This, Moore's second novel, after the huge success of Zeluco in 1789, was less successful with the public. He was a distinguished travel writer, noted for his portrayals of post Revolutionary France. At one time he was a close friend and confidant of Robert Burns, but Moore's hostility to the French Revolution cooled the relationship. To Which Is Added, An Account Of The Author's Life And A Copious Index." Written as an answer to Sir Robert Filmer's 'Patriarcha' this is one of the earliest modern statements of republican ideals. Sidney proposes a doctrine of natural justice and governmental order from which all institutions vary at their peril. He asserted that a king's authority is granted by parliament, which has the additional power to depose him - a very controversial idea during the Restoration period. Many of the founders were influenced by the text. Thomas Jefferson described it as ".probably the best elementary book of the principles of government, as founded in natural right which has ever been published in any language; and it is much to be desired in such a government as ours that it should be put into the hands of our youth as soon as their minds are sufficiently matured for that branch of study."
