1798257 p. Double column. 8vo. 210 mm. Later plain wraps. Blank corner missing from first two leaves. A wonderfully miscellaneous collection of late 18th century observation and commentary on (mostly English) life, history, manners, politics, economics, and all sorts of prominent men (and women). Some of the essays are quite substantial and illuminating. In many of them there is a generous portion of humorous misogyny. It make for worthwhile reading by anyone interested in 18th century Britain. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! HUMOR 8
1903pp. v, 154. 16mo. 165 mm. Unusual contemporary full cloth binding. Autograph ownership of Belle Shetter. Very good. "Ninth edition." Henry Augustus Shute (1856-1943) was a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy (1875) and Harvard University (1879). He was born and lived in Exeter, New Hampshire, where he worked as a lawyer and a judge of the municipal court. Sometime in the 1890s, He began writing for the Exeter News-Letter. His weekly stories based on recollections from boyhood were popular, however, it was not until the publication of 'The Real Diary of a Real Boy' (1902) that Shute acquired national recognition. He went on to write nineteen other books and published extensively in the Saturday Evening Post (1925-1928). Called the "Mark Twain of New England," Shute's humorous, innocent, and 'jolly' stories continue to provide valuable insight into the customs of his time and place. Tasha Tudor later (1968) illustrated this charming New England Tale. HUMOR 8

The original paper boards binding has perished and should be sometimereplaced. John Horne (1736-1812), later known as John Horne Tooke began his celebrity when he became an enthusiastic partisan of Wilkes in 1768. They made a good pair. Horne loved battles of wits and legal maneuvering, and he sympathized with every cause for liberty, including the French Revolution, and the independence of the American Colonies. Wilkes and Horne later came to bitter disagreement and fought a war of 'Letters'. The redoubtable Junius entered the controversy on Wilkes's side. Horne retorted vigorously, and proved the most successful critic of that famous agitator. A friend of Horne's, William Tooke, lived in the charming town of Purley, and it was he who persuaded John Horne, by then a famous political agitator, to add the name of Tooke to his (as a mutual honor after Horne had successfully fought an Enclosure Act which would have adversely affected Tooke's Purley property). After John Horne Tooke wrote 'The Diversions of Purley' it was apparent that he wanted to be heir to at least half of his Tooke's fortune; but thiswas not to be. This edition of discursive and eccentric linguistic essays, edited and printed by Richard Taylor (1781-1858), is considered the best version of 'The Diversions of Purley'. W151 R

1866351 p. Small 8vo. Pages browned. Contemporary half leather binding. Early ownerships of John E. Miller and Nellie Bradford. "No book published within the memory of man, in the English or any other language, has effected so great a revolution in the previously received opinions of society. The influence of that unpretending treatise has extended to hundreds of thousands of minds which know not whe nce they derived the new light that has broken in upon them, and percolated into thousands of circles that are scarcely conscious of knowing more about Mr. Combe than his name, and the fact that he wa s a phrenologist. the appearance of which created a sensation unparalleled by any philosophical work ever published in the language" - Illustrated London News, 1858. The book's fame did carry a word for phrenology with it; but Constitution is not a book about phrenology, instead it is a book of natural philosophy which teaches that Man is as subject to natural laws as the rest of Nature- Physical , Organic, and Moral. Ignorance of or disobedience to the natural laws led to 'punishment' - such as catching a cold from exposure to the elements. The first steps towards the good life were to study and obey the distinct natural laws (notably excluding the Bible). Combe's book was hugely controversial from the 1820s through the 1850s. Evangelicals founded societies to oppose it, wrote books and a rticles against it, and sometimes even burned it! The fuss popularly believed to have resulted from Darwin's Origin of Species pales in comparison to that of Combe's Constitution, one of the most infl uential books of the 19th century. The 8th was the final edition revised by Combe. This is the first Henderson Edition. NW45 Rt.Stk
