Biedermann 1849-1933 with his signature in pencil to head of violin I part; small oval handstamp of G. Schirmer to all parts. With performance letters in blue pencil to parts. Score is a re-issue following Simrock's move to Berlin; parts are an earlier issue. One of the most gifted and versatile prodigies Mendelssohn stood at the forefront of German music during the 1830s and 40s as conductor pianist organist and above all composer. His musical style fully developed before he was 20 drew upon a variety of influences including the complex chromatic counterpoint of Bach the formal clarity and gracefulness of Mozart and the dramatic power of Beethoven and Weber. Mendelssohn's emergence into the first rank of 19th-century German composers coincided with efforts by music historiographers to develop the concept of a Classic-Romantic dialectic in 18th and 19th-century music. To a large degree his music reflects a fundamental tension between Classicism and Romanticism in the generation of German composers after Beethoven." R. Larry Todd in Grove Music Online Maximilian Carl Eberwein son of composer Franz Carl Eberwein was a noted pianist and pedagogue. His arrangement of the present work for full orchestra was first published in 1848. N. Simrock [PN 4717] unknown

1880réf. List38130England 1880. Carte de visite measuring 2 â… x 4 inches. With later manuscript pencil markings on the verso. A few spots on the photograph with some wear to mount. Excellent. A carte de visite portrait of activist and theosophist Annie Besant 1847-1933 taken by the German portrait photographer Hayman Seleg Mendelssohn 1847-1908. Besant was a campaigner for a number of activist causes in Britain first as a speaker and writer for the National Secular Society where she met atheist activist Charles Bradlaugh; the two were prosecuted for breaching the Obscene Publications Act when they published Charles Knowlton's The Fruits of Philosophy a pamphlet about birth control methods. Besant was active in socialist and union organizing with the Fabian Society and Social Democratic Federation. Around 1890 Besant met Helena Blavatsky and became interested in theosophy; this led her to India where she established both schools and Masonic lodges and joined the Indian National Congress. Her campaigning for Indian independence led first to her arrest and then to election as president of the INC in 1917. She continued to publish on Indian politics and theosophical topics until her death in India in 1933. unknown
