke of York as commander-in-chief. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Mirror for Magistrates is a collection of English poems and prose from the Tudor period, by various authors, which retell the lives and the tragic ends of various historical figures. "the entire work contained almost one hundred lives, covering the period from Albanact in 1085 BC to Elizabeth in 1603 and written over 60 years. popular and highly regarded during the Tudor period. Philip Sidney, mentions the work in his Defence of Poesy, saying that it was "meetly furnished of beautiful parts". The influence of the work was evident in many contemporary works such as Albion's England by the poet William Warner and Cromwell by Michael Drayton which was actually included in the 1610 edition. It was also significant for its development of the form of tragedy in English literature, with Higgins' story of Lier and Cordila providing a source for Shakespeare's King Lear.
