Ce nom, en Irlande, sonne comme une légende. En Europe, peu de révolutionnaires recoivent, comme lui, l'hommage quotidien de tout un peuple. Sa vie et ses oeuvres hantent les écoliers irlandais. On décerne son nom aux gares, aux hôpitaux, aux rues. On porte son portrait à la boutonnière. Derrière le vernis scintillant de la légende, l'homme de chair et de sang : le syndicaliste des taudis écossais et des faubourgs dublinois ; l'organisateur des syndicats américains et des grèves de Belfast ; le féministe et le tacticien militaire.
