The Carters of Prussia Cove were a family of Cornish smugglers active in the late 18th century operating out of Prussia Cove Cornwall where they had a hideout/home in a remote cliff next to the ocean. John Carter born 1738 mysteriously disappeared presumed dead 1807 was nicknamed the "King of Prussia" in reference to his smuggling operations with some of his brothers among them Harry Carter 1749-1809. John obtained the nickname because he was said to closely resemble Frederick the Great the King of Prussia and was said to much admire him and gave his name to the cove located east of Penzance. The BBC said of the brothers "The Carters of Prussia Cove are among the most famous of all the Cornish smugglers." By all accounts despite his profession John Carter was a devout Methodist and was noted for his honest dealing as a smuggler. Much of what is known about John and the Carters came from Harry's autobiography "The Autobiography of a Cornish Smuggler" and folklore passed down through the generations. A remarkably rare survival of the first edition in English of Lettre sur l’education 1760 the declaration of Frederick II King of Prussia 1712-1785 announcing his desires regarding educational reform. Soon after the original Continental publication Frederick laid the basic foundations of what would eventually become the Prussian primary education system issuing in 1763 a decree for the first Prussian general school law based on the principles developed by Johann Julius Hecker. A true progressive in matters of learning he championed the acquisition of knowledge for the sake of knowledge and believed that women ought to be provided with the same opportunities of their male counterparts as the were no less capable: 'leur intelligence ne le cède point à celle de l'homme et même qu'avec une éducation plus mâle elles l'emporteraient sur nous'. 'Their intelligence does not yield to that of man and even that with a more masculine education they would prevail over us'. ESTC records a single copy Miami. ESTC N33830. réf. 44912The grandson of King Frederick William III of Prussia was himself a military officer who rose through the ranks to field marshal serving notably in the Second Schleswig War of 1864 the Austro-Prussian War and the Franco-Prussian War. DS in German 1p 8½" X 14" Berlin Germany 29 June 1863. Very good. Faintly age toned and with original folds evident; a tad delicate about the edges with several small expert archival edge mends on verso; triangular chip at lower left corner. On printed upper left letterhead of the Third Army Corps "III. Armee-Corps General Commando" the then lieutenant-general informs the Royal Headquarters of a soldier's transfer. Roughly translated in part: "I respectfully reply that the young Hoffman in the noncommissioned officers school in Potsdam is to be assigned to the Brandenburg Rifle Regiment no. 35 and I have provided the said regiment with the proper notice." Boldly penned in brown ink with Friedrich Karl's huge signature at the close. The verso contains two holograph columns of six dockets or endorsements of some sort whose purpose is not clear. One of these is signed by noted Prussian infantry general Georg Ferdinand von Bentheim 1807-84 and another by noted Prussian infantry general Wolf Louis Anton Ferdinand Stulpnagel 1813-85. The remaining four are signed by three different persons likely also infantry generals although we have been unable to identify them. Fascinating item. unknown
