He distinguished himself in public religious controversy. When Ireland became disturbed in 1689, Leslie removed with his family to England, where he employed himself in writing political pamphlets (opposed to the existing government but zealous in support of the Church of England). About this time he entered into a controversy with the Quakers, said to have arisen from the circumstance of his lodging with a family of that persuasion. This family he converted. This is the first of the several treatises which he wrote against the Quakers. It was answered by George Whithead in a pamphlet entitled, "An Antidote to the Snake in the Grass." In this important Second Edition Mr. Leslie noticed this answer; but he was again assailed in a production called, 'Satan Dissolved from his Disguises of Light' which also appeared in 1696. To this, and several other attacks, Mr Leslie replied at great length in "A Defence of a book entitled the Snake in the Grass." This again provoked a host of answers, amongst which was one by the Quakers, entitled "A Switch for the Snake." To this Mr Leslie again replied in "A Second Defence, or the third and last part of the Snake in the Grass." Wing L1157; Smith, Anti-Quakeriana p. 267. Very Scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PA 59.

1860pp. xvi, 423 + Frontis. Slight foxing. 12mo. 19 cm. Original full cloth binding. Engraved ExLibris of George Dawson Coleman. Very good. This first American edition of the first of what eventually became four series. It includes Buckland's popular essays on: 'A Hunt in a Horse-pond; 'Rats'; 'The Cobra di Capello'; 'Fish and Fishing'; and 'My Monkey Jacko.' Known as the People's Naturalist, Buckland was trained as a medical doctor but spent a great part of his time as a fisherman, antiquary, and naturalist. In 1867 he was appointed to the congenial post of Inspector of the Salmon Fisheries. "Genial, sagacious, enthusiastic, always prone to look at the humorous side of his subject, Buckland aimed rather at enlisting the sympathies of others in his favourite studies than at acquiring the name of a profound writer on science. He held the ordinary usages of society in supreme contempt when they appeared to interfere with his zeal for experiment and research in natural history. His friends love to recall him - now wading into some icy cold river to capture salmon for the purposes of artificial breeding - now smoking and in his shirt sleeves as he arranged curiosities at South Kensington - and now again humorously dilating in his house in Albany street about the habits of the pet animals which generally ran loose through his rooms" - From the 'Dictionary of National Biography' Scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! 1846pp. (13), 147. Thin 8vo. Handsome original full cloth binding, lettered in gold and decorated in blind, executed by Westleys & Clark, London - with their small ticket on the rear paste down. Mildly XLib. James Orchard Halliwell (1820-1889) was a biographer of Shakespeare, book collector, antiquarian, and prodigal scholar. In spite of his intelligence and industry, Halliwell's life was dogged with controversy on both personal and professional fronts. His marriage to the daughter of Sir Thomas Phillips did not meet with Phillips' approval, and the young couple was disinherited and placed in financial st aits. He was later investigated for book theft from the library of Trinity College, Cambridge, regarding several volumes later sold to the British Museum, but no charges were ever filed and Halliwell was able to clear his name. Later disputes arose over Halliwell's views concerning the authenticity of various Shakespeareian works. His quarrel with the authorities at Stratford-on-Avon led to his decision not to bequeath his important personal Shakespeare collection to their library; instead, it was sold to a buyer in the United States upon Halliwell's death.
