2017New English Original bdg. HC. Oblong 4to. (29 x 29 cm). In English and Turkish. 171 p., color ills. Life story of the silk worm.= Ipek böceginin yasam öyküsü. The story of the silkworm was told in the book from the silkworm egg to the silk. Narrators (silkworm, mulberry leaf and author) told the story from their own perspectives. The silkworm ate lots of mulberry leaves during the caterpillar stage since continuing its bloodline was its fundamental goal. It underwent the necessary transformations inside the silk walled house it weaved. It was reborn as a moth and came out of its cocoon. It coupled and left the eggs that will continue its bloodline. Thus, it experienced the joy of fulfilling its task before passing away. This natural cycle of life does not always continue in this manner. The goal of mankind to obtain the silk on the walls of the cocoon continuously disrupts the reproduction instinct of the silkworm. The silkworm tells the change in its life as such: "From that point onwards, I am just a string of silk. I am now a part of the lives of humans with my silk. I become the clothes on people's bodies or a carpet on which children play. I live with people, move with people, breathe with people. I am also udes as a building material of many artworks. I pay the price fort he silk I produce with my life. However, I start living among the people with their own energies. The 'silk' in my name 'silkworm' keeps on living. Thus, I am immortalized in the art of living with my silk. This consoles and immortalizes me.".

1915Fine German Original typescript letter signed 'Souchon', addressed to Capitan, lieutenant colonel Vasif (Wassif) Muhiddin Bey [Kasimpasali]. Wassif Bey was a ship commander of Hamidiye cruiser before Rauf Orbay. 27x21 cm. In German. 1 p. "Kommando der Flotte" letterhead with bilingual in German and Ottoman Turkish. 8 lines. Signed 'Souchon'. This letter includes an indication that it honors the Kaiser (Wilhelm II) with the Iron Cross medal for Commander of Haamidiye, Wassif Bey. "Seine Majestät der Kaiser und König haben Euer Hochwohlgeboren in Anbetracht Ihrer tatkraftigen Arbeit im Interesse der Kriegsbereitschaft und Kriegsbereitschaft und Kriegsbedürfnisse der Marine das Eiserne Kreuz 2. Klasse zu verleihen geruht.". [i.e. His Majesty the Emperor and King have deigned your High Wellbeing to give the Iron Cross 2nd Class to the Navy in view of your hard work in the interest of readiness for war needs.]. Wilhelm Anton Souchon was a German admiral in World War I. Souchon commanded the Kaiserliche Marine's Mediterranean squadron in the early days of the war. His initiative played a major part in the entry of the Ottoman Empire into World War I. Wilhelm Anton Souchon was born on 2 June 1864 in Germany to a family of Huguenot ancestry. In July 1914, hostilities erupted between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Serbia. Rear Admiral Souchon, a native of Leipzig, feared being trapped in the Adriatic Sea in the event of other nations joining in the conflict. Because of this, Souchon took his two ships, the battlecruiser Goeben and the light cruiser Breslau, into the western Mediterranean. When World War I began on 4 August 1914, he bombarded the French-Algerian ports of Bône and Philippeville. He successfully eluded British attempts to corner him (see Pursuit of Goeben and Breslau) and on 10 August 1914, his small squadron arrived at the Dardanelles. After two days of negotiations, he was allowed to take his ships to Istanbul where they were subsequently transferred officially into the Ottoman Navy. Souchon was appointed Commander-in-chief of the Ottoman Navy and served in this position until September 1917. This gesture by Germany had an enormously positive impact with the Turkish population. At the outbreak of the war, Winston Churchill caused outrage when he "requisitioned" without compensation two almost completed Turkish battleships in British shipyards, Sultan Osman I and Reshadieh, that had been financed by public subscription. These ships were commissioned into the Royal Navy as Agincourt and Erin, respectively. On 15 August 1914, in the aftermath of Souchon's daring dash to Constantinople, Turkey cancelled their maritime agreement with Britain and the Royal Navy mission under Admiral Limpus, and left by 15 September. The Dardanelles were fortified with German assistance and the Bosporus was secured by the presence of Goeben (now Yavuz Sultan Selim). On 27 September 1914, the Straits were officially closed to all international shipping. On 29 October 1914, Souchon's fleet launched the Black Sea Raid, a naval attack which brought the Ottoman Empire into World War I. His ships laid several sea minefields and shelled the Russian Black Sea ports of Sevastopol, Odessa, and others, destroying the Russian minesweeper, Prut, in the process. British naval units quickly retaliated on Turkish merchant ships off Izmir (Smyrna). On 2 November 1914, Russia declared war on the Ottoman Empire. On 5 November, Britain followed suit and on 12 November 1914, the Ottoman government officially declared war on the Triple Entente. For the next three years, Souchon attempted to reform the Ottoman Navy while conducting a number of raids on Russian shipping, ports, and coastal installations in the Black Sea. Promoted to vice admiral, Souchon was awarded the Pour le Mérite, Germany's highest military order, on 29 October 1916. In September 1917, Souchon returned to Germany. There he received command of the Fourth Battleship Squadron of the High Seas F

1879Very Good German Original sepia-toned cabinet photograph taken by German photographer J. C. Schaarwachter (1847-1904). 17x11 cm. Moltke was a Prussian field marshal. The chief of staff of the Prussian Army for thirty years, he is regarded as the creator of a new, more modern method of directing armies in the field. He commanded troops in Europe and the Middle East, commanding during the Second Schleswig War, Austro-Prussian War, and the Franco-Prussian War. He is described as embodying "Prussian military organization and tactical genius.". He was fascinated with railways and pioneered their military usage. He is often referred to as Moltke the Elder to distinguish him from his nephew Helmuth Johann Ludwig von Moltke, who commanded the German Army at the outbreak of World War I. In 1835 on his promotion as captain, Moltke obtained six months leave to travel in south-eastern Europe. After a short stay in Constantinople he was requested by the Sultan Mahmud II to help modernize the Ottoman Empire army, and being duly authorized from Berlin he accepted the offer. He remained two years at Constantinople, learned Turkish, and surveyed the city of Constantinople, the Bosphorus, and the Dardanelles. He traveled through Wallachia, Bulgaria, and Rumelia, and made many other journeys on both sides of the Strait. In 1838 Moltke was sent as an adviser to the Ottoman general commanding the troops in Anatolia, who was to carry on a campaign against Muhammad Ali of Egypt. During the summer Moltke made extensive reconnaissances and surveys, riding several thousand miles in the course of his journey. He navigated the rapids of the Euphrates and visited and mapped many parts of the Ottoman Empire. In 1839 the army moved south to fight the Egyptians, but upon the approach of the enemy, the general refused to listen to Moltke's advice. Moltke resigned from his post of staff officer and took charge of the artillery. In the Battle of Nezib (modern-day Nisibis) on 24 June 1839, the Ottoman army was beaten. With great difficulty, Moltke made his way back to the Black Sea, and thence to Constantinople. His patron, Sultan Mahmud II, was dead, so he returned to Berlin where he arrived, broken in health, in December 1839. Once home Moltke published some of the letters he had written as Letters on Conditions and Events in Turkey in the Years 1835 to 1839. This book was well-received at the time. Early the next year he married a young English woman, Maria Bertha Helena Burt, the daughter of John Heyliger Burt Esq. of St. Croix in the Danish West Indies, who married his sister Augusta. It was a happy union, though there were no children.

2018New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 172 p. New building typologies of the Prussian and Ottoman Empires. Mass housing and shopping. Bilateral relations between the Prussian Empire and the Ottoman Empire reached their peak during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II in the 19th century, when the Industrial Revolution was taking place. This was a period of great change in living conditions and social culture as well. Necessities for housing changed as well, and the "birth" of a new housing type; the apartment blocks with shops and passages beneath - took place, especially in European capitals. This research focuses on this point of history, and aims to illuminate the relations between the Ottoman Empire and Prussian Empire in an architectural context; and also to show the shaping of urban life in 19th century Istanbul. The main focus of this work, however, is the relation between socio-cultural issues and architecture in the Prussian and Ottoman Empires, from the perspective of urban planning and apartment building construction in two capitals, Berlin and Istanbul, in the same period of time in the 19th century. When public issues meet daily social housing problems, the 19th century apartment blocks with passages beneath emerge as a new type of building, based on examples from Istanbul and Berlin alike.
