Scarce reprint of the rare original 1700's edition. Interesting poems describing public houses (Pubs) in London and Westminister during the 1700's. Describes the kinds of beers they served and the sorts of people that frequented them. Wood cut images accompany each verse. Ward (1667-1731), was a humourist, of `low extraction' and with little education. In early life he visited the West Indies, and afterwards he began business as a publican in Moorfields. By 1699 he had moved to Fulwood's Rents, where he kept a punch-shop and tavern (probably the King's Head), next door to Gray's Inn, until his death. Giles Jacob (Poetical Register, 1723) says: `Of late years he has kept a public-house in the city (but in a genteel way), and with his wit, humour, and good liquor, has afforded his guests a pleasurable entertainment; especially the high-church party. A man of considerable natural parts and with a gift of humour, `Ned Ward,' as he is frequently called, imitated Butler's `Hudibras' both in his style and in his attacks on the Whigs and low-church party. Though vulgar and often grossly coarse, his writings throw considerable light on the social life of the time of Queen Anne, and especially on the habits of various classes in London; but much allowance has to be made for exaggeration" - DNB. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! 1768pp. xv, 134, [ii] + Two nice engraved plates. 4to. Worn contemporary full leather binding; boards detached. Should be rebacked. With the engraved armorial bookplate Sir Edmund Antrobus, an uncle of Walpole's friend, the poet Thomas Gray (1716-1771). Antrobus is famous as the owner of Stonehenge. Walpole's splendidly written and much celebrated defence of King Richard, influenced most later historians and commentators. Though Walpole was no great historian, he nevertheless well understood that all `history is written by the victors' and records from the past should be reviewed with some scepticism. This is one of the earliest attempts to rehabilitate a character previously stamped with infamy. These doubts provoked several answers, which are criticized in a supplement edited by Dr E. C. Hawtrey for the Philobiblon Society (1854). First Edition. SCARCE. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W151.

1864pp. xii, 452. Small 8vo. Modern library binding. XLib. Manuscript ownership of (Captain:) H. Evans, Ship Light Brigade, 1871. The Ship Light Brigade was famous for it's sailings to India, Australia, and New Zealand. "In addition to the great beauty of her model and rig, the Light Brigade was interesting from the fact that she brought out a large number of troops during the Maori War. Of 1214 tons burden, she was built in 1855 at Boston, USA by that celebrated builder Donald McKay and when she left the launching ways her name was Ocean Telegraph." Competition Wallah: A hybrid of English and Hindustani, applied in modern Anglo-Indian colloquial to members of the Civil Service who have entered it by the competitive system first introduced in 1856. The phrase was probably the invention of one of the older or Haileybury members of the same service. These latter, whose nominations were due to interest, and who were bound together by the intimacies and esprit de corps of a common college, looked with some disfavor upon the children of Innovation. The name was readily taken up in India, but its familiarity in England is probably due in great part to the "Letters of a Competition-Wallah", written by Sir G.O. Trevelyan. First Edition in book form. Scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W140 RtStk

"'Vindiciae Gallicae' was published in April 1791 in answer to Burke's 'Reflections' Three editions were speedily sold, and the publisher liberally gave Mackintosh 'several times' the sum of L30, originally stipulated. Burke had been answered with much power by Thomas Paine. Mackintosh's reply, however, taking a less radical ground, and showing much literary and philosophical culture, was the most effective defense of the position of the Whig sympathizers with the revolution. It was partly translated into French by the Duke of Orleans". [DNB]. ** PRICE JUST REDUCED!! FRENG 2

Henry Taylor (1711-1785) was "among the last of the divines of the Clarkean school; but he outran his master, openly espousing the Apollinarian heresy, this he did in (this) series of letters. [The work] abounds in learning and in argument, but is very discursive. The seventh letter, On Miracles, was separately reprinted by his son William" - DNB. It is this discursive quality that most attracts our attention today. Roth, Magna Anglo-Judaica, 287: 70. ESTC T101250-2. Quite scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W144
