Published in 1739 by Company of Stationers in London. 96 pages. A-D12. About the Main Publisher & Work John Baskett 1664/5-1742 was the King's Printer for England. His sons Thomas and Robert and grandson by the latter Mark were also engaged in the press. By purchasing reversion of the King's Printer position Baskett kept it in the family for the following generation holding a monopoly on English Bible publication for 90 years until 1799. Baskett is particularly renowned for his imperial folio pulpit Bible of 1717-1716 nicknamed the Vinegar Bible. The bible listed is a pocket-sized format finely bound with exquisite craftsmanship using the finest materials. The bible along with its accompanying books of prayers and psalms was intended to be used for daily prayer meditation reading and reflection. CONDITION REPORT The book is in Very Good antiquarian condition. Exterior and binding: Tight hinges split and tender joints causing the boards to be a bit loose but holding. Burgundy-colored morocco is lovely and colorful. The gilt work is almost completely intact and still lustrous including the spine. Spine a tad darkened dry and cracking but not faded with the gilt work still shining. Rubbed spine and extremities. Spine tips leather rubbed away along with the headband. Corners slightly bumped and worn. Page edge gilt still glossy with some areas of rubbing/dulling. Interior: Pages are generally clean and lightly toned overall with an occasional darker toned/browning page. Light sporadic foxing overall heavier on the blanks. Original marbled endpapers faded per usual. Several former owner inscriptions on front and rear blanks including Ann Gibbs with her name in a beautiful artistic cursive dated March 4 1748 on the front blank. Robert Stoughton signs his name on the FFEP recto along with a lovely poetic inscription: 'Robert Stoughton his book God gave him grace - therein to look not to look but understand. Learning is better than house or land.' Pages are trimmed tight and a bit miscut by the printer at times affecting the running headlines on two leaves partially cropped. A few small marginal tears. Some insect predation on several page margins leading to feathered edges affecting text with some letter loss on the fore-edges of two leaves when the book worm got ambitious with its munching. Some light signs of handling like an infrequent smudge crease or bent corner. All in all a Very Good sammelband of a pocket bible Book of Common Prayer and Whole Book of Psalms in its original and exquisite fine Georgian red morocco binding nearly three centuries old but not looking a day over 150.
