This work by Frederick II the King of Prussia also known as Frederick the Great presents his political philosophy including thoughts on morality social structure and individuals/citizens and their role in the health of nations. It is perhaps most important for the response it elicited from Voltaire who wrote a satirical letter in response in which he ironically praised the ruler for his ability to simultaneously applaud the humble virtues of the everyman represented here as a cobbler while sending many such men to their deaths in military campaigns specifically the Seven Years War. While Voltaire mocked this particular effort the two corresponded regularly and Voltaire even called Frederick a 'philosopher king.' Frederick published other political works as well including a rebuttal to Machiavelli's The Prince. Pierre Mortier hardcover

Edition originale de cette suite de 31 planches de caricatures prenant pour décor le siège de Paris en 1870 : la plupart sur les questions d’alimentation, de consommation des animaux domestiques, les menus, etc., mais aussi éclairage, chauffage, réquisition, réfugiés, finance, bombardements, etc. De son vrai nom Jules Jean Georges Renard, Draner, né à Liège et installé à Paris en 1861, il devint le spécialiste de la caricature de la vie militaire et réalisa des costumes pour plusieurs théâtres parisiens, notamment pour la plupart des oeuvres de Jacques Offenbach. Il collabora avec de nombreux journaux illustrés parisiens : Charivari, L'Eclipse, Le Monde Classique, Paris-Comique, L'Illustration, Le Monde Illustré, Le journal amusant... Quelques accrocs de papier sans perte. Bon exemplaire.

Seconde édition française "augmentée de près du double", publiée et compilée par Édouard de La Grange sur la base de la plus grande partie des oeuvres de Jean-Paul. Contient une bibliographie. "Les pensées vives et caustiques de l'un des plus grands écrivains allemands du XIXe siècle mais qui restent d'une étonnante actualité.
